Top drug lord and Assad cousin arrested in Damascus sting operation

Al Bawaba21-06-2025
ALBAWABA - An official statement made Saturday says that Wasim al-Assad, a cousin of the former President Bashar al-Assad, was arrested by Syrian intelligence forces working with the Ministry of Interior in what was called a "tightly planned ambush." The Ministry said that al-Assad was captured as part of a larger effort to bring justice to the people of Syria and break up criminal networks that were still active during the Assad era. Al-Assad was long thought to be one of the country's most notorious drug traffickers and a key figure in a number of serious crimes that happened while the regime was in power.
Al-Assad was being watched closely by the rest of the world. In 2023, both the U.S. Treasury and the European Union put sanctions on him because he was part of a large-scale drug dealing network in the area that helped pay for the former government.
In addition to his work in the drug trade, Wasim al-Assad was in charge of a militia group in the coastal city of Latakia. This group was accused of many crimes against citizens, such as putting down large protests in the early years of the Syrian uprising.
In the days before the government fell on December 8, 2024, al-Assad wrote on Facebook that armed support units would be formed in Latakia and the nearby areas to help the military. This showed how actively he was involved in helping the regime in its last days.
After Bashar al-Assad's government fell, the Syrian government began a national crackdown on people they thought were guilty of war crimes, corruption, and power abuses. People think that the arrest of Wasim al-Assad was a big step forward in that effort.

Gaza raid a mysterious message: Al-Qassam targets Israeli forces in bold attack

Published July 5th, 2025 - 10:14 GMT ALBAWABA - Hamas's military wing, the Al-Qassam Brigades, said on Saturday that its fighters had attacked Israeli forces successfully in downtown Khan Younis, killing at least one person. The operation comes at a time when fighting has gotten worse and diplomatic efforts to reach a ceasefire deal are picking up speed again. Also Read Israeli soldiers killing each other amid heavy censorship in Gaza Al-Qassam said in a Telegram message that the fighters attacked Israeli troops and armored trucks on Friday morning near the Directorate of Education in Khan Younis. The group said they destroyed an armored personnel carrier (APC) by planting a "Shuwadh" explosive device in the command cabin of the vehicle. They said the blast fully destroyed the vehicle and its crew. The group also said that its fighters fired a "Yasin 105" anti-tank rocket at the APC and then used light and medium weapons to attack the rescue workers as they arrived. Similar bombs were also aimed at two Merkava tanks, and Al-Qassam said that some of their crew members were killed. Al-Qassam said that Israeli planes took a long time to evacuate people after the attack. The Israeli military has not yet made a formal comment about what happened. The action happens at a time when resistance activity in the Gaza Strip is growing and peace talks are expected to happen soon. Before Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's planned trip to Washington, D.C. on Monday, Hamas recently sent an answer to mediators that was described as "positive." — AHMAD SLMAN (@ahmadslmanx) June 28, 2025 They said on Friday that two soldiers were killed in different incidents in Khan Younis and Beit Hanoun. In the past few days, attacks on Israeli troops and military infrastructure have been recorded by both Al-Qassam and Islamic Jihad's Al-Quds Brigades. According to the Israeli military, 883 soldiers have died since the war on Gaza began on October 7, 2023. Of these, 439 were killed during operations on the ground that began on October 27. There are now 6,032 people who have been hurt, including 2,745 people who were hurt during the ground attack in Gaza. Observers and rights groups keep pointing out that Israel has tight control over information about the war. They say that the military stops the media from reporting on Israel's loses, limits access to photos and videos, and only lets official information be shared through heavily watched channels. © 2000 - 2025 Al Bawaba (

Not just Gaza: Netanyahu-Trump meeting set to impact the ntire Middle East

ALBAWABA - As U.S. President Donald Trump gets ready to welcome Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to the White House on Monday, the Middle East is preparing for what officials are describing as a potentially historic statement. According to Israeli sources, the two presidents might announce a truce in Gaza in addition to more extensive regional agreements involving nearby Arab nations. The Washington Post reports that Israeli Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon called the meeting "extremely significant," highlighting its strategic importance for Gaza and the region at large. Danon emphasized that the proposed truce "is not a commitment to end the war," but Israeli authorities highlighted that it would enable flexibility to resume operations if necessary. The anticipated declaration is interpreted as a component of President Trump's redoubled efforts to achieve a significant diplomatic triumph in the Middle East. Alongside the ceasefire in Gaza, normalization agreements with Israel's neighbors are apparently being worked on. Significantly, Israel and Syria have discussed a peace agreement that Damascus calls a "non-aggression pact." Two major proposals are being considered to settle the Golan Heights dispute, which is the main barrier to a formal agreement, according to the Israeli channel iNews24. In one possibility, Syria would regain a third of the key plateau, Israel would keep a third, and the other portion would be leased for 25 years. According to the second scenario, Syria would either regain or lease the remaining one-third of the land, with Israel holding the other two-thirds. In the meantime, the US is putting pressure on Lebanon to think about signing a peace deal with Israel. Following the recent fighting, which made Hezbollah's hold weaker, the initiative gained momentum. Disarming the organization and giving the Lebanese army complete command of the entire nation, however, are still prerequisites for advancement. Redrawing borders and Israeli disengagement from southern lands would be part of the agreement, if it were accepted. Following U.S. raids on Iranian nuclear sites and a mediated ceasefire between Israel and Iran, Trump met with Netanyahu. Though divisive among some of Trump's base who oppose new military interventions, the U.S. President remains confident a broader agreement is within reach. Fresh off the Iran campaign, Netanyahu and Trump aim to lock in gains with a Gaza deal, new regional alliances, and legacy-defining diplomacy. Can they redraw the map in the Middle East? ✍️@HerbKeinon

A new plan supported by the United States calls for a 60-day pause while talks for a longer-term truce are ongoing. In response, Hamas said in a statement released early Friday that it is eager to put an end to the conflict and that it is in consultation with Palestinian factions over the terms of the proposed truce. "We are consulting with the Palestinian factions on the most recent offer from mediators in order to put an end to the Zionist aggression and guarantee the uninterrupted delivery of aid," the statement said. The panel also stated that after those deliberations were over, it would make a final longevity of any possible truce continues to be the primary obstacle in the negotiations.
