Australia, NZ dollars underpinned as trade deals buff sentiment

SYDNEY: The Australian and New Zealand dollars held firm on Wednesday as news of a potential U.S. trade deal with Japan salved risk sentiment, but also lessened some of the uncertainty that has been plaguing the greenback.
President Donald Trump said on Tuesday the U.S. and Japan had struck a trade deal that included a 15% tariff, below the 25% threatened, though a lack of detail limited the overall reaction.
'The deals are providing some boost to market sentiment on the grounds that worst case tariff rates have been avoided,' said Shane Oliver, chief economist at AMP.
'That said, the rates so far are way up on levels at the start of the year and still pose the threat of a significant negative impact on U.S. economic growth and global trade disruption.'
The reaction in currency markets was cautious, leaving the Aussie a fraction firmer at $0.6562, having bounced 0.5% overnight as the U.S. dollar eased broadly.
That put a buffer between last week's low of $0.6454 and refocused attention on the recent eight-month peak of $0.6595.
The kiwi dollar held at $0.6006, after rallying almost 0.6% overnight and away from a recent trough of $0.5906. Resistance now lies around $0.6043.
There was no domestic data of note, though Australia's statistician did release more details of the upcoming switch to a full monthly consumer price series that could speed up the pace of interest rate changes.
Australia is one of the few developed world countries to report CPI quarterly, making it hard for policymakers to read inflation trends in a timely manner.
The Reserve Bank of Australia skipped a rate cut this month in large part to wait for a reading on second quarter CPI due on July 30. The steady decision badly wrong-footed markets, an outcome that might well have been avoided if a full monthly CPI had been in place.
Indeed, the RBA has a long history of waiting for quarterly CPI readings before changing rates, suggesting the start of the new series in November could accelerate the whole process.
The head of the central bank, Michele Bullock, is due to speak on inflation and employment on Thursday and is likely to be asked the importance of the data shift.
Markets currently imply a near 100% chance the RBA will cut the 3.85% cash rate at its next meeting in August, and lower it to 3.10% by the end of the year.

Oil prices climb on US-EU trade optimism, Russian gasoline cuts

SINGAPORE: Oil prices rose on Friday, buoyed by optimism over a potential trade deal between the U.S. and the European Union and reports of Russian plans to restrict gasoline exports to most countries. Brent crude futures gained 17 cents, or 0.3%, to $69.35 a barrel by 0027 GMT. U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures climbed 15 cents, or 0.2%, to $66.18 per barrel. Oil settled 1% higher on Thursday, driven by media reports of expected cuts to Russian gasoline exports. This overshadowed news of Chevron Corp potentially securing U.S. approval to resume production in Venezuela. President Donald Trump's administration is preparing to allow limited oil operations in the sanctioned OPEC nation, the Wall Street Journal reported. U.S. crude inventory draws and hopes for a trade deal between the U.S. and the EU for lower tariffs were lifting futures, which fell earlier in the week over fears of a worsening global trade war. 'I am encouraged by the way crude oil held and bounced away from the $65/64 support band this week, which keeps hopes intact of a rebound back towards $70,' said Tony Sycamore, an analyst at IG. U.S. Energy Information Administration data on Wednesday showed crude inventories fell last week by 3.2 million barrels to 419 million barrels, far exceeding analysts' expectations in a Reuters poll for a 1.6 million-barrel draw. Two European diplomats said on Wednesday that the EU and the U.S. were moving toward a trade deal that could include a 15% U.S. baseline tariff on EU imports and possible exemptions. That could pave the way for another major trade agreement following a deal with Japan. Investors will also be turning their focus to upcoming economic data next week from the world's top two economies and largest oil consumer - factory activity data from China and key U.S. indicators such as inflation, jobs and inventory data. 'It is a big week next week data-wise,' IG's Sycamore said.

SBP should reduce interest rate to 6pc: S M Tanveer

LAHORE: S M Tanveer, Patron-in-Chief UBG, has stated that the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) should reduce the interest rate to 6% given the fact that the country's CPI index is 0.3%, while the average inflation is 4% at present. He said the International Monetary Fund also recommends keeping interest rates positive relative to inflation. According to him, Pakistan's current interest rate of 11% is excessively high especially considering the inflation rate is around 4%. With the upcoming monetary policy announcement on July 30, he has urged the State Bank of Pakistan to reduce the interest rate in order to stimulate economic growth. Tanveer pointed out that the government has accounted for Rs8.5 trillion under the head of bank interest rate, and reducing the interest rate to 6% could save approximately Rs3.5 trillion. This reduction would have a positive impact on the economy, particularly for industries struggling with high interest rates and electricity costs. Pakistani exports could become more competitive globally, as interest rates in international markets range between 4-5%. However, he said, the recent budget measures, including sections 37A and 37B granting powers of arrest and detention will further stifle business growth. Tanveer emphasized the need for a business-friendly environment, urging the government to reconsider these measures and focus on creating conditions that foster growth, investment, and competitiveness. It may be noted that the State Bank of Pakistan has maintained a policy rate of 11% recently, citing inflation and external sector vulnerabilities. Copyright Business Recorder, 2025

Japan's Topix rallies to record high in trade deal afterglow

TOKYO: Japan's Topix index climbed to a record high on Thursday and the Nikkei share average hit a new one-year peak, as stocks rallied for a second straight session after Tokyo struck a long-awaited trade deal with Washington. The Topix advanced as much as 2.1% to reach 2,986.63 for the first time ever. The Nikkei gained as much as 2.2% to 42,065.83, crossing the psychological 42,000 mark for the first time since July of last year. The trade deal announced late on Tuesday by US President Donald Trump reduced a reciprocal rate and autos-specific levies to 15%, from the 25% Washington had threatened previously. Signs that the European Union may soon agree its own tariff agreement with the US also lifted overall market sentiment. The rubber index, which includes tyre makers, jumped 3.3% after advancing 2% a day earlier. The Topix transport equipment index gained just 0.2%, but that followed a nearly 11% surge in the previous session.
