What to do in London in August for interiors lovers

What to do in London in August for interiors lovers

Yahoo4 days ago
As the crowds clear off to Amalfi, Cornwall et al, London is buzzing with design events, making August the ideal month to explore small-scale exhibitions and meet the makers.
It's also a great time to hunt for unique pieces at summer brocantes — or enjoy a day trip taking in an art exhibition and a glass or two of wine.
Culture vultures
An interactive, hand-stitched fish and chip shop featuring more than 65,000 individually crafted felt pieces comes to the Lyndsey Ingram Gallery in Mayfair from August 1.
The Bourdon Street Chippy by Lucy Sparrow is a playful study in attention to detail, and is free to explore from Wednesday to Sunday, 11am to 6pm, until September 14 (lyndseyingram.com).
Ceramics aficionados should hop over the river to County Hall Pottery, where Heather Gibson presents Surfacing, the debut solo show from the gallery's first potter-in-residence, which runs from August 12 to September 7.
Developed on-site, the exhibition features hand-built, gas-reduced ceramic stoneware, including large sculptural pieces, vessels and wall-based artworks (countyhallpottery.com).
At Sarabande, the art foundation established by the late fashion designer Lee Alexander McQueen, the group summer show, Sincerely, is not to be missed.
Showcasing the works of two groups of 10 artists over six weeks, discover live and growing sculpture, experimental digital work, meticulously executed paintings and designs focused on intimate pleasure across the venue in Haggerston (sarabandefoundation.org).
Must visit
Up your work-from-home game with a visit to the new USM store in Marylebone (uk.usm.com). The Swiss manufacturer specialises in distinctive, oh-so clever modular furniture based on a chrome-plated steel-tube framework.
Minimalist and flexible, all the coolest workspaces have it — and the brand makes chic TV consoles and shoe cubbies too. This new, two-storey showroom will make you want to deck your home in all of its designs.
Day tripping
Tillingham winery in East Sussex stands for natural wine, delicious, seasonal food and stylish rooms. And now it has art in the mix, too as English-Italian artist Chiara Perano presents In Between Suns (tillingham.com).
Running until August 30, the exhibition is a collection of ethereal paintings drawing on the rhythms of the natural world.
On August 13, Perano herself will be hosting a Celestial Summer Art Workshop at the Dutch Barn overlooking the vines (£55pp including a glass of bubbles).
Book club
'I want to empower you with the confidence to tackle simple upholstery projects that breathe new life into your existing furniture,' writes Sonnaz Nooranvary of The Repair Shop fame, in her new book.
Upholstery School (£26, Kyle Books, out August 21) features 24 step-by-step projects to inspire the reader, including bolster cushions, lampshades and headboards.
On the theme of pre-loved furnishings, La Maison: Decorating with French Vintage Style (£30, Mitchell Beazley) is a love letter to all things vintage and antique.
Its author, the French interior designer Zoe de la Cases, shares her love for seeking out secondhand treasures and how to make your home truly unique— even if your kitchen is from Ikea.
Brocanting
The thrill of the find is on at the annual Country Brocante Summer Fair at Billingshurst (August 1 and 2, tickets from £11.55, thecountrybrocante.co.uk). Expect dozens of traders, expert talks and plenty of spots to refuel with something sweet (or boozy).
On August 16, the Cotswolds Vintage Fair (@cotswoldsvintagefair) is popping up at Bretforton Manor near Evesham, with more than 50 sellers in attendance.
Then, on August 25, the Walmer town council brocante (walmercouncil.co.uk) returns to the green just outside Deal. Entry is free.
To covet
Wiping the floor with all garden furniture is Buchanan Studio's new outdoor collection. The design firm's pillowy Studio Chair now comes adapted for garden life, complete with weatherproof fabrics and marine-grade timber frames.
Sell a kidney and build up a collection: the chair retails at £4,395, while the stool is a more reasonable £1,995 (buchanan.studio).

Dame Stella Rimington, the first female director general of MI5, has died

Dame Stella Rimington, who was the first female director general of MI5, has died, her family has announced. She died "surrounded by her beloved family and dogs and determinedly held on to the life she loved until her last breath". Dame Stella, who was also an author, was 90. She is widely credited as the inspiration for Dame Judi Dench's M in the James Bond films. Ms Rimington was appointed director general of MI5 in 1992, taking over the following year and holding the position until she retired from the service in 1996. As the first publicly-named "spymaster", she did much to bring the service out of the shadows and explain its role to the public, including releasing historical files to the National Archives. Her appointment - announced in a brief, two-line statement with no accompanying picture - caused a media sensation, not least because she was the first woman to head any of the agencies, for which she was ill-prepared. Born Stella Whitehouse in 1935 in South Norwood, south London, she attended Edinburgh University and married diplomat John Rimington in 1963. The couple moved to India two years later when he was posted to New Delhi, and soon after, she began her 29-year career in MI5. She worked in a variety of roles, "including counter-subversion and counter-terrorism", the agency said on its website. During her time as director general, "the service took on the lead role in the fight against Irish republican terrorism," it said. In 1993, MI5 published a short booklet which, for the first time, put some facts into the public domain, while she appeared alongside then home secretary Michael Howard in an official photocall to launch it. A further step towards greater openness followed when, despite much official hand-wringing, she was given permission to deliver the prestigious BBC Dimbleby lecture on the role of the security services in a democracy. She was made a dame in the 1996 New Year's Honours list. Five years after retiring, to the fury of many of her former colleagues, her autobiography, Open Secret, was published. She later wrote a number of novels set in the world of intelligence and counter-terrorism. This breaking news story is being updated and more details will be published shortly. Prince Andrew and Ex-Wife Sarah Ferguson Spotted for First Time Since Bombshell Book Claims

The former couple were seen driving near Windsor Castle just days after shocking claims about Andrew emerged in a new royal biographyNEED TO KNOW Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson were seen together at Windsor just days after explosive allegations surfaced in a new royal biography Entitled: The Rise and Fall of the House of York by Andrew Lownie claims Andrew once got into a physical altercation with Prince Harry A spokesperson for Prince Harry has denied the allegations and confirmed legal action is underway over 'damaging and defamatory' remarksPrince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson have been photographed for the first time since explosive allegations about the Duke of York emerged in a new royal biography. On Aug. 3, the former couple, both 65, were seen driving near their longtime home at Royal Lodge in Windsor, appearing pensive and somber. Andrew was behind the wheel with Fergie, as the Duchess of York is affectionately known, seated beside him as they headed toward nearby Windsor Castle for a walk. The former couple, who share daughters Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, divorced in 1996 after a decade of marriage, but remain close. The outing comes just days after the Daily Mail published excerpts from Entitled: The Rise and Fall of the House of York by author Andrew Lownie. The bombshell biography paints a deeply unflattering portrait of Andrew — alleging everything from a violent altercation with Prince Harry to lurid behavior involving convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Among the most headline-making claims: the book alleges that Prince Andrew, 65, and Prince Harry, now 40, got into a heated argument at a family gathering in 2013 that escalated into a physical fight, leaving Andrew with a bloody nose. The excerpt also alleges that Andrew later insulted Meghan Markle behind the scenes, calling her an 'opportunist' and casting doubt on the longevity of the couple's marriage. In response, Prince Harry's spokesperson firmly denied both allegations. "I can confirm neither of those things are true. Prince Harry and Prince Andrew have never had a physical fight, nor did Prince Andrew ever make those comments about the Duchess of Sussex to Prince Harry," the spokesperson told PEOPLE. The Duke of Sussex's team added that legal action is underway "Such are the gross inaccuracies, damaging and defamatory remarks made in the Daily Mail's story, I can confirm a legal letter from Prince Harry's counsel has been sent to the Mail," the spokesperson said. PEOPLE has reached out to Buckingham Palace for comment. According to the excerpt, a "heated argument" between Prince Harry and Prince Andrew erupted at a family event in 2013 over "something Andrew said behind Harry's back." The tensions reportedly escalated to the point where 'punches were thrown' and Andrew sustained a bloody nose before the brawl was broken up. In another allegation, Entitled also alleges that Prince Andrew later questioned his nephew's relationship with Meghan, describing her as an "opportunist" and saying the marriage wouldn't last. Entitled: The Rise and Fall of the House of York will be published on Aug. 14. A summary of the text said the book "exposes the secrets and scandals behind their extravagant lives and troubled marriage," chronicling his fall from grace in light of his ties to Jeffrey Epstein. King Charles' younger brother took a seismic step back from working royal duties in November 2019 following a scrutinized interview with BBC's Newsnight about his alleged ties to the late convicted sex offender. In January 2022, the transition was made official when Queen Elizabeth stripped Prince Andrew of his military titles and patronages after he attempted to have Virginia Giuffre's sexual assault lawsuit against him dismissed. The Duke of York has denied any wrongdoing and in February 2022, settled with Giuffre out of court for an undisclosed sum. The Duchess of York has stood by her ex-husband's side through the turmoil and the former couple joined King Charles and other royal family members for church on Easter in April. ABBA Sees A Trio Of Career-Defining Hit Songs Return Together

ABBA is back on the Official Physical Singles chart this week with several classic tunes, showing that decades after first becoming superstars, the Swedish pop musicians still sell in impressive numbers. Three of the quartet's most beloved singles return to the tally, which ranks the top-selling cuts on any physical format – and as they rebound, British citizens once again show their love for the once-maligned outfit. 'SOS,' 'So Long,' and 'Mamma Mia' Return Three ABBA favorites — 'SOS,' 'So Long,' and 'Mamma Mia' — all find space on the Official Physical Singles chart this frame. 'SOS' leads the pack at No. 57, followed by 'So Long' at No. 81 and 'Mamma Mia' just behind that latter cut at No. 82. Each one of those tunes has only been away for a less than a month. All Three Have Hit the Top 10 Before While their current positions are fairly modest, each ABBA's returning cuts has previously broken into the Official Physical Singles chart's top 10, though they stalled in different spots. 'So Long' once climbed to No. 3, 'SOS' peaked at No. 5, and 'Mamma Mia' reached No. 4. Coincidentally, all three have now spent exactly four weeks on this ranking, even though they've stepped away in the past. Four ABBA Singles Debuted in June All three ABBA tracks that currently appear on the Official Physical Singles tally originally debuted back in June. At the same time, the Grammy-nominated group also launched 'I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do' inside the top 10, though that single does not reappear on the roster this time. Gold Still Performing Well Across Multiple Rankings ABBA's singles success pairs well with continued power on the albums tallies in the U.K. The group's Gold – Greatest Hits compilation holds at No. 21 on the Official Albums chart, where it has now spent more than 1,200 weeks. It also sits inside the top 40 on both the streaming and downloads rankings. The band even manages to fill two spaces on the Official Album Downloads chart with different versions of Gold.
