Tawau students lead food safety fight in Germ Buster Challenge
Published on: Tue, Jul 01, 2025 Text Size: TAWAU: More than 360 primary students from across Tawau stepped up as health heroes during the Germ Buster Challenge Sabah 2025, held at SK Tanjung Batu Keramat on June 14. The event, organised by the Sabah State Health Department with the Tawau District Education and Health Offices, aimed to raise awareness on food hygiene and safety issues often linked to food poisoning in schools. 'Food poisoning is preventable. By educating students early, we can break the cycle,' said Deputy State Health Director, Sitti Aralas, who officiated the event. Through fun and interactive activities like the food safety-themed Explorace and hygiene talks, students learned the importance of proper food handling, clean eating environments, and simple habits like look, smell, and taste before eating. SK Tanjung Batu Keramat emerged as the overall winner, followed by SK Jambatan Putih and SK Holy Trinity. Organisers hope the initiative empowers students, especially in Tawau, to be agents of change in promoting safe and healthy eating practices at school. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Over 10,500 women in Malaysia tested HPV-positive
Published on: Saturday, July 05, 2025 Published on: Sat, Jul 05, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: For illustrative purposes only. KUALA LUMPUR: More than 10,500 women in Malaysia have tested positive for human papillomavirus (HPV) through cervical cancer screening efforts by the Health Ministry over the past five years. Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad said the cases were identified under the Action Plan Towards the Elimination of Cervical Cancer 2021–2030, which has screened over 160,000 women nationwide. Advertisement He also highlighted that 65 per cent of women in the country have not undergone cervical cancer screening in the past three years, a figure he described as alarming, given that cervical cancer is among the most preventable forms of the disease. 'A virus causes it and we can detect it early. It is treatable when caught in time and it is entirely eliminable, if we act decisively. Too many women are unaware, hesitant or left behind, often due to fear, stigma or lack of access,' he said during the launch of Etiqa's Free Cervical Screening Programme Phase Five, held in collaboration with the Rose Foundation here today. Dzulkefly noted that scientific advancements such as HPV DNA self-sampling have made screening safer, more private and painless, with about 90 per cent accuracy, requiring screening only once every five to 10 years. On the screening programme, he said the ministry fully supports community-based efforts, such as Program ROSE (Removing Obstacles to Cervical Screening), which leverages corporate partnerships to create sustainable, patient-centred cancer care models. 'Currently, 44 government hospitals are working with Rose to close critical gaps in access to care,' he added. Dzulkefly also commended Etiqa's continued partnership with the Rose Foundation, with the fifth phase of the initiative expected to benefit 4,000 women, especially in underserved communities. 'This initiative not only expands access, but also supports MOH's aspiration to eliminate cervical cancer in Malaysia,' he said. However, Dzulkefly emphasised that eliminating cervical cancer requires more than clinical efforts as it also demands cultural change and shared responsibility. 'Our fight is not just clinical, it is also cultural and social. We must normalise conversations about cervical cancer, challenge the shame surrounding HPV and reaffirm that there is no shame in prevention, only strength,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Obese MACC officers not eligible for promotion from January 2026: Azam Baki
Published on: Thursday, July 03, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jul 03, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: For illustrative purposes only. - AI-generated image KOTA BHARU: Starting January 2026, Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) officers or personnel who are obese or do not meet the required body mass index (BMI) will not be eligible for promotion will not be eligible for promotion, said MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki. He said the move was aimed at emphasising the importance of health among MACC personnel, while also ensuring their fitness remained at an optimal level. 'Many civil servants are dealing with obesity or excessive weight. When we're overweight, it affects our appearance, fitness and service delivery to the public. 'Just imagine if a government officer is overweight; they won't be able to perform well and they'll be at risk of various health problems,' he said at a press conference after the handing over of duties between Kelantan MACC's new director Azmin Yusoff and former director Rosli Husain here today. Azam said a circular on the matter would be issued next week, and all officers would be given six months to manage their health. 'This especially applies to those with weight issues; they need to lose weight unless they have underlying medical conditions. It's important because departments like the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) have already set a BMI requirement for promotions. 'I will implement this at the MACC, as we are also an enforcement agency. I want to make sure our officers are always fit and able to do their job well,' he said. Azam said the MACC has set a maximum BMI limit of 27, with internal administrative directives to be issued soon. 'I had earlier announced that (personnel) at each state would be required to undergo health check-ups at government hospitals every three months. 'State and divisional MACC directors have acted on this. If you have a health issue, seek treatment and change your lifestyle,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Free healthcare at private clinics for eligible STR recipients
Published on: Thursday, July 03, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jul 03, 2025 Text Size: KUALA LUMPUR: Many recipients of the Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR) cash aid are still unaware that they are also eligible for free treatment at selected private clinics across Malaysia. The initiative, known as the Madani Medical Scheme, has been available since June 15, 2023, to provide better healthcare access for low-income groups. Under this scheme, eligible STR recipients can receive free treatment at private clinics without needing to rely solely on public healthcare facilities. The scheme is currently available in ten locations, including Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru, Kota Kinabalu, Kuching, and selected districts in Selangor, Perak, and Penang. Services covered include consultations, check-ups, medication, minor procedures, and follow-up referrals for common acute health issues. Annual claim limits are set at RM250 for households, RM125 for senior citizens without spouses, and RM75 for single individuals. Once the yearly limit is reached, recipients must wait for the next cycle to continue receiving benefits under the scheme. No registration is required - recipients only need to present their MyKad at any participating private clinic. To check eligibility or locate a participating clinic, recipients can visit the ProtectHealth website for updated information. The government hopes this targeted healthcare aid will ease congestion at public clinics and hospitals while supporting B40 families. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
