Save hundreds on your holiday by changing this one setting when booking

British holidaymakers are being urged to make an important change to help save hundreds of pounds when booking a trip. According to experts, tracking software is helping travel companies predict where you're going to book and and are then upping the price as a result.
Ricardo Seixas, from One Day Agency, has told how travel companies now use AI-powered prediction tools that analyse past purchases, search history and social media activity to target customers with holiday ads that are more personalised than ever before.

He said: "What many don't realise is that cookies can track when someone is planning a holiday up to three months in advance. The algorithms pick up tiny digital breadcrumbs we leave online like increased searches for sun cream, flight prices, or swimwear."

However, Ricardo said they can even go one step further.
He added: "When you begin to search for specific flights or hotels on specific dates, you may notice that after some time, you'll need to refresh the searches and revisit the site, and when you do, suddenly the price has gone up.
"This is because of cookie tracking software, as well as more advanced AI software tools being able to detect consumer patterns and benefit the companies using them, by hiking the prices up once it detects that you're looking for a holiday at a specific destination or date.
The technology is similar to that of the dynamic pricing that caused outrage among Oasis fans who say the cost of tickets to their reunion tour skyrocket. Many other music lovers have had frustration with the scheme when getting concert tickets.
In recent years, holiday providers have put disclaimers on their sites, saying that prices may change at any time.

However, this change can happen quickly, from the first search you make, to the checkout, requiring you to refresh at the checkout point and be faced with a higher fee that you may feel committed to follow through with.
How to prevent automatic price hikes on holiday sites
The systems work by combining public data with private information users have allowed brands to access through their privacy settings, often without fully understanding what they've agreed to.
Ricardo added: "Most people tick consent boxes without reading them properly. They don't realise how much access they're giving to their personal information.

"However, it can be easy to avoid this targeted price hiking. When you go onto a new site, a pop-up will appear offering you cookie consent options.
"More often than not, many will just click accept, however, you should always click on 'Reject All' if that's available, or 'More Options' and turn off any possibility for targeted ads and cookie tracking.
I've already allowed cookies - what do I do now to avoid holiday price hikes?
If you have already allowed cookie tracking software from various sites, all you need to do is delete your cookies and the software.

Find the option to Delete All Browsing Data
Ensure that you select Delete All Cookies
In three simple steps, you've removed these from your browsing session and you can try and look for the same trip, without accepting the cookies once again, and potentially find that your overall total has dropped by hundreds.

The week after its Grok chatbot identified itself as 'MechaHitler' and generated antisemitic posts, Elon Musk's xAI firm announced a contract with the US Department of Defense worth nearly $200m. The deal is for developing and implementing artificial intelligence tools for the agency. The DoD on Monday also announced similar contracts with $200m ceilings with several other major US-based artificial intelligence developers, including Google, Anthropic and OpenAI. The agency is partnering with the General Services Administration to make these companies' AI tools available for use throughout the federal government. 'Leveraging commercially available solutions into an integrated capabilities approach will accelerate the use of advanced AI as part of our joint mission-essential tasks in our warfighting domain as well as intelligence, business, and enterprise information systems,' the US chief digital and AI officer Dr Doug Matty said in a statement. The contracts deepen the US military's ties with AI developers and are poised to expand the use of artificial intelligence within the US government after Musk's so-called 'department of government efficiency' (Doge) oversaw mass firings of workers throughout federal agencies. Until Musk's recent falling out with Donald Trump, the xAI founder was de facto leader of Doge as it gutted government agencies and in some cases pushed for departments to use the Grok chatbot. xAI's contract announcement comes after the company was forced to issue a public apology after Grok posted a string of responses on X last week that included promoting Nazi ideology and rape fantasies. The company claimed that it fixed the issue and subsequently unveiled its latest AI model with a $300 a month subscription for an advanced version of the tool. The DoD's contract will give xAI a boost of revenue as it seeks to compete with more established AI developers like OpenAI, which is led by Musk's former associate turned rival, Sam Altman. Musk has been heavily promoting xAI and attempting to use other parts of his tech empire to support its future, including having SpaceX invest $2bn into the startup, allowing it to acquire X, formerly, Twitter, and announcing on Sunday that Tesla shareholders will vote on their own investment in xAI. xAI announced the deal and the creation of what it calls 'Grok For Government' in a post on its website on Monday, detailing that in addition to its publicly available products it would create custom AI-powered applications for potential use in healthcare, national security and other public services. 'Under the umbrella of Grok For Government, we will be bringing all of our world-class AI tools to federal, local, state, and national security customers,' xAI said in a statement on its website. 'These customers will be able to use the Grok family of products to accelerate America – from making everyday government services faster and more efficient to using AI to address unsolved problems in fundamental science and technology.' Matthew Hall, 33, has not been seen since July 9, when he set off from his hotel in Chiavenna in the Alps to go for a hike. He was supposed to fly home on Saturday but is yet to make contact, leaving his loved ones at home living what they describe as a "nightmare". Attempts to get in touch with him have so far proved unsuccessful. Now, his friend has shared the final message he received from him before his disappearance - and it appears to suggest that he had taken a wrong turn during the hike. ‌ ‌ He wrote: "I lost the path and stopped to rest". The alarm was raised by hotel's owners after he did not collect his breakfast for several days, with them initially believing he was likely leaving for early morning hikes. When he failed to show up for check-out, the owners discovered his belongings were untouched, and his backpack was not in his room. ‌ Mum Sara Foster, 62, has been anxiously waiting at home for updates from the Italian authorities - says she has been 'blown sideways' by the support she has received from Matthew's friends and the wider public. A group of his pals have flown over to join the search teams, who have spent time analysing the last photo he sent to try and pin down its exact location. Matthew's employers, Quickline Communcations in Hull, are also sending six staff members out to join the mother, who works for elderly care firm Home Instead, said: 'I feel like I'm living someone else's nightmare but I've just been blown sideways by all of his friends. That's given us some hope – and he's fit, he's resourceful, so that's what's keeping me positive. "He's well travelled, and a solo traveller. He's a walker and has all the gear. We just need to find him and bring him home to safety." In an appeal published in Italian media, Matthew is described as approximately 178cm (5ft 8in) tall, of medium build, with brown hair. He had a black backpack, though it is not known what he was wearing on the day he disappeared. The 33-year-old had been staying at B&B Ploncher in Chiavenna, and police believe he may have travelled towards Savogno or Dasile from the village of Borgonuovo, or towards Pianazzola, Daloo, or Lagunch from the town he was staying in. A missing persons report has been filed in Italy, with the search involving the Carabinieri, the Guardia di Finanza, and the Alpine Rescue team. Anyone with any knowledge about his whereabouts is urged to come forward. A Foreign Office spokesperson told the Mirror: 'We are supporting the family of a British national missing in Italy.'
