Sampdoria have since fallen from the top of the game to mid-table mediocrity to relegation from Serie A in 2023.
The club were expected to bounce back to the top-flight in Italy but finished 7th in their first season in the second tier.
It then got even worse for the club as they finished last season 18th and in the automatic relegation spots.
They were then given hope as Brescia went bust and took their relegation spot and Sampdoria were put into a play-off against Salernitana.
Sampdoria now look set to stay in Serie B after the second leg of the tie was abandoned.
Alberico Evani's were 4-0 up on aggregate and 2-0 up on the night before Salernitana fans got the game called off by throwing flares.
police attempted to restore order in the stands.
The official did attempt to restart the match, but more objects were thrown, which led to the abandonment.

Salernitana would have survived if they had drawn the tie as they finished higher in the table.
Italian media now believe that Sampdoria will be awarded a 3-0 win due to the circumstances.
This means they would win the play-off tie 5-0 on aggregate and escape a first-ever relegation to Serie C.
The match had originally been expected to take place on Friday but was postponed.
This was due to an outbreak of food poisoning among the Salernitana camp.
21 members of the club fell ill after the first leg was lost 2-0 at the Luigi Ferraris Stadium in Genoa.
Sampdoria appear to believe that they will be playing in Serie B next season.
After the game, the team posted a celebratory picture on social media with the message: "Mission accomplished."

Aston Villa star John McGinn launches scathing attack on 'unfair' Premier League rules

Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn has hit out at the Premier League's spending rules, which he feels are unfairly holding the club back and giving the 'big six' an advantage John McGinn has criticised the Premier League's spending rules, arguing that they are hindering Aston Villa and giving the 'big six' an unfair advantage. ‌ This summer, the club's owners, V Sports, have been unable to splash out to strengthen Unai Emery's squad in a bid to secure another Champions League finish. Villa have two routes to UEFA's elite club competition next season: through their league position and the Europa League, which they qualified for after finishing sixth last term. ‌ Villa have only brought in two players this summer - one of whom could be loaned out: Zepiqueno Redmond, who joined on a free transfer at the start of last month. Goalkeeper Marco Bizot has been the only other addition, coming from Stade Brest to replace Robin Olsen. ‌ As a result of being in Europe, Villa must also comply with UEFA's squad cost rules this summer, which restrict spending on wages relative to a club's revenue. Villa narrowly missed out on a return to the Champions League on the final day of last season after a 2–0 defeat to Manchester United, but the result was tainted by a mistake from referee Thomas Bramall. He blew his whistle when Morgan Rogers won the ball from Altay Bayindir before putting it in the back of the net, meaning VAR couldn't overturn the decision. At that point in the match, Villa were already in the top five because Newcastle were losing to Everton, so even a draw would have been enough to cross the line. "There will be a tinge of jealousy watching the Champions League this year, but our aim is to go as far as we possibly can in the Europe League, try to get back into the Champions League, which helps the club not only for next season and for many years moving forward," McGinn told Birmingham Live exclusively. ‌ "We have seen the impact it has now. I don't know any details about that, but you don't have to be clever to realise that if you want to compete with the big boys, there are rules which are pretty much unfair if you ask me. "We have got owners who want to invest in the team and want to spend to kick the club on, but they are not allowed to do it. It's tough to see. The rules are similar for a lot of the clubs." ‌ Despite his dislike of the rules, McGinn feels they could unite Villa this season. "I think it [being at a disadvantage] unites everyone, the manager and the players," he said. "It's the same for every supporter that they want a new toy. When you've not got them in the summer, you think, 'oh, where are they'. But then you realise that we are actually alright here. "We just signed Bouba [Kamara] on a new long-term contract, and he is one of the best midfielders in Europe. We have held onto some big players. It's not all doom and gloom. We are positive going into the new season and make it a special one. "Ever since the manager has come in, we have achieved something which we haven't done before. He is as motivated as us to do the same." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Dele Alli 'looking for a new club' after being banished from Como squad by Cesc Fabregas - amid claims former Tottenham star was 'considering retirement'

Dele Alli is reportedly searching for a new club after being left out of Como's preseason plans by manager Cesc Fabregas. This news comes after reports in Italy stated that the former England international was contemplating retirement at just 29 years old, following a turbulent half-decade in football. Dele is training away from Como's squad as they prepare for their preseason camp in Marbella, and now appears to be a surplus to requirements at the Serie A club, just months after joining from Everton. Nevertheless, Dele still wants to continue his playing career, while Como have told him he must do so elsewhere, according to The Telegraph. The former Tottenham star made just one appearance for the club, which last just nine minutes. After coming off the bench for his debut in March, he was sent off for a challenge on fellow English midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek. It remains to be seen what level Dele continues his football career at, but a move to a Premier League club would certainly be an unlikely lifeline. Dele's exit from Como marks another sobering chapter in a career that once promised so much. He burst onto the scene as a teenage sensation at MK Dons before securing a move to Spurs in 2015, where he won back-to-back PFA Young Player of the Year awards. Aged 22, he starred for England at the 2018 World Cup, helping the Three Lions reach the semi-finals. However, following the departure of Mauricio Pochettino at Spurs, Dele struggled to win the trust of successive managers and was eventually shipped out to Everton in 2022. A loan move to Besiktas followed but was cut short due to injury and disciplinary issues. Dele has previously spoken about the mental toll his career has taken, bravely opening up in an emotional interview in 2023 about childhood trauma and his struggles with addiction. He explained that he had been molested at the age of six, started smoking and dealing drugs by eight, and had attempted to take his own life during his darkest moments. The midfielder revealed in early 2024 that he had been targeting a spot at the 2026 World Cup with England as he looks at an eventual return to international football. Dele previously starred as an England regular and played at Euro 2016 and the World Cup in Russia two years later, but hasn't featured since making his 37th international appearance six years ago. 'You know you can set reminders on your phone, I have a reminder at 11 o'clock every day that says, "World Cup 2026",' he said on Sky Sports in April last year. 'That's my aim for now. I think that people will be like, "he hasn't played in a year" but I don't care, I know my level. 'The only target I have is the World Cup right now. Obviously I'm injured and contracted to Everton and so my mind is just about taking it day by day and making sure my injury is healed and that I'm in the best possible condition after the summer. 'It's annoying because I'll be just fully training as the season ends so it means that I won't have to rush it.'
