Club World Cup: Manchester City crash out in stunning fashion

Saudi Arabian side Al Hilal sent English giants Manchester City crashing out of the Club World Cup on Monday, snatching a shock 4-3 victory in extra time in the biggest upset of the tournament so far.
The match finished 2-2 at full-time but at the end of an eventful extra-time Marcos Leonardo grabbed the winner and pulled off one of the greatest wins in Middle Eastern football history.
The Saudi club advance to the quarter-finals where they will face Brazilian club Fluminense, ensuring a non-European team will reach the last four.
Manchester City had taken the lead in the ninth minute in controversial fashion, Bernardo Silva finishing after Rayan Ait-Nouri's cross.
Al Hilal players protested Ait-Nouri had controlled with his arm in the build-up but the goal stood.
Manchester City had plenty of opportunities to extend their lead before the break but a combination of poor finishing and inspired goalkeeping from Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou kept the lead at a single goal.
Al Hilal offered several reminders of their threat on the break, but Manchester City even more chances with Jeremy Doku volleying straight at Bounou who moments later reacted superbly again to keep out a Bernardo effort.
The question as to whether Manchester City would live to regret not converting those chances was answered within a minute of the resumption.
Former Manchester City full-back Joao Cancelo's low cross was parried out by Ederson, Malcolm pounced but saw his shot blocked by Ruben Dias only for the ball to loop to Marcos Leonardo to head home the equaliser.
Six minutes later and the Manchester City's high defensive line was exposed by a long ball from Cancelo which Brazilian Malcolm raced on to and he showed power and pace as he broke away before coolly slotting past Ederson.
The Saudi fans in the crowd went wild while Pep Guardiola responded immediately with a triple substitution with midfielder Rodri and defenders Nathan Ake and Manuel Akanji introduced.
That brought some much needed stability to a shaky back line, but Manchester City needed improvement at the other end too and it came, albeit in it scruffy circumstances.
The Al Hilal defence were unable to deal with a Bernardo corner and Erling Haaland pounced to steer home the lose ball and make it 2-2.
Manchester City piled on the pressure as they looked for the winner but yet again Bounou proved their nemesis as he denied Akanji and Ruben Dias and even when he was beaten by Haaland, substitute Ali Lajami produced a magnificent goal-line clearance.
Guardiola took off Haaland and introduced Egyptian forward Omar Marmoush as the game went into extra-time.
But for all Manchester City's depth, Al Hilal had a deep well of spirit to draw upon and just four minutes into the opening period Al Hilal regained the lead when Kalidou Koulibaly rose superbly to meet a Ruben Neves corner with a brilliantly angled header.
Manchester City responded with a goal of real quality when Rayan Cherki's brilliantly floated ball towards the back post was poked home masterfully by Phil Foden, at full stretch and from the tightest of angles.
But incredibly Al Hilal responded again to restore their lead – Sergej Milinkovic-Savic's header was saved by Ederson but Marcos Leonardo followed in to bundle the ball over the line.
As the celebrating Al Hilal fans poured out of the stadium, the Brazilian striker let his emotions pour out.
'I've had a difficult time in the last two months. My mother spent 70 days in the ICU,' he said.
'Today she's fine, thank God. When I scored those two goals, I thought of her. She was able to watch the match'.
Manchester City skipper Bernardo Silva said his team had paid the price for being unable to deal with Al Hilal's counter-attacking.
'We scored three and could've scored five, six. It was all about controlling when we lost the ball, controlling the transitions, don't let them run, and they ran way too many times,' he said.
'With one, two passes there was always a feeling of danger coming from them. When we allow teams to run like this we always suffer a lot, and today was the case,' he said.

Liverpool FC's strategic absence from the FIFA Club World Cup sets the stage for Arne Slot's second season

Arne Slot, Liverpool FC Manager, prepares for the upcoming season after winning the Premier League Title in his first season. Image: AFP As the footballing world currently watches the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States, Liverpool FC, one of Europe's most decorated clubs, finds its absence from this year's competition beneficial as they prepare for the upcoming 2025/2026 Premier League season. Having clinched the Premier League title in April, Arne Slot's debut season, and with the lure of a new trophy in the cabinet, the club saw an increase in funding from the significant prize money that came with winning the Premier League, reportedly up to £181.5 million (around R2,784,000,000) according to Premier League representatives and NBC Sports. The primary reason for Liverpool's absence from the newly expanded 32-team Club World Cup, as reported by This Is Anfield, was FIFA's rule limiting participation to two clubs per country. While not by choice because of FIFA's qualification criteria for the Club World Cup, this period allows for a well-deserved break for the Premier League Champions before the 25/26 season begins. Speaking to Sky Sports, former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp expressed his concerns about the Club World Cup being one of "the worst idea ever implemented in football" because of its increased strain on the players after their respective seasons. Already, players had mentioned how the temperature in the United States had taken a significant toll on their performance throughout the competition, with the intense heat and humidity proving a challenging factor. Although Klopp has left the club, his concerns about player welfare still resonated deeply within the sport, highlighting the current debate around the demanding schedule placed on elite football players. Arne Slot himself, speaking earlier in June, highlighted the potential for burnout in having to compete for another month after the official league had concluded. Slot contests this as he doesn't think it is "healthy for players to have maybe only one week off," reported. Liverpool, with a well-deserved break, can now focus on having a more comprehensive pre-season, ensuring Slot's squad is physically and mentally refreshed for what promises to be another demanding campaign. Instead of battling it out in the Club World Cup, Liverpool's pre-season schedule takes them to Asia with matches against AC Milan in Hong Kong and Yokohama F. Marinos in Japan, before returning to Anfield for a friendly game against Athletic City. Slot's focus for Liverpool's pre-season is on refining the squad. With the summer transfer window very much underway, Slot's team has seen some significant ins and outs, signifying a clear strategic direction from the new management team, Liverpool FC representatives confirmed. Meanwhile, Manchester City's pre-season and round of 16 exit in the Club World Cup draws concerns for City's manager, Pep Guardiola. Guardiola's concerns express how the demanding schedule of the Club World Cup could "destroy" City's 2025-2026 campaign. According to Sky Sports and Guardiola and other top coaches emphasize the delicate balance clubs must maintain between competition, player well-being, and future season planning. Slot's Vision: Shaping the Future With the transfer window open, Liverpool has seen significant activity, marked by both high-profile departures and strategic new signings under Slot's vision. Florian Wirtz's signing represents a clear statement of intent, signalling the club's willingness to invest heavily in elite, game-changing talent. The £116 million deal (R2,772,903,440,00) for Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen makes him the most expensive midfield player in Premier League history, according to Sky Sports and For Liverpool fans, Wirtz's arrival had already sparked enormous excitement, an excitement that dates back to 2007 when Liverpool signed Fernando Torres from Atlético Madrid. As Slot recently stated in a club interview: "Florian is a player we've admired for a long time. His ability to unlock defences and dictate play is exceptional. He will bring an additional dimension to our attack, and we are incredibly excited to see him develop further here." Florian Wirtz signs for Liverpool, making him the most expensive signing in Premier League History at a record-breaking £116m Image: AFP Last week, in a club statement released, Liverpool FC announced the signing of left-back Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth for £40 million, roughly around (R700,572,000,00). For Slot's squad, Kerkez is a more dynamic and younger talent, with rumours of Andy Robertson expected to depart from the club this coming season, according to various transfer speculation. Milos Kerkez, Liverpool's latest signing, joins from Bournemouth FC for £40m. Image: AFP The most impactful exit this season has been Trent Alexander-Arnold, who's moved to Real Madrid for £8 million (R192,202,720) as announced by Real Madrid club president Florentino Pérez. Jeremie Frimpong, also from Bayer Leverkusen, directly replaces Alexander-Arnold. AP News reported that the talented right-back's transfer to Liverpool cost £30 million (R525,412,449). In the goalkeeping department, Caoimhín Kelleher departed and joined Brentford for £18 million (around R430.7 million), as reported by Sky Sports. His replacement will be Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia for £29 million (approximately R693.9 million), Sky Sports confirmed. Hamilton fastest in first British Grand Prix practice, Norris second

Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton raised hopes of more British Grand Prix heroics with the fastest lap in first practice on Friday, while 17-year-old Arvid Lindblad looked strong in his debut session for Red Bull. Hamilton, 40, on a career low sequence of 13 races without a podium finish but a nine-time home race winner, lapped a sunny Silverstone with a best effort of 1:26.892 seconds. McLaren's Lando Norris, favourite for a first home win on Sunday, was 0.023 slower but ahead of championship-leading teammate Oscar Piastri in third and 0.150 off the pace. Piastri leads Norris by 15 points with Silverstone marking the season's midpoint. Hamilton's teammate Charles Leclerc was fourth with Mercedes George Russell fifth. It was Hamilton's first time at a grand prix on home soil in Ferrari's red colours. The team have yet to win this season, the only top four outfit yet to do so. Lindblad, replacing Yuki Tsunoda for the session only, ended up 14th fastest with a time only half a second behind that of teammate and reigning champion Max Verstappen, who was 10th. Red Bull had to seek special dispensation from the governing FIA for the Anglo-Swedish driver with Indian heritage to be allowed to drive while under the age limit of 18. Only one other driver had debuted so young at a grand prix weekend and that was Verstappen. Brazilian rookie Gabriel Bortoleto spun 360 at speed but without mishap. Estonian Paul Aron lapped for Sauber and was 17th.

PSL transfer news: Lucas Ribeiro hints Brazil move, Mofokeng exit

PSL fans still have just under two months to wait until they see their favourite players grace the pitch in a season which promises to deliver fireworks. Orlando Pirates were hot on Mamelodi Sundowns' heels last season, but tapered off towards the end. This offseason, they have already brought in 10 recruits, including established PSL stars Oswin Appollis and Tshepang Moremi. Their arrivals would make the departure of Relebohile Mofokeng a lighter pill to swallow. The 20-year-old phenom has several clubs, from FC Cincinnati to Ah Ahly, vying for his services, fuelling speculation of an offseason exit; a notion further solidified by his father, who has urged the Pirates winger to flock the PSL. 'My biggest wish is to see Rele overseas in 2025/2026. I'm praying every day. I don't want to see him in the Betway Premiership again this season. I know God will answer my prayers,' Sechaba Mofokeng said. '[Whether it's in] Spain, England, Netherlands, France, Denmark, Switzerland — Rele can play. I believe that with all my heart. Take him to Barcelona? He can play. PSG? He can play. Any country. I'll be happy — but not Saudi Arabia,' he added. Mamelodi Sundowns celebrate a result. Photo: @MamelodiSundowns/OfficialPSL/Twitter Meanwhile, Lucas Ribeiro Costa would have had some nostalgia playing Brazil's Fluminense in the Club World Cup; but its Palmeiras who has is heart. Could a PSL exit be looming for the league's top goalscorer? 'You know that we, players, support the team we play for, but I have always supported Palmeiras,' said Ribeiro Costa. 'I've always been a big fan because of my father. He loves Palmeiras a lot and has always made me follow him since I was little. But we, professional players, have always loved the club we are playing for, too.' Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1.
