Washington Mystics trade two-time WNBA All-Star Ariel Atkins to Sky for No. 3 draft pick

New York Times24-02-2025
The Washington Mystics are trading two-time WNBA All-Star Ariel Atkins to the Chicago Sky in exchange for the No. 3 pick in this year's draft, the team announced on Sunday.
Washington also receives swap rights for Chicago's 2027 first-round pick and acquires its second-round pick, according to the source. ESPN first reported the news.

A 2019 WNBA champion with the Mystics and 2020 Olympian, Atkins averaged just under 15 points per game for Washington in 2024 when the Mystics just missed a playoff appearance. Chicago is receiving experience to bolster its roster during a critical time of rebuild. Atkins adds to a team that includes incoming second-year star Angel Reese and Kamilla Cardoso, and Chicago added the likes of Kia Nurse and veteran Courtney Vandersloot.
'We are building a program to sustain a period of contention during the next era of Mystics Basketball. Our ambitious return to prolonged excellence requires time, intention, and difficult decisions,' general manager Jamila Wideman said in a statement Sunday. 'Trading Ariel, a champion and celebrated Mystic, is one of those difficult decisions. In exchange, we are afforded another opportunity to select a young impact player at the top of the draft who can be part of our aspirational future.'
In contention for a playoff spot until the conclusion of the regular season, the Sky lost five consecutive games to finish 10th in the standings last season.
Atkins' departure from Washington is the continuation of a rebuild in the nation's capital. Washington parted ways with general manager Mike Thibault and coach Eric Thibault earlier this offseason following a 14-26 season, and introduced new coach Sydney Johnson and GM Jamila Wideman earlier in February. Receiving draft capital is a top choice for Washington to begin its climb back up the standings, and the move not only helps for this season but also in a couple of years.

Sex toy thrown onto WNBA court for second time in 3 days, briefly stopping game

Three days after a WNBA game was stopped after a fan tossed a sex toy onto the court, it happened again. The bright green object was thrown onto the court at Wintrust Arena during a contest between the Golden State Valkyries and the Chicago Sky on Friday, forcing referees to stop play. The stoppage happened midway through the third quarter after Valkyries guard Kate Martin launched and missed a deep 3-pointer. Officials stopped play immediately after the toy flew onto the court along the baseline underneath the Sky's basket. Referee Blanca Burns quickly kicked it off the floor before a Sky equipment staffer removed it. Sky forward Elizabeth Williams expressed her frustration with the incident. 'I think it's super disrespectful. I don't get it, I don't really get the point of it,' Williams said during a postgame news conference after Chicago fell to Golden State 73-66. 'It's really immature. Whoever is doing it just needs to grow up.' A similar occurrence took place on Tuesday night while a neon green sex toy was tossed onto the floor in a game between the Valkyries and the Atlanta Dream at the Chase Center in San Francisco. That incident happened during the fourth quarter, with less than a minute left on the clock, and television cameras caught the toy before a laughing security guard removed it with a towel. Sha'Carri Richardson arrested in alleged domestic violence incident, police say

Sha'Carri Richardson was arrested after an alleged incident at the Seattle–Tacoma International Airport, according to a police report obtained by USA TODAY Sports. According to the report, Richardson was arrested for domestic violence on Sunday. Richardson and a male companion were involved in a verbal altercation as they exited through airport security, the police report states. Richardson allegedly pushed the man and he fell into a nearby column, according to the Seattle Police Department. According to the report, police viewed airport security footage, and the video allegedly showed the man attempting to walk away from Richardson, but she continued to bump into him. Police also say Richardson threw a pair of headphones at the man. Richardson was booked at the South Correctional Entity in Des Moines, Washington, on Sunday and released on Monday, jail records show. 'We are aware of the report and we have no comment at this time,' USA Track and Field said to USA TODAY Sports. Richardson ran a 11.07 and finished second in her heat in the 100 meters to advance to Friday's semifinal at the U.S. track and field championships. Richardson later withdrew from the 100 semifinal but has decided to run in the 200 on Sunday, according to USA track and field. The U.S. championships serves as a qualifing meet for the world championships. Richardson has a bye into the 100 at this year's world championships because she is the defending champion. Richardson earned a silver medal in the 100 at the 2024 Paris Olympics. She was also a part of Team USA's gold-medal winning 4x100-relay team. Richardson is one of the most recognizable American track and field athletes. She won the 100 meters at the 2020 Olympic trials but was later suspended for testing positive for marijuana and didn't compete at the Tokyo Olympics. WNBA Makes Historic Angel Reese Announcement on Tuesday

WNBA Makes Historic Angel Reese Announcement on Tuesday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Chicago Sky suffered their third straight loss on Tuesday night. This team had high hopes heading into the second half of the season, but they ended up getting blown out yet again by the Minnesota Lynx, 91-68. Angel Reese did what she could for the Sky in this one, though, registering 11 points on 4-of-8 shooting, 11 rebounds, three assists, and a block in 30 minutes of action. The downside for the 23-year-old, however, is her nine turnovers in the game, which represented a significant portion of Chicago's 21 turnovers on the evening. Despite her effort, Reese's performance still wasn't enough to help the Sky avoid another deflating defeat. Be that as it may, Reese was still able to make WNBA history in the blowout loss. The league took to social media to announce the Sky star's latest historic milestone. "🚨 Angel Reese Makes HISTORY… Again! Angel Reese drops her 10th straight double-double, becoming the only player in WNBA history with multiple streaks of 10+ double-doubles. "She currently has 11 PTS and 10 REB vs. the Lynx 🔥" the league posted on X. Entering Tuesday's game, Reese averaged 14.0 points, 12.6 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 1.5 steals in 21 appearances this season. She is currently leading the league in rebounds by a significant margin, with A'ja Wilson averaging 9.2 boards per game at the No. 2 spot. It's a quick turnaround for the Sky, as they return to action on Thursday in a home game against the Seattle Storm. This should be considered a good thing for Reese and Co. as they immediately get an opportunity to make amends for Tuesday's blowout story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jul 23, 2025, where it first appeared.
