OECD lowers global outlook

PARIS: Global economic growth is slowing more than expected only a few months ago as the fallout from the Trump administration's trade war takes a bigger toll on the US economy, the OECD said on Tuesday, revising down its outlook.
The global economy is on course to slow from 3.3% last year to 2.9% in 2025 and 2026, the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development said, trimming its estimates from March for growth of 3.1% this year and 3.0% next year.
But the growth outlook would likely be even weaker if protectionism increases, further fuelling inflation, disrupting supply chains and rattling financial markets, the Paris-based organisation said in its latest Economic Outlook.
'Additional increases in trade barriers or prolonged policy uncertainty would further lower growth prospects and likely push inflation higher in countries imposing tariffs,' OECD Secretary General Mathias Cormann said as he presented the report.
If Washington raised bilateral tariffs by an additional 10 percentage points on all countries as compared with the rates in force as of mid-May, global economic output would be about 0.3% lower after two years, Cormann added.
'The key policy priorities in this context are constructive dialogue to ensure a lasting resolution to current trade tensions,' Cormann said.
US President Donald Trump's tariff announcements since he took office in January have already roiled financial markets and fuelled global economic uncertainty, forcing him to walk back some of his initial stances.
Last month, the US and China agreed to a temporary truce to scale back tariffs, while Trump also postponed 50% duties on the European Union until July 9.
The OECD forecast the US economy would grow only 1.6% this year and 1.5% next year, assuming for the purpose of making calculations that tariffs in place mid-May would remain so through the rest of 2025 and 2026.
For 2025, the new forecast marked a sizeable cut as the organisation had previously expected the world's biggest economy would grow 2.2% this year and 1.6% next year.
While new tariffs may create incentives to manufacture in the United States, higher import prices would squeeze consumers' purchasing power and economic policy uncertainty would hold back corporate investment, the OECD warned.
Meanwhile, the higher tariff receipts would only partly offset revenues lost due to the extension of the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, new tax cuts and weaker economic growth, it added.
Trump's sweeping tax cut and spending bill was expected to push the US budget deficit to 8% of economic output by 2026, among the biggest fiscal shortfalls for a developed economy not at war.
As tariffs fuel inflation pressures, the Federal Reserve was seen keeping rates on hold through this year and then cutting the fed funds rate to 3.25-3.5% by the end of 2026.
In China, the fallout from the US tariff hikes would be partly offset by government subsidies for a trade-in programme on consumer goods like mobile phones and appliances and increased welfare transfers, the OECD said.

Shanghai aluminium hits nearly 9-month high on prospect of better China demand

SINGAPORE: The most-traded aluminium contract on the Shanghai Futures Exchange on Tuesday hit the highest since November on possibly better demand for metals from China as authorities vow to stabilise industrial growth, including metals. SHFE aluminium rose 0.75% to 20,900 yuan ($2,913.26) a ton by 0702 GMT, or the highest since November 12. 'Aluminium fundamentals are the most solid among metals in China, especially being the only metal with a smelting capacity capped at 45 million tons, and alumina price surge has also been supportive,' a Shanghai-based metals analyst at a futures company said. SHFE alumina gained 4.23% to 3,452 yuan a ton, or the highest since Feb 26, and aluminium stocks at the SHFE-monitored warehouses totalled 108,822 tons by July 18, or the lowest since February 2024 albeit three consecutive weeks of rebounds. 'The Chinese government's working plans to stabilize industrial growth and the launch of the giant Tibet hydropower plant are all positive signals to the metals market, with the prospect of the country's metals demand boosting the sentiment,' a Beijing-based futures analyst at a futures company said. However, it's unclear how much actual demand will materialise, the analyst added. A Shanghai analyst echoed the view, saying, 'Amid all the uncertainties, such news sounds definite and positive, which may support the commodities futures market for a while.' On July 19, China began building the world's largest hydropower dam on the eastern rim of the Tibetan Plateau at an estimated cost of at least $170 billion. Meanwhile, SHFE nickel gained 1.51% to 123,530 yuan a ton, tin rose 1.11% to 268,520 yuan, zinc grew 0.7% to 22,945 yuan, being the highest since April 2, copper added 0.61% to 79,740 yuan, while lead ticked down 0.21% to 16,900 yuan. On the London Metals Exchange, the three-month zinc gained 0.14% to $2,842.5 a ton, tin inched up 0.1% to $33,845, and copper added 0.07% to $9,866.5, while lead ebbed 0.55% to $2,003.5, nickel fell 0.18% to $15,495, and aliuminium traded flat at $2,645.5.

Japanese yen-led dollar pullback to offer mild support to Indian rupee at open

MUMBAI: The Indian rupee is poised to open slightly higher on Tuesday, supported by a retreat in the dollar index that was largely triggered by a post-electionrally in the Japanese yen. The 1-month non-deliverable forward indicated the rupee will open in the 86.20-86.22 range, versus 86.2925 in the previous session. On Monday, the Indian rupee weakened to 86.35 per dollar, its lowest level in a month, extending its losing streak to four sessions. Bankers attributed the decline to sustained dollar demand from importers and positioning in the non-deliverable forward (NDF) market. A lack of equity inflows has added to the pressure on the currency. The trading range on USD/INR 'has probably shifted higher,' with the 86.00–86.10 now acting as a support zone, a currency trader at a Mumbai-based bank said. 'Interbank is more inclined to buying dips than trying to call the top,' the trader added. The rupee at open is likely to find some support from the drop in the dollar index, which slid 0.62% on Monday — its steepest fall in over a month. The decline was spurred by a 1% jump in the yen. While the ruling coalition lost its majority, Prime Minister Ishiba's remarks that he would stay offered comfort to the yen, analysts said. Outside the yen, other Asian currencies were mixed on Tuesday, with the focus squarely on any progress on trade talks before the August 1 deadline for countries to strike deals with the U.S. or face high tariffs. Focus will also be on the outlook for Federal Reserve rate cuts. Last week, Fed Governor Christopher Waller signalled he may dissent at next week's meeting, where policymakers are widely expected to keep rates unchanged. 'Waller remains in the distinct minority of two. We'll likely need to see very soft data, especially on the labour market, to convince investors that early cuts are on the table,' ING Bank said in a note.

Pakistan's textile manufacturer approves revival strategy, eyes entry into IT sector

The Board of Directors of Bilal Fibres Limited, a textile manufacturer, has approved a business plan to launch an IT Division, anchored by a substantial Rs10 million investment. The listed company, which continues to face operational suspension, disclosed its revival strategy in a notice to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) on Monday. The company shared that its IT Division would target small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Pakistan and the Middle East, with potential for global expansion. The division would offer a broad suite of services, including website and e-commerce platform development, mobile app development and MVP builds, IT support services, SaaS and subscription-based platforms and custom enterprise software for SMEs. The company aims to 'deliver cost-effective, high-quality IT solutions, capitalising on Pakistan's skilled workforce and strategic industry partnerships' with organisations such as P@SHA and PITB. Sharing the financial projections, the company anticipates annual revenue ranging from Rs12 million to Rs70 million, with breakeven targeted within 18 months and strong profitability expected within two years. Earlier this month, Bilal Fibres informed that it is now actively engaging with stakeholders, technical experts, and consultants to finalise a comprehensive business plan for its proposed entry into IT, health tech, and Electric Vehicle (EV) sectors. 'During the quarter ended 30th June 2025, the company's operations remained suspended, and no business activities were undertaken. However, as a first step towards revival, the Board of Directors (BOD) have approved the proposal to establish IT/health tech/EV division as a potential secondary line of business,' the Lahore-based company said in its notice back then. Established in 1987, Bilal Fibres Limited engages in the manufacture and sale of yarn in Pakistan. It offers poly/cotton, poly/viscose, CVC, viscose, and cotton yarns for weaving or knitting applications. The company also exports its products to Europe, the Far East, and the Middle East.
