Kelana Jaya line signalling upgrade: 10 LRT stations to open late on Aug 9-Sept 14 weekends

PETALING JAYA: Ten LRT stations between KLCC and Gombak will open at 9am on weekends beginning Aug 9 as Prasarana begins Phase 2 of its signalling system upgrade for the Kelana Jaya line.
The three-hour delayed opening every Saturday and Sunday will be until Sept 14.
Meanwhile, Phase 3 of the upgrade, scheduled from Oct 11 to Nov 22, will affect 17 stations between Lembah Subang and Ampang Park, including KL Sentral, Pasar Seni, Masjid Jamek and KLCC. This also applies only on weekends and selected public holidays.
Prasarana group chief operating officer (strategy and development) Dr Prodyut Dutt said the upgrade was to replace the Kelana Jaya line's original Automatic Train Control (ATC) system, which has been in use since 1998.
"We are upgrading the signalling software from version 2 to 8, and replacing obsolete hardware that's no longer supported by the manufacturer.
"This will significantly enhance safety, enable better train regulation and ensure reliable operations for the next 20 years," he said.
To ensure service continuity and minimise inconvenience, Prasarana is introducing a combination of shuttle trains, replacement buses and intermediate vans to support commuters affected by the delayed opening.
"A limited shuttle train will operate between Pasar Seni and Kampung Baru at 10- to 20-minute intervals," said Prasarana chief operating officer Nor Azmi Mohd Yusof.
During Phase 2, he said commuters travelling beyond Kampung Baru would be able to use two dedicated shuttle bus services.
Bus Route 2 will stop at all affected stations between Dang Wangi and Gombak, including KLCC, Ampang Park, Damai, Dato Keramat, Jelatek, Setiawangsa, Sri Rampai, Wangsa Maju, Taman Melati and Gombak.
"Meanwhile, Bus Route 3 will operate as a limited-stop service, halting only at Dang Wangi, KLCC, Ampang Park, Setiawangsa, Sri Rampai and Wangsa Maju. It's designed to offer a faster alternative for long-distance commuters," he added.
A fleet of five intermediate vans will also operate between Kampung Baru and KLCC to accommodate passengers needing last-mile transport to the city centre.
"These vans will run continuously from 6am to 9am and no prior booking is required," said Nor Azmi.
Prasarana estimates that 7,000 passengers will be affected during Phase 2, which involves 10 stations.
For Phase 3, the number of those affected is expected to rise to about 20,000 passengers.
The overall cost of the mid-life upgrade is RM150 million, covering the original Kelana Jaya line from Kelana Jaya to Gombak.
To prepare commuters for the phased closures, Prasarana has published flyers available at all stations and uploaded detailed information to its official online channels.
The National Transport Commission has approved the revised operating hours, which are intended to extend engineering access and speed up the work.
Commuters are encouraged to plan ahead, use the Pulse app to check for live updates and consider alternative arrangements when travelling during the affected weekends.

Efforts underway to make digital bus info more reliable

Prasarana introduced QR codes at bus stops for commuters to scan and access bus route information. — LEW GUAN XI/The Star VARIOUS efforts are underway to make digital bus information more reliable and accessible in Klang Valley, says Prasarana Malaysia Bhd. In a statement to StarMetro, the transportation operator said although printed bus information was previously displayed on information boards and selected bus stops, these materials became outdated quickly. It added that existing route information boards were installed by the Land Public Transport Commission, which was dissolved in 2018, during the Bus Network Revamp Project in 2016, and had not been updated since. 'To ensure passengers always receive the latest and most accurate information, we introduced a QR code system at bus stops. 'This enables commuters to conveniently access real-time, up-to-date information with a simple scan, eliminating the limitations of static print materials,' it said. On the issue of live tracking interruptions on the My Rapid Bus Kiosk website, Prasarana said they were mainly caused by signal weakness of the global positioning system (GPS), interruptions to mobile network and occasional system downtimes. 'To improve the website's reliability, we are conducting consistent GPS maintenance on buses as well as integrating with other platforms such as Google Maps and MyRapid Pulse app, with data being published on Malaysia's Open Data Portal ( 'We are also implementing upgrades to improve the website's stability and performance,' it said. It further stated that the MyRapid Pulse app was upgraded in November last year and now had a more user-friendly interface. 'Bus fares are now accessible through the Journey Planner feature, with fare details provided after route selection. 'We are also fine-tuning the app's performance to address lagging issues and enhance the accuracy of the buses' estimated time of arrival. 'We are also integrating data across more bus service operators, supporting a seamless and connected travel experience,' said Prasarana. It added that the app would continue evolving as a 'central hub' for public transport information, currently covering Rapid KL train and bus services, MRT feeder bus, KTM and ERL schedules for multimodal trip planning. 'Our roadmap includes expanding coverage to integrate data from all feasible bus service operators across the Klang Valley, providing commuters with real-time, accurate information across multiple providers in one platform,' it said. Prasarana said it recognised the needs of passengers who might not be tech-savvy, stating that they could seek assistance from Prasarana's on-site personnel and customer service channels. It added that it was collaborating with Housing and Local Government Ministry and local authorities to upgrade 344 uncovered bus stops, with 165 completed as of July. 'Priority is given to stops with high ridership and demand, ensuring resources are allocated where they deliver the greatest benefit. 'Developing covered stops requires significant resources and ridership data guides us in making effective, needs-based investments,' it said.

Penang on strong path to progress, firmly rooted in heritage

GEORGE TOWN: Penang is on the right track to becoming one of Malaysia's most advanced states, driven by its strengths in industry, investment and tourism, said Governor Tun Ramli Ngah Talib. In an exclusive interview with Bernama, Tun Ramli said Penang's strategic blend of modern infrastructure, rich historical heritage and cultural diversity continues to attract global investors and tourists, placing the state prominently on the Southeast Asian investment map. 'Penang has a heritage that cannot be replicated, a legacy shaped by locals and colonial influences. It's not just physical, but also traditional, which includes customs, food, and way of life, all in one rich mix,' he said. The interview was conducted recently at Seri Mutiara by Bernama editor-in-chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj and Penang bureau chief R. Ratcharathan. Tun Ramli noted that Penang's historical role as a trading port has been bolstered by modern infrastructure such as the Penang International Airport and an efficient road network, which continue to attract steady inflows of foreign investment. In the first quarter of 2025, Penang recorded RM6.7 billion in approved investments, 90 per cent of which were foreign direct investments (FDI), accounting for 22 per cent of Malaysia's total. He said the state's economy is expected to remain robust, driven by high-tech industries such as electronics, semiconductors and artificial intelligence (AI), supported by ongoing infrastructure upgrades by the state government. Among the key federal-led mega projects seen as future catalysts are the Penang Light Rail Transit (LRT) project and the Juru–Sungai Dua Elevated Expressway, which are expected to improve connectivity significantly, ease tourist access and strengthen investment support. On tourism, Tun Ramli highlighted that Penang's competitive edge lies not only in its scenic charm but in its heritage-based tourism, ranging from colonial architecture to deep-rooted customs and diverse culinary traditions reflecting the state's multiracial identity. 'Heritage here isn't just about buildings, it's a way of life. Like the Taj Mahal in India, which has drawn crowds for centuries, Penang's heritage continues to captivate people from all over. The interest keeps growing,' he said. The Penang International Airport recorded nearly 2 million passenger movements in the first quarter of 2025, a 69.55 per cent increase from the same period last year. International passenger numbers rose by over 80 per cent, while domestic passengers increased by more than 57 per cent. Tun Ramli also praised the state's racial harmony and the strong command of the Malay language among non-Malay communities, calling it a solid foundation for Penang's progress. 'Penang is well poised for the future. What matters now is that we preserve our heritage while continuing to strengthen development,' he said in closing. - Bernama
