13 Odia students evacuated from conflict-torn Israel
The students are pursuing PhD from Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Weizmann Institute of Science and Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Heaving a sigh of relief, the students said they were waiting since the last 10 days for being evacuated from the conflict-hit country.
'Ever since the war broke out, we have been living in a precarious condition amidst uncertainty. It was the Indian Embassy that wrote to all universities where Indian students were studying for immediate evacuation,' said a student of Ben-Gurion University Nisharani Bishoyi. Nisharani was rescued along with six other Odia students from the university.
The students were all brought back in an IAD C-17 flight. 'While there was no immediate threat at our institution, the situation was worse at many other places. There were some Indian students in Israel who were injured in drone attacks. We are thankful to both the Ministry of External Affairs and the Odisha government for facilitating our safe evacuation,' said another student Baidyanath Sahoo.
Back in Delhi, the office of chief resident commissioner, Government of Odisha, activated a 24x7 control room which coordinated with the Indian Embassy and helped in facilitating the safe return of these students. 'The control room has remained in constant touch with the Odia students in Israel over their mobile phones while they were crossing over from Israel borders to Jordan and Egypt to ascertain their safe travel back to India,' an official said.

Lahar Singh alleges organised campaign by Congress against constitutional bodies like ECI and SC
Taking exception to Congress MLC B.K. Hariprasad's observations against the Supreme Court and other courts, BJP Rajya Sabha MP Lahar Singh Siroya has accused the Congress of taking up an organised propaganda under Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi against Constitutional institutions like Election Commission of India and Supreme Court. In a social media post, Mr. Singh said, 'It is unfortunate that Mr. Hariprasad has cast aspersions on the Supreme Court of India after it warned Mr. Rahul Gandhi for his remarks on the Indian army, on Monday.' Recalling Mr. Hariprasad's remarks, he said, 'In his Kannada X post, Mr. Hariprasad has said that the Supreme Court's remarks on Rahul Gandhi is indicative not just of the falling standards of the court, but is also of its support to dictatorial attitude.' Mr. Hariprasad also says that the court has disrespected a person who is recognised by our Constitution as shadow prime minister. How can someone who holds a constitutional post disrespect another person who holds a constitutional post, he says targeting the judge. At the end, he shockingly says the Supreme Court and some High Courts are making politically inspired observations and judgements in recent times.' 'Whether Mr. Hariprasad's comments constitute contempt of court is not for me to decide. But as a politician I recognise a very organised propaganda of the Congress party under Mr. Rahul Gandhi which is trying to assault institutions like the Election Commission of India and the Supreme Court of India. To save their party they want to spread lies and anarchy,' Mr. Singh alleged.

‘Fueling the war machine': Trump threatens hike in tariffs on India in next 24 hours
US President Donald Trump on Tuesday warned that he would 'very substantially' raise tariffs on imports from India within the next 24 hours, citing New Delhi's continued purchase of Russian oil, a day after he announced on Truth Social that he would be hiking duties on India. 'They're fueling the war machine, and if they're going to do that, then I'm not going to be happy,' Trump told CNBC in an interview. He added that India's high tariff rates on American goods remained a key sticking point in bilateral trade relations. However, Trump did not specify the new tariff rate he intends to impose on Indian imports. On July 31, ahead of the August 1 deadline, Trump said he would slap at 25 per cent tariff plus an unspecified 'penalty' on India for trading with Russia.

US tariff war poses threat to Kerala's key exports, says Finance Minister K N Balagopal
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The US trade war against countries across the globe poses a serious threat to world trade and the global economy, and its consequences could be especially damaging for Kerala's export-driven sectors, K N Balagopal, the state finance minister, said here on Tuesday. Products like marine goods, spices and tea — major export items from Kerala — would be hit hard if the US goes ahead with a proposed 25 per cent tariff on Indian goods, he warned. He was inaugurating a seminar on Post-Covid Development Challenges and Response: Through the Lens of Kerala Budgets, organised by the Gulati Institute of Finance and Taxation (GIFT). Balagopal said developed countries such as the US and Australia have been mounting pressure on the Union government to open up the Indian market for agricultural and dairy imports. Reports indicate that Australia can sell milk in India at Rs 30 per litre. If cheaper milk is allowed into the Kerala market, local dairy farmers will be in serious trouble, he said. The minister also criticised the campaign that Kerala is in a debt trap, with claims that the state's total debt has risen to Rs 6 trillion. 'This is absolutely baseless. A section of so-called experts is spreading false information about Kerala's debt position through social media,' he said. The state's total debt by the end of FY 2025-26 would be around Rs 4.7 lakh crore. Based on a trend seen over the past three decades, Kerala's debt has doubled every five years. Had that pattern continued, it would have already crossed Rs 6 trillion, he said.
