Aanand L Rai in shock as production house plans to re-release 'Raanjhanaa' with AI-powered climax: 'They may change 'Sholay' climax by keeping Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra's characters alive'
Aanand L Rai 's 'Raanjhanaa' is set to return to theatres on August 1 as it celebrates 12 years since its release in 2013. The movie ends with Dhanush's character, Kundan, dying after being shot at a political rally. The storyline has remained memorable for fans who appreciated its tragic depth. The makers have stirred a storm with the announcement of an alternate climax for the movie, which is reportedly created using Artificial Intelligence. Aanand reacted to the new announcement and shared his disappointment. Director Not Informed of AI-Driven Climax Change Recently shared posters of 'Raanjhanaa' had a line in them about having a different climax using AI for its re-release. Rai, who directed and co-produced the original under his banner, was neither consulted nor informed prior to the studio's decision. 'I got to know through a social media announcement a couple of days ago. People have already been messaging me asking me why that ending is being changed. I just can't wrap my head around this,' he shared in an interview with The Indian Express. He reached out to the film's production house, owned by Krishika Lulla, but his objections were dismissed. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like An engineer reveals: One simple trick to get internet without a subscription Techno Mag Learn More Undo He now plans to formally request that his name be removed from the reworked version. Rai said, 'I don't get it, how can they do this? It's an ending people have loved! If not the filmmaker, at least listen to the audience.' He further criticised the need for a so-called 'happy ending'. 'What is a happy ending? It's a tragedy, that's an emotion. How can you meddle with emotions? The voice of the film lies in that ending,' he added. Raanjhanaa: 'Tu Mun Shudi' song A Cautionary Tale for Filmmakers Rai further shared that the only lesson he has learnt from this is that he will be more careful in the future while signing any contracts with no clear clause in it. He also wanted other filmmakers to learn from his incident. 'A studio doesn't care about the story. Just to earn a few crores, they're tampering with a writer, director, and actor's creation,' he stated. AI Recut Reportedly Sold in Tamil Nadu The production house had reportedly sold the altered version to a Tamil Nadu-based distributor. Rai believes that they are trying to test the market in Tamil Nadu with it, and they might have paid them some money already. He called it a crime and admitted that his hero (Dhanush) has a strong presence there, which may affect his stardom. Rai feels the studio is prioritising quick profits over creative integrity. 'They'll realise it soon, when the actors and the audience get back to them. No actors would want to work with them now. Maybe they don't want to work with actors anymore. They plan to make films with AI only,' he shared. Aanand is not against the use of AI He further clarified that he is not against the use of AI, but changing the past using the technology sounds ridiculous to him. 'Next thing we know, they may change the climax of Sholay (1975) by keeping both Jai (Amitabh Bachchan) and Veeru (Dharmendra) alive,' he concluded. About Raanjhanaa 'Raanjhanaa' featured Dhanush, Sonam Kapoor , Abhay Deol, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, and Swara Bhaskar in key roles.
