On June 30, the Royal Household released the Sovereign Grant Report 2024-2025 and, in a key detail, revealed that the Royal Train will be decommissioned.
The Sovereign Grant funds the royal family's official duties and maintenance of the occupied palaces, and its annual financial statement is full of details about how the royal family spends that money. A summary of the report stated that the Royal Train will be retired before its current contract expires in March 2027, "following a thorough review into its use and value for money."
The Royal Train has been called "a palace on wheels" and hasn't been used much during King Charles' reign. In June 2018, Meghan Markle and Queen Elizabeth memorably rode the Royal Train to Cheshire for their first joint outing after the Duchess of Sussex married Prince Harry and embraced a full-time working royal role.
The Royal Train was a favored travel option for Queen Elizabeth and other senior royals because it allowed them to relax and work en route.
The royal transport featured nine burgundy carriages and was complete with an office, sleeping quarters and dining areas, creating a home away from home for royals on the go.
In March, The Telegraph reported that the fate of the Royal Train was up in the air amid an ongoing review following Queen Elizabeth's death in September 2022, which sparked King Charles' accession to the throne.
The outlet said that the locomotive operated by DB Cargo UK was "phenomenally costly to run," citing an example of how a two-day trip the King took to North Yorkshire in June 2023 cost $71,340.
The King reportedly used the Royal Train to travel to the Midlands in March, taking it out for the first time since May 2024.
Though the train runs on seriously sustainable hydro-treated vegetable oil, the outlet reported that the environmentally minded monarch used it just twice in 2023.
The Royal Household's decision to retire the transport hints that the King is less sentimental about the Royal Train than his late mother, who The Telegraph said saved it from being scrapped in 2017.
Heir to the throne Prince William has also taken public trains to travel to his engagements, recently surprising commuters in Wales with his wife, Kate Middleton, over the winter.
The Sovereign Grant report summary, covering April 2024 to March 2025, also included several key updates — among them, the note that both King Charles and Princess Kate began phased returns to public duties during this period following their cancer diagnoses.
Also included in the report were major updates on royal spending, engagements, and infrastructure.
The total Sovereign Grant remained unchanged for the fourth consecutive year at $108.8 million, split between $65.3 million for core funding and $43.5 million for the ongoing Buckingham Palace refurbishment project. Supplementary income rose to $27.1 million, thanks in part to record visitor numbers at Buckingham Palace during the Summer Opening and exclusive tours of the newly refurbished East Wing, which drew over 10,700 guests.
The royal family collectively undertook more than 1,900 public engagements in the U.K. and abroad, while over 93,000 people attended 828 official events across royal residences.

Work on Buckingham Palace continued at pace, with nearly 9 miles of new electrical cabling and more than 12 miles of mechanical pipework installed, along with accessibility upgrades including lifts and new lavatories.
Reflecting on the year, Keeper of the Privy Purse James Chalmers, said: 'Soft power is hard to measure but its value is, I believe, now firmly understood at home and abroad, as the core themes of the new reign have come into even sharper focus, and the Royal Family have continued in their service to the nation, Realms and Commonwealth.'

The government has promised to eliminate mobile phone signal blackspots on Britain's busiest rail routes as part of a major new infrastructure project. Dubbed 'Project Reach', ministers hope the package of improvements could be worth about £300m to travellers and taxpayers. The upgrades include tackling signal blackspots in tunnels; laying fibre optic cables along existing tracks; and installing new masts and antennas at some major stations. It is hoped these will improve the quality of internet access for commuters. The project is the government's latest initiative to improve network coverage on the UK's rail network after the National Infrastructure Strategy raised the prospect of enabling satellite connectivity on rail services. Here, Yahoo News UK breaks down where the money is expected to be spent and what impact it could have. The bulk of the work to improve access in tunnels, which Freshwave, an infrastructure firm, will carry out, is expected to focus on some of the UK's biggest rail routes, including the West Coast Main Line, the Great Western Main Line and the Chiltern Main Line. The greatest concentration of 'not spots' has been identified along the Chiltern Main Line, between London and Birmingham, and the West Coast Mainline, from London to Liverpool and Manchester in the North West. Several sites have also been identified around Bristol, including the 4km Chipping Sodbury tunnel and elsewhere in the South West, particularly in Devon and Cornwall. The most northerly area to see tunnel improvements is expected at the Calton Tunnels, outside Edinburgh, on the East Coast Mainline. The government has promised the plans will "eliminate mobile signal blackspots in tunnels on key rail routes up and down the country". This is expected to run alongside the East Coast Mainline and parts of the West Coast Main Line and Great Western Mainline. If the initial stages of the scheme are deemed a success, this could grow to 5,000km of cabling. Mobile network operators are expected to pick up the bill for updates to mobile infrastructure in railway stations. So far, 12 of the UK's biggest transport hubs have been chosen: Birmingham New St Bristol Temple Meads Edinburgh Waverley Euston Glasgow Central King's Cross Leeds Liverpool Lime Street Liverpool Street Manchester Piccadilly Paddington Waterloo The infrastructure plans have been largely welcomed by transport campaigners. Bruce Williamson, of campaign group RailFuture, accepted that while the rail network is need of upgrades in lots of areas after having been "starved of investment for decades", anything which improved the experience for travellers would be money well spent. "I think you have to take a common sense view that it is useful – we all have smartphones, it's a sound investment and I think most passengers will agree," said Williamson. "Anything within reason that makes rail travel more practical and agreeable, I think, is a good thing." The final bill for the Project Reach is currently not clear, although work is expected to start next year, with the first phase of work expected to be finished by 2028. If successful, bosses have raises the prospect of a further 3,000 miles (4,800km) worth of cabling being laid "in the near future". Installation is expected to be carried out by infrastructure firm Freshwave, which will recoup costs by selling bandwidth to mobile network operators such as Virgin Media O2, Vodafone or BT's EE. However, it is not currently clear whether this will require any taxpayers' money to be provided upfront for work to begin. While tunnels and other obstacles present the most obvious barrier to a strong mobile phone signal, several factors can limit your coverage while travelling. Cuttings – rail routes which have been excavated through hills with steep slopes on either side of the tracks – can face similar problems to tunnels in receiving signal. Train carriages themselves can also be part of the problem, with the metal used to make them a potential barrier to your phone being able connect to a mast or antenna. And even if your device can connect successfully, the speed at which the train moves can mean your phone is constantly having to search for the next one, meaning inconsistent data speed and a major drain on battery power. Daniel Shannon, a specialist network design expert at Vodafone UK, has compared it to "trying to thread a needle, but with only one hand while the eye of the needle is constantly moving".

British travel retailer WH Smith has complete offloading its UK high street business for a sale price £12m ($16.4m) less than previously disclosed. The retailer closed the sale to investment company Modella Capital to focus on expanding its global travel retail presence. The transaction, initially valued at £52m, has been revised to a maximum of £40m, including an up-front payment of £10m in the fiscal year 2025, an additional £20m tied to the business's cash flow until August 2026 and the remainder as deferred tax assets become payable. A further £10m may be realised based on the timing and realisation of tax assets. Despite the reduced sale value, transaction and separation costs are reported to remain at £27m. Post-transaction, WH Smith anticipates its headline net debt to be £425m as of 31 August 2025. As the peak summer trading period approaches, the travel divisions are expected to perform in line with market expectations. WH Smith stated: 'This transaction is consistent with the group's strategic focus on travel retail and creates a pure play global travel retailer which is well positioned to capture the substantial global growth opportunities in its key markets and drive enhanced shareholder value.' The revised terms were agreed upon after Modella Capital sought amendments due to the changed outlook and trading performance.
