Herald-Banner earns 11 honors at state newspaper convention
Topping the winner's list for the Herald-Banner was longtime sports editor David Claybourn who was named the Class A Star Sports Reporter of the Year.
The Star Awards are the top individual honors with newspapers and online media outlets competing in three divisions. The Herald-Banner competed in bi-weekly and ti-weekly division.
In addition to Claybourn's win, the Herald-Banner also placed in three other Star Awards categories with editor Kent Miller claiming second for Star Designer of the Year and third for Star Opinion Writer of the Year. Laurie White King received honorable mention for Star Photojournalist of the Year.
Staffers also collected seven other individual awards with Claybourn earning second in news photography and third in sports column writing, Miller earning third in feature writing and honorable mention in general column writing and deadline writing, King earning second in photojournalism and Warren Morrison earning second in headline writing.
The Herald-Banner finished third in the overall Class A division for total individual awards behind the Nacogdoches Daily-Sentinel (16 awards) and the Lufkin Daily News (12). Awards are based on work published in 2024.
Other newspapers competing in Class A included the Abilene Reporter-News, El Paso Inc., the Baytown Sun, the Odessa American, the Bryan-College Station Eagle, The San Angelo Standard-Times, the Sequin Gazette-Enterprise, the Wichita Falls Times Record News and others.

Nebraska baseball alum Mason McConnaughey signs with Texas Rangers
The Texas Rangers signed former Nebraska baseball pitcher Mason McConnaughey to a signing bonus of $495,825 over the weekend. This was reported by Evan Bland of the Omaha World-Herald. McConnaughey missed the entirety of 2024 after suffering an injury at the beginning of the season. With that being said, that doesn't diminish what he was able to do while with the Huskers. All told, he recorded a record of 10-4 while in Lincoln, tallying 110 strikeouts in 86.1 innings pitched. Now, he will look to join a Rangers ballclub that has several young arms on the staff. This could be a low-risk, high-reward signing for the Rangers, as McConnaughey can produce in a big way when healthy. It will certainly be interesting to see how he fares over the course of his career. He was one of the top pitchers on Nebraska's staff before his injuries, and he certainly has productive stuff. Nebraska baseball star announces return for senior season
Nebraska baseball shortstop Dylan Carey will stay at Nebraska for his senior season instead of pursuing other professional opportunities. This was reported by Evan Bland of the Omaha World-Herald on Thursday. Carey went undrafted in the MLB draft, but was one of the most consistent hitters for the program last season. He had a. 288 average, with eight home runs, and 41 RBIs in 62 games. He has played in 176 total games for Nebraska, and has a career .273 batting average with 19 home runs and 102 RBIs. Carey will help lead a team that is losing several key contributors for the 2026 season. The Huskers will still have several veteran players on the roster. Centerfielder Riley Silva and first baseman Casey Sanderson are among the players looking to make big strides next season. Having Carey back in the lineup should provide additional support for a team looking to make a jump in 2026. The honeymoon for Dolphins, Jalen Ramsey was long over before blockbuster Steelers trade
It did not end well for Jalen Ramsey and the Dolphins. The Sun-Sentinel reported that Miami was fed up with the veteran cornerback they traded to the Steelers last week after he became disruptive with the team and was hurting the culture the franchise was trying to build. AP Ramsey's attitude reportedly spread to other team members, causing countless problems last season. The issues played a big role in the team shipping the 30-year-old to Pittsburgh, along with star tight end Jonnu Smith, in exchange for Minkah Fitzpatrick. The trade not only rid the Dolphins of Ramsey but brought back Fitzpatrick, whom the franchise drafted No. 11 overall in 2018, to help solidify the secondary. The Steelers now have a veteran to pair with the younger cornerback Joey Porter Jr. and added another pass-catching tight end in Smith for Aaron Rodgers. Fitzpatrick returns to the Dolphins after being traded in 2023 due to the organization and the safety having different opinions on how he should be utilized on defense. Aside from Ramsey's rumored attitude issues, the trade also relieves the Dolphins of the massive contract they had given the seven-time Pro Bowler in 2024. 3 Minkah Fitzpatrick is headed back to the Dolphins in the trade. AP Ramsey is scheduled to make $26.6 million this year, which has mostly been taken off the Dolphins' books. The move comes with the pressure heating up on McDaniel, who missed the playoffs for the first time in three seasons as Dolphins coach in 2024. The Dolphins, who went 8-9 last season and have not won a playoff game since 2000, enter the season with plenty of questions. Starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has had multiple concussion issues, while star wide receiver Tyreek Hill has waffled on a trade demand as he seemingly grows frustrated with the franchise amid off-the-field issues. Hill's wife accused him of domestic violence and filed for divorce earlier this offseason.
