'Do you want to die?' 16-year-old charged as adult in Beech Grove shooting of teen girl

A 15-year-old who was arrested last year for the shooting death of a teenage Beech Grove girl is now being charged as an adult in her killing. Emanuel Carter, who is now 16, is accused of killing Makayla Bauman, 18, and court documents reveal it was over a robbery gone wrong.
He was charged by the Marion County Prosecutor's Office with murder, robbery resulting in serious bodily injury, and dangerous possession of a firearm where a child possesses a firearm.
"She was killed on Sunday, and they made an arrest on Monday," her mother, Jennifer Bauman, told IndyStar. "He's only just now being charged as an adult." The family did not want to release a statement on the arrest since the investigation is ongoing.
At 9:02 p.m., on Sept. 29, 2024, Beech Grove Police were alerted to possible shots fired via gunshot detection devices in the Park View at Beech Grove apartments area. As officers were heading to the scene, dispatch updated the run to a person shot at a home in the 5900 block of Riva Ridge Drive, less than a mile and a half away.
Police found Makayla Bauman shot, and her 15-year-old brother was tending to her wound.
She was taken to Eskenazi Hospital in critical condition, but later died.
An autopsy for the 18-year-old revealed that she had been struck by a single bullet in the right chest, with the bullet becoming lodged in the left shoulder. This is consistent with a person being shot through the passenger side door while seated in a vehicle.
'You couldn't ask for a better kid.' 18-year-old shot and killed in Beech Grove
Investigators found five shell casings under a carport in the parking lot of the complex within the 5400 block of Fetterbush Lane and determined they came from two different firearms.
According to court documents, Bauman's brother told detectives that his sister drove to Fetterbush Lane, where he was going to sell marijuana to a person he knew as "Man Man," later identified as Carter. The deal was arranged through Snapchat.
Bauman's brother was in the driver's side of his sister's car while she was in the passenger side when Carter and another person approached the vehicle, according to a probable cause for his arrest. Bauman's brother told detectives he was handing over the drugs when Carter and the other person pulled out guns and pointed them at his head.
'Give me everything. Do you want to die?' Carter told Bauman's brother, according to court records. Bauman's brother put the vehicle in reverse in an attempt to flee before both suspects began shooting at the vehicle.
He was driving out of the apartment complex when Makayla Bauman stated, 'I think I just got shot.'
He noticed his sister then began 'fading out." While trying to drive home, he called their mother to tell her what happened, but eventually stopped the car before being found by officers.
Bauman's brother told detectives he and Carter were classmates at Beech Grove High School during their freshman year in 2023. He didn't get a good look at the other person, but believed the boy to be Carter's brother.
Detectives located Carter and his brother, who told investigators they were staying overnight at a friend's house at Park View Apartments.
An Instagram message tied to Carter's account and obtained by police indicates the teen was setting up and planning to rob Bauman's brother. During interrogation, Carter's brother said he was also at the shooting and pulled the trigger because he thought they were the ones being robbed.
Beech Grove Police have not announced any other arrests in the case.
At an initial hearing on July 2, Carter pleaded not guilty. His jury trial is set for Sept. 29.

Father, son skipping Indy a year after 11-year-old hit by bullet shot in air Fourth of July

He was the city's youngest shooting victim for the Fourth of July holiday in 2024. The 11-year-old was struck in the back by a stray bullet that came from being shot in the air while visiting family in Indianapolis. A year later, Jataevious Ragsdale is thriving, but his father told IndyStar that they're not coming back to Indianapolis this year for the holiday. "It can happen to anybody. It is really dangerous to fire guns into the air because those bullets are coming back down," Ragsdale told IndyStar. "I was standing right in front of him, and it could have hit any one of us the wrong way." Ragsdale said his son was lucky because the bullet went right under his skin. They traveled back to Mississippi after spending time at Riley Children's following the shooting, and two weeks later, the father took Jataevious to their local Children's Hospital in Jackson, where the bullet was removed. 'Stop shooting!' 11-year-old boy injured by bullet shot into air Fourth of July Recovery was easy, but knowing that things could have been worse has been hard. "I come to Indianapolis every other year to visit my family 'cause that's where I'm from," Ragsdale said. "We're going to do something else this year, but I don't want people to think that this is OK. Don't shoot guns, period, and don't shoot them up in the air." Jataevious was 1 of 8 people shot on July 4, 2024, prompting Indianapolis Metropolitan Police to address the string of violence a day later. Now, coming off the heels of a violent weekend, where seven people were killed and nine more were shot from Friday to Sunday, public safety officials don't want the upcoming 2025 holiday weekend to be what it was a year ago. 4th of July last year: Indianapolis has violent Fourth of July night. Police use curfew to bust up groups downtown There were at least 10 shots-fired calls that police responded to on Independence Day last year. One woman found a bullet in the side of her home. Those calls, coupled with eight people being shot, made for nearly 20 calls tied to gunfire in one night. It's what we hear from police this time of year — what goes up must come down. On July 1, 2025, ahead of the holiday weekend, city officials laid out their public safety plans for the fireworks display downtown. IMPD Deputy Chief of Operations Tanya Terry also addressed the recent string of homicides, arrests, and shootings with a warning to those who perpetrate violence. "It's illegal to shoot your firearms in the air," Terry said. "Don't do it. I appreciate everybody's right to bear arms, but let's just put the guns down." Arthur Ragsdale said his son is now in 7th grade and into basketball. While he's been worried as a father, he's happy the shooting doesn't seem to have a lasting negative psychological impact on Jataevious. "You'd think he might be scared on the Fourth when he lights fireworks, but he's not even thinking about it," Arthur Ragsdale said. "Last year, in the hospital, I remember he called one of his friends in Mississippi and was saying, 'Dad! Tell him I got shot in the back, he doesn't believe me.' I'm like, 'boy, go sit down,' but he was so blessed."

Mitchell man sentenced to probation in fourth-degree rape case

Jul. 2—MITCHELL — A 21-year-old Mitchell man was sentenced on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, in Davison County Felony Court after pleading guilty to fourth-degree rape. Azriel Fallis received three years of probation and a $500 fine. During sentencing, Judge Giles explained that he considered both the consensual nature of the relationship and the fact that the victim had lied about her age. The case began with a police investigation into a domestic altercation on Nov. 12, 2024. Court documents show the victim was between 13 and 16 years old at the time. Fallis admitted to living with the minor and having sexual intercourse with her multiple times in the week leading up to the investigation. Despite previous warnings about the age difference, Fallis claimed the minor initiated contact via Snapchat. Evidence from his phone included photos and videos of the two kissing and messages referencing affection and sexual activity. Initially pleading not guilty in December 2024, Fallis changed his plea to guilty on March 11, 2025.

Man hid cameras at home and shared nude videos of female roommate, FL cops say

A woman found out her boyfriend used hidden cameras stashed in their home to take years worth of nude photos and videos of their female roommate and share them with others, Florida authorities said. David Van Moorsel, a 28-year-old personal trainer, is now facing over 100 felony charges, including 40 counts of digital voyeurism, 40 counts of unlawful use of a two-way communication device and 30 counts of possession of child pornography, the Volusia Sheriff's Office announced July 2. The investigation began when Van Moorsel's then-girlfriend started to suspect he was cheating on her and went through his phone, deputies with the Volusia Sheriff's Office wrote in an arrest affidavit. She came across 'compromising' images and videos of their female roommate — her best friend — as well as a wireless camera in the bathroom, according to deputies. She confronted him, but he told her he was being blackmailed and said he would delete all the images, deputies said. She didn't take action at that point, but about seven months later, she became suspicious again and logged into his account on the messaging application Telegram, where she discovered he had been sending videos of her best friend in the shower, according to deputies. She broke up with him, and when she went searching for proof he was still recording their roommate, she found a hidden camera on a bookshelf in the roommate's bedroom, deputies said. According to investigators, Van Moorsel took over 109 videos of the woman over the course of two years and shared content of her on Snapchat and Telegram, including videos of him sexually assaulting her in her sleep, deputies said. Some of these sex offenses occurred in Santa Rosa County, a detective said. When investigators searched his devices, they said they also found 'extensive amounts' of child pornography. Van Moorsel, who worked as a personal trainer at Gold's Gym in Daytona Beach, took videos of women exercising there, but he did so in public spaces and therefore didn't violate any laws, deputies said. Law enforcement went to speak to him at work and arrested him. 'Gold's Gym Daytona Beach is a local, family owned-and operated business, and after learning of the shocking charges against trainer David Lee Van Moorsel, we immediately terminated his employment and alerted security that he is banned from our property,' the gym said in a statement shared with McClatchy News. 'While his alleged illegal actions do not involve the gym or our members, they go against our most deeply held values as longstanding members of the Daytona Beach community,' Gold's Gym said. According to the sheriff's office, Van Moorsel was previously convicted of sexual assault against a 13-year-old girl in Montana. He told deputies he had to take the videos of his roommate because someone online was threatening to expose his criminal history to her and his girlfriend, according to the arrest affidavit.
