Reports of R18m found in safe in KZN house fake news, Saps says
The South African Police Service (Saps) says reports of R18 million found in a safe in a house in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) are fake news.
A post shared on a social media platform on Wednesday claimed that the money was found by the National Intervention Unit (NIU).
'The National Intervention Unit (NIU) has raided Dudu Myeni's house and allegedly found R18 million in a safe. The house now belongs to Thalente Myeni, the son,' the post read.
Fake news
Police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said the post on X is fake news.
'The South African Police Service warns against the spread of fake news about an Saps National Intervention Unit (NIU) raid in which R18 million was found in a safe at a house in Richards Bay, KwaZulu-Natal.'

Responsible reporting
Mathe has called for responsible social media reporting and for users to verify information first before sharing.
'The Saps, therefore, confirms no raid was undertaken by any of its units, more so the National Intervention Unit (NIU),' Mathe said.
Fake Mkhwanazi account
Last week, several social media accounts purporting to be KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi surfaced on X, following explosive allegations of political interference in police operations by Police Minister Senzo Mchunu and Deputy National Commissioner for Crime Detection, Shadrack Sibiya.
Since Mkhwanazi made the allegations, several fake accounts have appeared on social media, particularly on X, TikTok and Facebook, using the names and photographs of the top cop.
Legal action
KZN police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said they have taken note of the fake social media accounts.
'Police in KwaZulu-Natal would like to inform the public that Lieutenant General Mkhwanazi does not have a social media account, and declare that all social media accounts bearing his name and photographs are fake. They are being used to deceive the public into believing that it is the provincial commissioner communicating via such platforms.
'Although police are contemplating taking legal steps against those who impersonate the provincial commissioner of KwaZulu-Natal to advance their personal agendas, the public is hereby informed that those profiles are fake and that neither the police in KwaZulu-Natal nor the provincial commissioner have endorsed such fake accounts,' Netshiunda said.

CAPE TOWN - Members of Parliament's ad hoc committee investigating police corruption are ready to get started as early as next week. The National Assembly ad hoc committee investigating the allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi will meet on Tuesday as it races against time to conclude its work within three months. This week, Parliament named the 18-member committee comprising eight parties represented in Parliament. Parliament might be on a lengthy recess, but the multi-party committee is expected to meet during the break from next week. It is going to be a very interesting ad hoc committee, and we really hope that we get clarity for South Africans.' The committee will start its probe in the coming weeks which will look at the nature and implications of relationships between senior police leadership and certain members of the public, among others.

Parliament announces members of ad hoc committee investigating Mkhwanazi allegations
The EFF's Julius Malema is among those who have called on the public to provide information that will lead to the dismantling of criminality. Parliament has announced the members of the ad hoc committee that will investigate allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi about security matters. This after the National Assembly (NA) adopted the joint report of the portfolio committee on police and the portfolio committee on justice and constitutional development on the allegations made by Mkhwanazi on 23 July. The two committees have requested the process to be concluded within 90 days of the committee being instituted, provided that the timeframe may be amended or extended if necessary. There is a further call for the possible need to provide for the protection of potential whistleblowers about the best way to facilitate public participation and transparency. 'As far as possible, meetings should be conducted openly and, whenever possible, broadcast on Parliament TV and its social media channels,' said the two committees during their joint sitting last month. 'Mkhwanazi opened the way' Addressing supporters at the EFFTurns12 rally at Khayelitsha Rugby Stadium on Saturday, EFF leader Julius Malema called on the public to come forward with information. 'People must come to parliament and tell us who the drug lords are and who is protecting them, because we need to start fighting drugs. We want to know where the guns come from in the Cape Flats and Khayelitsha,' Malema said. Police slam misleading reports about busienssman Jerry Boshoga
Police have urged social media users to 'spare a thought for the family'. The South African Police Services (Saps) have slammed irresponsible social media posts after reports emerged online that respected farmer and businessman Jerry Boshoga was found dead. Boshoga was kidnapped in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) in November 2024. His kidnappers were reportedly sending his family videos of him, where they were seen allegedly assaulting him and demanding R10 million ransom for his release. Posts shared on social media on Wednesday claimed that the search for Boshoga, who was reported missing, had ended, as he had been found deceased. Social media reporting Police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe called for responsible social media reporting around the kidnapping case of Boshoga. 'In the last 24 hours, unverified social media accounts have shared misleading and false information claiming that Mr Boshoga has been found deceased. 'The Saps can confirm that the investigation into his kidnapping is still at a very sensitive stage, and the businessman has not been found alive or deceased. We therefore call on all social media users to stop the spread of unverified information,' Mathe said. 'The spreading of such misleading information has caused unnecessary trauma, panic and anxiety for the close family members, including his mother, wife and children. 'The Saps are in close contact with the family, and if there are any developments in the case, the family will be the first to be notified by the investigating team,' Mathe added. Pakistani kidnapping Earlier this month, the Gqeberha-based Serious Organised Crime Investigation team of the Hawks successfully opposed bail for six suspects accused of kidnapping a 55-year-old Pakistani businessman. Two former police officers from the Western Cape were among the four people arrested when Gauteng police rescued the Pakistani businessman more than 776km from where he was kidnapped. Bail ruling Hawks spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Avele Fumba said during a closed court session, the Hawks presented a compelling argument against their release. 'The court sided with the state, denying bail and keeping the suspects in custody. The matter has been remanded to 4 August 2025 for further court proceedings.
