With a series of initiatives and partnerships, MPOC is dedicated to aligning sustainable palm oil practices with the broader goal of environmental conservation. Key Conservation Initiatives by MPOC Malaysian Palm Oil Wildlife Conservation Fund (MPOWCF) Since its inception in 2006, and its evolution into the Malaysian Palm Oil Green Conservation Foundation (MPOGCF) in 2021, this fund has been pivotal in directing resources towards various wildlife conservation projects throughout Malaysia. Working alongside government bodies, NGOs, academic institutions, and industry stakeholders, MPOWCF/MPOGCF plays a crucial role in protecting endangered species and revitalizing habitats. Reforestation and Tree Planting Projects The MPOGCF is spearheading extensive reforestation campaigns, such as the One Million Trees Planting Project, which targets the restoration of 2,500 hectares of degraded forest within Sabah's Ulu Segama-Malua Forest Reserve. Between 2021 and 2023, roughly 80,000 trees spanning 12 different species were planted, enhancing orangutan habitats and generating employment opportunities for local communities. Elephant Grass Planting and Conflict Mitigation To mitigate human-elephant conflicts, the MPOGCF has launched the Elephant Grass (Napier Grass) Planting Project in Brumas, Sabah. This project promotes the use of designated wildlife corridors by elephants, reducing their need to venture into agricultural lands and fostering a peaceful coexistence with farming activities. Research and Collaboration MPOGCF actively supports biodiversity research in partnership with institutions like Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia and Universiti Malaysia Sarawak. These studies are essential for understanding biodiversity within palm oil plantations and for shaping more effective conservation strategies. Community Engagement and Education MPOC engages local communities through educational initiatives, aiming to enhance awareness of biodiversity and encourage sustainable practices. Efforts include the creation of biodiversity education parks in Kuala Terengganu, which serve as platforms for public involvement and conservation education. Impact and Outlook Malaysia has committed approximately 56% of its land area to conservation, demonstrating a balanced approach to biodiversity preservation and economic development. The palm oil sector's compliance with the Malaysia Sustainable Palm Oil (MSPO) certification scheme ensures that environmental standards, such as maintaining buffer zones and riparian strips, are upheld. Through a collaborative model that includes government, NGOs, academia, and industry, MPOC's conservation endeavors have been crucial in protecting iconic species like the orangutan, Malayan tiger, Bornean pygmy elephant, and sun bear. These efforts underscore the potential for sustainable palm oil production to coexist with wildlife conservation, thereby supporting Malaysia's environmental commitments and sustainable development objectives.
