Hong Kong is gearing up for a month of activities showcasing and celebrating intangible cultural heritage in June. The campaign, the first of its kind, will coincide with and support China's Cultural and National Heritage Day. Many events are planned across six districts with the aim of attracting tourists and increasing awareness of the city's traditions. There will be carnivals and fun days, with cultural highlights ranging from a Hakka unicorn dance to Cantonese opera, puppetry, Chinese brush making and dragon boats.
Performances, exhibitions, workshops and conferences will be held at plazas, town halls, museums, libraries and schools. There will also be interactive booths.
Food is an important element, because Hong Kong is hoping the United Nations will recognise the city's culinary heritage. Techniques for making shrimp paste and rice dumplings are among the activities included.

It is good to see efforts being made to maintain the city's traditions and present them to a wider audience. They are a vital and distinctive part of the city's history and culture and continue to appeal to visitors. As Hong Kong embraces everything from 'mega-events' to 'selfie tourism', maintaining its rich traditions must be a priority.

China hotel's use of red pandas for visitors causes concerns
A five-star hotel in China has sparked controversy by using a red panda to deliver morning wake-up calls. Lehe Ledu Liangjiang Hotel is located in Chongqing, in southwestern China. Several guests at the hotel shared videos of morning calls delivered by an adorable red panda. In the videos, the animal climbs onto beds and desks in hotel rooms. Guests were invited to pet and feed it. The hotel opened in 2010. It is part of a tourist resort that includes a wildlife park and more than 100 rooms. One of its services is allowing visitors to get close to animals. The rooms that featured red panda visits cost between 2,000 and 3,000 yuan (HK$2,186 to HK$3,280) per night. The hotel has temporarily suspended this service while an investigation takes place. The hotel has stated that their red pandas are fully vaccinated. There are currently around 6,000 to 7,000 red pandas in China. They are a protected species.

Hong Kong artist turns TCM items into fascinating works of art
Born into a family of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) practitioners, Hong Kong artist So Wing-po was never tempted to follow in her parents' footsteps. Advertisement Rather, a creative sensibility emerged from her childhood fascination with the family's TCM pharmacy in Sheung Wan, a space overflowing with herbs, fruit and animal parts. Now, the 40-year-old has gained recognition for transforming those materials and the holistic philosophy embedded in TCM into a distinct visual language. In her hands, dissected and dried cures seem like living entities, appearing in large-scale installations, sculptures and videos in which they hint at, but are also at a remove from, their traditional uses. Take her kinetic installation Sea Ear Hi Hat (2020), made up of over a dozen abalone shells – a material used in TCM to cleanse the liver, also known as 'sea ears' – that she motorised to open and close like hi-hat cymbals. Their uncanny appearance, steady exhalations, resemblance to human ears and known healing properties imbue Sea Ear Hi Hat with an arresting vitality. Aromas that once travelled oceans now bubble up from local kitchens, telling stories through bay leaf-laced stews, saffron-kissed rice and coconut milk curries that blur borders. Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes, director of the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO), notes that Macanese cuisine – which in 2021 was added to Unesco's National List of Representative Elements of Intangible Cultural Heritage for China – blends spices and herbs from both East and West. 'This year's theme celebrates Macau's rich history as a vibrant trading hub, bridging the cultures of East and West,' she says. 'As an important hub along the Maritime Silk Road , the city became a melting pot of flavours, traditions and influences, shaping Macanese cuisine's unique flavours. By focusing on these ingredients, we [wish to] highlight the evolution of Macau's gastronomic heritage and its harmonious, inclusive identity, aligning with Unesco's values of cultural diversity.
