India in touch with China over rare earth supply chain issues
New Delhi [India], June 26 (ANI): The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said that India is in touch with China on several economic and trade issues, including the supply chain issue of rare earth materials.
Addressing a weekly briefing on Thursday, Jaiswal said, 'On trade issues on rare earth, yes, we have been in touch with the Chinese side, both in Delhi and also in Beijing, and we have been talking to them as to how we can streamline the supply chain issue on rare earths.'
'We are in touch with the Chinese side on several economic and trade issues, as and when anything is required,' he added.
Meanwhile, commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal on Monday highlighted India's engaged with China both commercially and diplomatically on the issue of rare earth minerals supply and is making all efforts to ensure essential imports.
The commerce secretary noted that the government is also in touch with industry organisations like SIAM and ACMA for impact on the auto sector
'We're engaged with SIAM and ACMA, facilitating them to have discussions with Chinese counterparts,' the commerce secretary said.
He noted that China's rare earth move was a global response, and not just against India.
Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal recently described China's rare earth export restrictions as a global 'wake-up call,' emphasising that India is actively building alternative supply chains while positioning itself as a trusted partner for international businesses seeking to reduce their dependence on Chinese suppliers.
China's overwhelming control of global rare earth processing - commanding over 90 per cent of the world's magnet production capacity--has created significant vulnerabilities for industries worldwide. These materials are critical across multiple sectors, including automobiles, home appliances, and clean energy systems.
Beyond China, there are only a few alternative suppliers.
The new Chinese restrictions, effective from April 4, require special export licenses for certain specific rare earth elements and their related magnetic products.
Separately, India and Central Asian countries -- Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and, Uzbekistan -- have recently expressed interest in joint exploration of rare earth and critical minerals at the recently held India-Central Asia Dialogue.
Rare earth magnets, low in cost but critical in function, could emerge as a key supply-side risk for India's automotive sector if China's export restrictions and delays in shipment clearances persist, according to a report by Crisil Ratings last week.
The rating agency said this week that a disruption lasting more than a month can already impact electric vehicle (EV) launches, affect production, and weigh on the sector's growth momentum.
Rare earth magnets are integral to permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) used in EVs for their high torque, energy efficiency and compact size. Hybrids also depend on them for efficient propulsion. (ANI)

ICRA flags softening PV demand, trims FY26 growth outlook amid EV supply concerns
ICRA has revised its wholesale growth estimate for the PV industry for FY2026 to 1–4 per cent, a sharp revision from its previous estimate of 4–7 per cent. (PTI) Notify me Credit rating agency ICRA has presented a dualistic picture for India's auto sector, marking contrasting trends in the passenger vehicle (PV) and two-wheeler markets for May 2025. While geopolitical concerns and supply chain issues have sapped PV demand, ICRA is cautiously optimistic about the overall market trend, backed by solid rural demand and consistent new model offerings. Passenger vehicle growth outlook ICRA has revised its wholesale growth estimate for the PV industry for FY2026 to 1–4 per cent, a sharp revision from its previous estimate of 4–7 per cent. This downgrade follows as the sector is hit by heightened inventories and manufacturing issues—particularly in the electric vehicle (EV) segment—owing to shortages of rare earth magnets due to export restrictions by China. Also Read : Passenger vehicles stable in May 2025, SIAM reports 2.2% growth in two-wheelers In spite of these drawbacks, wholesale volumes for PVs continued at 3.4 lakh units in May 2025. ICRA opines that the new model launches from OEMs will provide a cushion against muted retail action and assist in sustaining market momentum during the year. Consumer sentiment dips The May PV wholesale sales decline of 13.6 per cent year over year compared to April was primarily on account of deteriorating consumer sentiment due to escalating geopolitical tensions in north India. Nonetheless, ICRA draws attention to the fact that the decline needs to be seen in perspective, considering SUVs and UVs continue to attract robust buyer demand, accounting for 64–65 per cent of overall PV sales. This consistent preference confirms the segment's long-term popularity and resilience. ICRA also identifies strong PV export growth—up 24 per cent year-on-year—as a silver lining. While forex deficiencies in a few African markets and global inflation may cap further upside, India's leading exporters such as Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai remain strong drivers of overseas demand. Two-wheelers offer stability and rural strength The two-wheeler industry, led by rural and semi-urban demand, promises a more optimistic picture. While May's wholesale volumes were flat at 1.58 million units on account of carryovers from April's shutdowns, retail sales grew by 7 per cent year-on-year during the month. The healthy Rabi harvest, good wedding season, and good rural incomes contributed to this growth. Also Read : Shortage of rare earth magnets can decelerate India's automotive ride: Crisil Electric two-wheelers (e2Ws) also saw a positive 9 per cent sequential volume growth, at 100,266 units. In the outlook, ICRA expects wholesale volume growth of 6–9% in the two-wheeler segment in FY2026, assuming good monsoon forecasts and a continued recovery in urban markets. Overall industry outlook As short-term issues such as geopolitical uncertainty and supply chain delays weigh on the automobile sector, ICRA research suggests that longer-term structural demand forces - such as rural resilience, a strong demand for SUVs and new product launches - could help stabilize the market. ICRA views the situation in a cautiously positive light: the sector is challenged by headwinds but no shortage of positive rejuvenating levers. Macroeconomic data, US tariff news likely to drive markets this week
Stock market investors would track macroeconomic data announcements such as industrial production, US tariff related developments and other global trends this week, which may influence sentiment, analysts said. Trading activity of foreign investors and crude oil prices would also remain in the limelight during the week, experts noted. "This week brings a series of important economic data releases from India and the United States, which are likely to influence market sentiment and central bank outlooks. In India, the week begins on June 30 with the release of Industrial Production (YoY) for May. "On July 1, attention will turn to the manufacturing PMI for June, which reflects the health of India's industrial sector and order inflows. This will be followed by the services PMI on July 3," according to Bajaj Broking Research. Tesla CEO Elon Musk calls Trump's Big, Beautiful Bill a threat to America's future: ‘Will destroy millions of…'
Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has once again criticised the latest draft of the U.S. Senate's tax and spending bill, warning it could cause serious harm to the country. As senators prepare for a crucial vote on the legislation, Musk took to microblogging platform X (formerly Twitter) to voice his disapproval. 'The latest Senate draft bill will destroy millions of jobs in America and cause immense strategic harm to our country!' Musk wrote in the post. He further added 'Utterly insane and destructive. It gives handouts to industries of the past while severely damaging industries of the future'. Musk's remarks come in response to a post by Jesse D. Jenkins, a Macro-energy systems engineering, optimization, and policy professor at Princeton Engineering. Jenkins wrote in the post: 'The new Senate draft raises taxes on all wind and solar projects that haven't begun construction today unless they are placed service by end of 2027 and navigate complex, likely unworkable requirements to prove they don't use a drop of Chinese materials. After that, this bill ADDS A NEW tax on wind and solar projects that can't prove the same.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Woman Discovers Buried Bunker in Her Garden, Then Sees the Reason Crowdy Fan Undo What is Trump administration's Big, Beautiful Bill The bill—nicknamed the 'Big, Beautiful Bill'—has been a central part of U.S. President Donald Trump's economic agenda and includes tax cuts, reduced funding for social programs like Medicaid and food stamps, and increased spending on deportations and national defense. The 940-page bill represents one of Trump's most ambitious efforts to reshape government spending and taxation. Democrats have strongly opposed the measure, calling it unfair and harmful to vulnerable Americans. Trump has urged Republican lawmakers to pass the bill before the July 4 Independence Day. While Republicans hold the majority in both the House and Senate, the bill has sparked divisions within the party. Some GOP members are concerned about the deep cuts to popular welfare programs. Senators are expected to work through the weekend to push the bill through and send it back to the House for a final vote. Not a first when Musk criticized the bill Notably, this is not the first that the tech billionaire has publicly spoken against the bill. In a CBS interview earlier this year, Musk said that he 'was disappointed to see the massive spending bill, which increases the budget deficit, not just decrease it, and undermines the work that the DOGE team is doing.' Musk's latest criticism comes just weeks after he publicly clashed with President Trump over the same bill. The two have since reconciled, but Musk's fresh comments show the debate is far from over.
