Pádraig Harrington claims the US Senior Open for a second time
Pádraig Harrington has won a second US Senior Open following a one-shot victory over Stewart Cink at the Broadmoor Golf Club.
Holding a share of the lead with American Cink and Australia's Mark Hensby overnight, Harrington's three-under 70 saw him finish at 11 under overall and that was enough to edge Cink.
Spain's Miguel Angel Jimenez at nine under was a shot further back in third.
The Dubliner, whose previous success in this major was in 2022, has now won ten times on the Champions Tour.

He captioned it: "A celebratory ice pop for Rio. Peanut butter and banana." Fans of the two-time British Open winner congratulated him whilst also looking forward to next month's edition which will be held at Royal Portrush in Antrim. Stephen hailed: "Congrats Padraig, great champion of the game. Hopefully keep playing great for Portrush too!" Lastly, while thinking of Padraig's other dog, Ron joked: "Hopefully you made things right with Maltbie." In winning the tournament, Harrington earned a payday of $800,000. He had been tied heading into the last round after a 68 on Saturday - the same as Australia's Mark Hensby and American Cink. It was the 2024 Golf Hall of Fame inductee's tenth Senior's Tour title. Afterwards an elated Harrington "Look, here I'm not thinking I'm going to miss the cut. Touch wood that doesn't happen. "I'm not thinking about that. If you brought me to a regular event Thursday afternoon I would be thinking about the cut line. "Whereas here I'm thinking how do I get myself into position. And even the first couple of days I got going and I could have got away from the field. "I dropped back a couple (shots). I was still going. All I want to be is with nine holes to go to give myself a chance and be in the right head space at that time." MIGUEL'S MISHAP Third-placed Jimenez rued his approach on the 18th as he ultimately ran out of holes to reel in Harrington's lead. Reflecting on his costly bogey, he vented: "If I had a chance to get on the green, I would go for that. "But as I was talking with my caddie, 'OK, maybe you can pass the water, but we cannot do anything from there. Is it worth the risk?' "Then I still need to go, but he's right. Then make not a bad wedge where I hit it after. "I went high left, more or less, pin high and missed it, but at least give myself a chance to make 4. But if I put it in the water, bye-bye."

Hannah Hidalgo has night to forget as Olivia Miles reminds Notre Dame what it's lost
Notre Dame star Hannah Hidalgo had a rough night while former Fighting Irish star Olivia Miles shined as Team USA made it two wins from two games at the FIBA Women's AmeriCup on Sunday. The U.S. cruised to an 80-43 victory over Colombia in Chile, strengthening their position atop Group B after a blowout victory over the tournament hosts on Saturday. The youthful American team, comprised of college talents, has proved a class above much more experienced opposition so far, with group games against Puerto Rico and Mexico still to come. However, it was a rough night for Notre Dame point guard Hidalgo individually. The junior put up just two points, one rebound and four assists in 16 minutes, going 1 of 10 from the floor. It followed a 14-point performance against Chile in the tournament opener. The senior was much more efficient in her 20 minutes on the court, finishing with 11 points, eight rebounds, and eight assists, going 4 of 7 from the floor en route to a commanding victory in Santiago. Mikayla Blakes led the U.S. in scoring with 15 points, while Joyce Edwards impressed from the bench with 13 points and nine rebounds. The minutes were shared across the rotation with the Americans in complete command for the vast majority of the game, and Miles said there was plenty to like about the performance. Miles and Hidalgo were teammates at Notre Dame 'We're sharing the ball really well,' she said. 'A great asset of our team is we have great bigs who run the floor, so that was really impressive tonight.' 'We played really well, very cohesively. We're getting chemistry each game. Just really excited to be out here with these girls, you can't take a minute for granted, as coach was telling us in the game.' Team USA head coach Kara Lawson was particularly impressed by her team's play in the first quarter, producing a 12-0 run at the end of the period to lead 25-10 and set the wheels in motion for a comfortable victory. 'I thought the first quarter was our best quarter,' she said. 'I thought we started with great purpose and great intensity. You know, that group got us off to a really good start on both ends.' Team USA returns to action on Monday against Puerto Rico, which edged past Colombia 68-65 in its only game of the tournament so far. The Americans' final group game follows on Wednesday against Mexico, who beat Chile 76-59 to make a winning start to the championship. In Group A, Canada leads the way with two wins from two games. Both Brazil and the Dominican Republic have won their only games so far. The top four teams from each group qualify for the quarterfinals, which begin on Friday.

Padraig Harrington's telling response after Rory McIlroy 'terribly wrong' stance
Padraig Harrington has delivered a glowing verdict of the Champions Tour after winning his second US Senior Open title. Harrington won the tournament by one stroke on Sunday, narrowly finishing ahead of Stewart Cink at the top of the leaderboard. The three-time major winner carded three-under-par in his final round to finish on 11-under. A run of seven consecutive pars was enough for Harrington to see off Cink's challenge and claim the €682k ($800k) top prize, having triumphed at the same event in 2022. Rory McIlroy has previously dismissed the idea of joining the Champions Tour in the future. However, despite his brief run-in with a commentator at Broadmoor, Harrington admitted to loving his time at the prestigious over-50s events, which do not exist in most other sports. 'It's unbelievable. We're so much better together at this stage of our careers,' Harrington explained after his victory. 'Everybody is happier and friendlier. 'We're not half as grumpy as we were when we were young guys. I think, as you get older, you realise that you don't actually have all the secrets and that you can actually tell everybody everything, and it's up to them to figure it out too. 'We're much more relaxed than -- we're still competitive when we're on the golf course. We want to play great golf, but I think the environment around the Champions Tour is really nice.' McIlroy does not share Harrington's enthusiasm for over-50s golf. In March, he was asked about possibly joining the Champions Tour when he finally meets the age criteria. 'Absolutely not,' McIlroy declared ahead of his victory at the Players Championship. 'I will not play Champions Tour golf. Look, I've said a lot of absolutes in my time that I've walked back, but I do not envision playing Champions Tour golf. Something has went terribly wrong if I have to compete at golf at 50.' However, McIlroy, who achieved a career Grand Slam by winning the Masters in April, explained the nuances behind his stance. He highlighted the longevity of his professional career as one reason behind his lack of interest in the Champions Tour. 'I look at other sports, I turned pro in 2007. I'm 18 years into a career. Not a lot of athletes can say they've had an 18-year career, and I'm only 35,' he explained. 'I can acknowledge how lucky golfers are to be able to do what they do for so long compared to other athletes, so whenever I feel like the time is right, I'll have no problem moving aside and letting the next generation do their thing.' Meanwhile, Harrington, who also finished T2 at the Senior PGA Championship last month, relishes his time on the tour. The 53-year-old believes the Champions Tour has given him a fresh perspective on the sport. 'Most of us would have burnt out in golf,' Harrington said. 'You put so much into your golfing career, you burn out. Usually you last about 20 years is the burn-out period, 15 to 20 years. The Champions Tour is a new lease on life. 'The only way you can kind of do it is do it with a different attitude and a new attitude. As I said, it's about, I suppose, enjoying your past glories now and reliving them.'
