KUCHING (May 16): The KETEQ.AI nano chip, developed by Sarawakian innovators, is currently awaiting international intellectual property (IP) registration as the world's first artificial intelligence (AI)-powered power conversion device.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg revealed that the chip, developed by local firm Sarawak Microelectronics Design (SMD) Semiconductor, is capable of executing real-time AI functions within just a tenth of a second.
'We are waiting for the international IP registration, and that will be the first in the world,' he said during the Jelajah Malaysia Digital event at Tegas Digital Village here today.
Abang Johari also shared that he had briefed Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on the breakthrough and hoped the Prime Minister would officially launch the chip after its IP registration.
'I told the Prime Minister that once the registration is confirmed, I want him to see it and officially launch it,' he said.
Drawing a comparison with global tech giants, he added: 'You know, it is like Nvidia. Nvidia does not produce chips, they just design them.
'And this is what we design. If that is the way, I tell you, it is global,' he said.
Abang Johari further disclosed that the chip was developed in a lab in Cardiff, Wales, with support from the British government.
He noted that prominent multinational companies such as General Electric and Siemens are involved in related research efforts at the facility. abang johari AI chip KETEQ AI Kuching power converter world's first

Florian Wirtz unfazed by Liverpool's record transfer fee

FLORIAN Wirtz insists his hefty price tag 'doesn't matter' as he gears up for his Premier League debut with Liverpool. The 22-year-old attacking midfielder joined the Reds from Bayer Leverkusen in a deal worth up to £116 million, potentially setting a British transfer record. Speaking after Liverpool's 3-2 friendly win over Athletic Bilbao, Wirtz remained unfazed by the financial figures. 'I don't think about it. I just want to play football, and how much money clubs pay between each other doesn't matter,' he said. Wirtz emphasized his commitment to Liverpool's title defense, stating, 'The big challenge is to win the title again. I'll try to create chances and work hard off the ball. I can run a lot and bring that energy to the team.' Liverpool begin their season with the Community Shield against Crystal Palace on Sunday, followed by their Premier League opener against Bournemouth on August 15. Wirtz acknowledged the differences between English and German football, saying, 'It's more intense and physical here, but I'm ready to learn and improve.' The Reds have splashed over £250 million this summer, signing Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong, and Giorgi Mamardashvili. A rejected £110 million bid for Newcastle's Alexander Isak further highlights their ambitious spending. Manager Arne Slot praised Wirtz's creativity, comparing him to the departed Trent Alexander-Arnold. 'Flo brings a different kind of quality in the final third,' Slot said. Liverpool also paid tribute to Diogo Jota, who tragically died in a car crash last month. Slot expressed the club's grief, vowing to support Jota's family. 'We will always carry him in our hearts,' he wrote. - AFP

Stocks climb tracking tariffs, US Fed

LONDON: European and Asian stock markets rose Tuesday as tariff threats eased and as investors grow increasingly confident that the US Federal Reserve will cut interest rates next month. The gains, helped also by some strong earnings, tracked Monday's rally on Wall Street. The dollar jumped against the euro and yen. Oil prices retreated after US President Donald Trump's threat to raise tariffs on India over its purchases of Russian crude. "European markets continue to wave off any concerns around the direction of travel for the US economy and Thursday's looming tariff day," noted Joshua Mahony, chief market analyst at Rostro trading group. Trump's fresh tariffs on dozens of US trade partners are set to kick in on August 7, almost one week later than planned. The European Union on Tuesday announced the suspension of its retaliatory tariffs on US goods worth 93 billion euros ($107 billion) after Brussels struck a deal with Washington last month. "The commission has today adopted the necessary legal procedures to suspend the implementation of our EU countermeasures, which were due to kick in on August 7," EU trade spokesman Olof Gill said. Ahead of the new deadline, Mahony said traders were focused "on the continued strength seen in second-quarter earnings season and the new dovish outlook for the Federal Reserve". Weakness in the US jobs market has raised concerns that the world's biggest economy is in worse shape than expected, fanning bets that the Fed will cut interest rates in September. Some analysts remained sceptical, however. "I continue to believe the Fed will not reduce rates at all this year given rising inflation caused by tariffs and a relatively stable unemployment rate," said Lazard chief market strategist Ronald Temple. On the corporate front, shares in BP climbed 2.4 percent in London midday deal after the British energy giant surprised with better-than-expected earnings in the second quarter.

Ringgit ends higher against US dollar on Fed rate cut hopes

KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit continued to close higher against the US dollar as expectations of an interest rate cut by the US Federal Reserve (Fed) gained momentum, said an analyst. At 6pm, the local note climbed to 4.2260/2310 against the greenback from Monday's close of 4.2350/2385. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said that risky assets such as equities have been rising as a lower interest environment would be positive for corporate finances, especially on their cost of borrowings. Commenting on the US Fed, the economist noted that a series of Fed speakers are expected to shed more light on the future direction of US interest rates. He noted that several Fed officials, San Francisco Fed President Mary Daly, Boston Fed President Susan Collins, and Fed Governor Lisa Cook, will be speaking to the public on Thursday. "Our sense is that the market would want to hear the latest conviction among the Fed as to how the interest rate would evolve in the months to come, especially in the September Federal Open Market Committee meeting," he told Bernama. At the close, the ringgit ended firmer against major currencies. It rose against the Japanese yen to 2.8618/8654 from 2.8652/8677 at the close on Monday, gained versus the British pound to 5.6159/6226 from 5.6296/6342, and was higher against the euro to 4.8772/8830 from 4.8978/9018 previously. The ringgit was also strengthened against regional peers. It improved against the Singapore dollar to 3.2793/2834 from 3.2878/2908, inched up versus the Thai baht to 13.0408/0627 from 13.0452/0616, strengthened against the Indonesian rupiah to 257.8/258.2 from 258.2/258.5 and improved against the Philippine peso to 7.33/7.34 from 7.38/7.39 previously.
