Case against ‘abusive' guardians stalls as victim is transported to Zimbabwe

The Citizen24-06-2025
A child abuse case has stalled after the alleged perpetrators, the guardians of a Grade 5 learner from Skeen Primary School, reportedly took her to Zimbabwe, leaving police struggling to gather evidence.

The family violence, child protection, and sexual offenses commander confirmed that the child was taken out of South Africa before critical evidence could be obtained. 'The learner's statement was not yet obtained and she had not been taken to a doctor. The learner must be taken to the doctor to prove the case.'
The investigating officer said he suspects the accused guardians took the child to Zimbabwe to 'kill the case'. This was corroborated by Skeen Primary School deputy principal Masilo Lebeya, who revealed that the guardians took the child away swiftly, in the wake of allegations of abuse, and ahead of her June examinations, without informing the school. 'We only learned of her whereabouts when a social worker contacted one of the suspects, who admitted taking her to Zimbabwe,' Lebeya said, adding that the school subsequently opened a case of abuse at the Sandringham Police Station.
When asked if there were early, telltale signs that the victim was being abused, Lebeya said they were only seen at a later stage, and that the process of counselling the victim was only initiated when they confirmed that she had a family problem. 'Remember, we are dealing with a lot of children here. You might find that, by the time a teacher notices that she needs to intervene, it is a bit late. It shows that the child has been suffering in silence,' he noted, further emphasising that the school has a strong support system and they have always encouraged children to share their problems.
Matheba said they are trying to get the accused guardians to co-operate. He stressed that, without it, the police will not be able to build a case. Matheba said if they do not co-operate, the police will have to work with home affairs' immigration authorities to verify the victim's legal status in South Africa. 'If she was here illegally, then we would have to involve authorities on that side, to get her a passport so that she can be transported back to South Africa, and that will be a long process.'

Gayton McKenzie suspends Kenny Kunene: 'Hardest letter I've ever written'

Patriotic Alliance (PA) president Gayton McKenzie has officially suspended the party's deputy president, Kenny Kunene, amid mounting controversy surrounding his alleged association with accused murder syndicate kingpin, Katiso Molefe. The suspension was confirmed in a statement issued by McKenzie, who stressed the importance of transparency, internal accountability, and public trust. 'Until such time as he is fully cleared, [Kunene] will not act or work in any official capacity within the Patriotic Alliance,' said Gayton McKenzie. He added that Kunene had agreed to cooperate with a formal investigation led by an independent legal team. The process, according to McKenzie, is already underway, with appointments of investigators being finalised. Kunene's suspension follows his public admission that he was present at Molefe's Sandton home at the time of the alleged crime figure's dramatic arrest. Molefe is accused of orchestrating the 2022 assassination of popular musician DJ Sumbody. Although Kunene insists he has no personal relationship with Molefe – claiming he was merely accompanying a journalist for an exclusive interview – the association drew widespread public criticism and placed pressure on the PA to act. In addition to being suspended from party duties, Kunene has stepped down as a Proportional Representation Councillor and as the Mayoral Committee Member for Transport in the City of Johannesburg. 'I have decided to step aside from public life while the party satisfies itself regarding the allegations raised against me,' Kunene wrote in his resignation letter, adding that he views the claims as 'unfounded.' Gayton McKenzie's swift action is seen as an attempt to protect the PA's public image, particularly as the party continues to build influence in local municipalities. He called on party supporters to 'remain steadfast' during this 'challenging period.' Political analysts note that the move marks a test of McKenzie's leadership and the PA's commitment to clean governance as it positions itself as a growing force in South African politics. The outcome of the internal investigation will likely determine whether Kunene makes a political comeback – or whether this suspension marks the end of his political career. Geyser sparks ceiling fire: Quick-thinking Empangeni neighbours save family

An Empangeni family had a close call with a house fire last weekend, which was quickly contained with help from their neighbours. According to the Zululand Observer, Phakamani Mabaso (53) recalled that his family was alerted to something burning at around 20:30 last Saturday. His wife, Ziphozethu Mabaso (50), smelt something burning but couldn't find what it was. '…but we couldn't see it. We switched off the lights. There was no flame, then suddenly there were flames coming from the ceiling,' said Phakamani. 'We threw a bucket and another one. We screamed for help and the neighbours came. They responded very fast,' he said. 'Without them…,' said Ziphozethu, who trailed off, with her young daughter Sethu (9) standing close beside her. 'Fortunately we were not sleeping. I don't even want to think about it.' Next-door neighbour Johan Horn was relaxing at home with his family, playing cards, when he heard Sethu's call for help. 'I heard a small child shout, 'Please help us!' So I ran to the stoep assuming someone was attacking them, but their house was on fire.' He jumped over the wall and discovered their geyser had burst, leaking onto electrical wires. 'I told them the first thing was to switch off their power. The family was frantic and rushing left to right. Phakamani told me afterwards that he's so glad someone came to keep him level-headed.' Johan's brother Ferdinand and nephew Juan de Kock also rushed to help. Johan tried to use a hosepipe, but the water was just trickling. 'Someone gave me a full bottle of water and I was standing in the dining room, just throwing. It doused 80% of the fire.' The Empangeni Fire Department arrived shortly after the blaze was contained and assessed that there was no further risk. However, the miracle of the story is that the neighbours weren't even meant to be home. Ferdinand was visiting from France and Juan was visiting from Johannesburg. 'We were supposed to be on a church camp this weekend, but everything was blocking us to go – we think this was the reason.' Phakamani said: 'We are grateful to our neighbours, we really appreciate their help.' In case of fire emergencies, contact the Empangeni Fire Department on 035 907 5723.
