Swimming: World Championships open water events postponed again because of poor water quality - Omni sports

Al-Ahram Weekly2 days ago
Open water swimming at the World Championships in Singapore has been postponed again because of 'water quality levels exceeding acceptable thresholds,' the governing body World Aquatics said in a statement Tuesday.
World Aquatics and organizers said that while water quality results have improved, the women's and men's 10-kilometer events scheduled for Wednesday morning have now been pushed back to the afternoon.
The women's 10-kilometer event, which was to have opened the program Tuesday, had already been postponed to Wednesday to be held the same day as the men's 10-kilometer event.
World Aquatics said both events will only take place if 'acceptable test results' are returned Wednesday morning from samples collected on Tuesday afternoon.
Other open water events are scheduled for Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Open water swimming was an issue in last year's Olympics in Paris with concerns about water quality in the Seine River. It was also an issue at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 and the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
Water polo competition at the worlds is underway at an indoor venue.
The main even of the championships is eight days of swimming competition in the pool, which opens on July 27.

Rise in banning orders for football fans in England and Wales - World

There was a 12% rise in fans being banned from attending football matches in England and Wales last season, the U.K. government said on Thursday. Figures released by the Home Office showed 2,439 football banning orders (FBO) in effect up to June 1. A total of 685 new FBOs were issued last season. 'As part of our 'Plan for Change,' we are continuing to make football safer for the millions of dedicated fans, funding the U.K. football policing unit and expanding drug testing on arrest at football matches for certain offenses,' policing minister Diana Johnson said. The Home Office said there were 1,932 football-related arrests around regulated games in England and Wales, which was an 11% decrease on the previous campaign. Arsenal sign Liverpool's Smith in women's world record deal - World

Arsenal signed Canada forward Olivia Smith from Liverpool in a deal worth a reported women's world record fee of £1 million ($1.3 million) on Thursday. Smith has joined the Champions League holders on a lucrative four-year contract. The 20-year-old's transfer surpassed the previous women's record set when Chelsea signed Naomi Girma from San Diego Wave for £900,000 in January. "It's my dream to compete for the biggest titles here in England and in Europe and I'm excited to get started and contribute to doing that here with Arsenal," Smith said. Smith moved to Liverpool from Portugal's Sporting for just £200,000 in 2024, scoring seven goals in 20 Women's Super League games. Liverpool are understood to have accepted the record offer after rejecting several bids for Smith, who made her Canada debut aged 15 in 2019. Arsenal head coach Renee Slegers said: "Olivia is an exciting young player and we believe she can make a big contribution here at Arsenal. "We've been impressed by her mentality and character, excelling in two European leagues at such a young age." Ahly deny pursuing Mostafa Mohamed - Egyptian Football

Egyptian giants Ahly have denied reports linking the club with a move for Egypt international striker Mostafa Mohamed during the current transfer window. Sporting Director Mohamed Youssef dismissed claims of negotiations with the Nantes forward, saying there has been no contact between the club and the player or his representatives. 'I haven't met with Mostafa Mohamed or his agent since I assumed my position at Ahly, and I have never held talks with him,' Youssef told Ahly TV late Wednesday. 'There has been no communication whatsoever. Everything being said about this matter is incorrect,' he added. Youssef took over as sporting director in April 2025 and oversees key responsibilities related to Ahly's first team, including recruitment and transfers. Mohamed, 27, is under contract with Ligue 1 side Nantes until June 2027. He is currently participating in the club's pre-season camp and scored twice in a 2-0 friendly win over Stade Lavallois earlier this week. The former Zamalek striker was been linked with a move to Ahly to replace the departing Wessam Abou Ali who is trying to force his move away from the Cairo giants. Several Egyptian and French reports have claimed the talks between both sides over the past few weeks. Ahly, record CAF Champions League winners, are preparing for the upcoming 2025–26 season, aiming to bolster their squad after a busy summer window.
