Plea in Kerala HC against converting fuel bunk toilets into public facilities as per revised Swachh guidelines
Justice C S Dias, on the petition filed by the Petroleum Traders Welfare and Legal Service Society and four of its members who own petrol bunks, directed the govt to produce the revised guidelines of the Swachh Bharat Mission - Urban. The court further adjourned the petition to Monday.
The petitioners stated in the petition that the local self-govt authorities were illegally converting/treating private toilets maintained within the premises of their retail outlets as public toilets and pasting posters on a conspicuous portion of the toilets along with certain switches that seem to indicate that the same is to be used for feedback.
Similarly, posters including QR codes were also affixed in toilets for feedback, they stated.
The petitioners argued that the alleged action of the local self-govt institutions is a violation of Article 300A of the Constitution, which guarantees protection from being deprived of the proper and independent enjoyment of private properties falling within the realm of private ownership. They further raised security concerns, contending that the decision would lead to unauthorised public access to petrol retail outlets, significantly increasing the risk of fire and other catastrophic incidents due to the influx of people in a restricted area.
The petitioners further sought a directive to the state govt and the local self-govt institutions to refrain from converting/treating private toilets maintained within the premises of the petrol retail outlets within the state as public toilets and also for a general declaration against treating such private toilets as public toilets.

Malawi President recalls Parliament to amend voting law
Malawian President Lazarus Chakwera has ordered the country's recently dissolved Parliament to reconvene on August 5 to amend the voting law to ensure that all eligible citizens, including those assigned to duty on election day, can cast their votes. Malawi's 2019-2025 Parliament was dissolved on Wednesday by National Assembly Speaker Catherine Gotani Hara, in line with constitutional provisions for an election year. However, the Constitution empowers the president to recall Parliament before a general election if a constitutional crisis is deemed to have arisen, Xinhua News Agency reported. A supplement to the government Gazette dated Friday and signed by Chakwera confirmed the decision to reconvene Parliament to consider amending the Presidential, Parliamentary, and Local Government Elections Act. A follow-up statement from the State House on Saturday provided further clarification. "President Chakwera... has ordered that Parliament be reconvened for an emergency session on Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2025, to amend the Presidential, Parliamentary, and Local Government Elections Act in order to allow Malawians who will be posted on duty for various electoral services in various parts of the country on election day to cast their vote where they are posted, instead of where they registered," the statement read. It added that the proposed amendment seeks to safeguard every Malawian's constitutional right to vote. Malawi is scheduled to hold its general election on September 16 to elect the president, members of Parliament, and local government councillors. More than 20 presidential aspirants, including incumbent President Chakwera and two former presidents, Peter Mutharika and Joyce Banda, have declared their intention to contest the presidency. Malawi's President Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera was sworn into office on June 28, 2020. Before joining frontline politics, Chakwera was President of the Malawi Assemblies of God from 1989 until he resigned on May 14, 2013 to contest in the 2014 General Elections as a presidential candidate for the Malawi Congress Party.

J&K statehood must be restored for Constitutional respect, says Farooq Abdullah
Veteran politician and president of National Conference, Farooq Abdullah, has said if the Constitution of the country has to be respected, statehood for Jammu and Kashmir should be restored and that the recent Pahalgam terror attack could have been prevented had the local government been in charge of the security."It's not a question of being hopeful," Abdullah said in reply to a query about the growing demand for the restoration of statehood in the Union Territory."If the Constitution of India is to be respected, states are never converted into UTs. A UT is converted into a state. The tragedy is that they converted a state into a UT. And what did they achieve?" he told PTI here recalled that "promises" were made when Article 370 was abrogated six years ago on August 5, 2019, that "terrorism would disappear"."Has militancy disappeared? Or has it increased?" he said, adding, "The Centre should answer this in the parliament". Abdullah said that the people were "expecting" that statehood for Jammu and Kashmir would be announced soon. "Already, all the opposition parties are fighting for us also in the have seen recently, (Congress President Mallikarjun) Kharge and Rahul Gandhi's letter to the Prime Minister (Narendra Modi) asking that the statehood must be restored." Abdullah recalled that the central government has made promises "to us in Parliament and also committed themselves in the Supreme Court". The veteran politician, who has been the chief minister of the erstwhile state three times and also a Union Minister, questioned the Centre's motive behind "downgrading" the state."And what did they achieve? Here people have the right to speak what they want," he said while answering a question about the difference of opinion between the party and Srinagar MP Aga Ruhullah Pakistan's role, Abdullah's stance was firm. "Pakistan is not going to give up. Therefore, what is the way forward? War is never a solution to any problem," he advocated for a peaceful solution that would be "honourable for India, honourable for Pakistan, and honourable for the people of Jammu and Kashmir". To a question about separatist leader Bilal Lone announcing joining the mainstream, he said, "I am very glad, very happy that they have realised that J-K is a part of India", and expressed the hope that the leader could now contribute to the welfare of the people after "years spent in the wilderness".
