Israeli singer Yuval Raphael carries Nova Festival survival story to Eurovision
Raphael, a survivor of the Oct. 7,2023, Hamas massacre at the Supernova music festival, will perform 'New Day Will Rise,' a powerful anthem penned by songwriter Keren Peles. She earned her place at Eurovision by winning Season 11 of 'The Next Star' television competition and is scheduled to compete in the second semifinal on May 15.
Herzog offered his heartfelt support, saying: 'You have a wonderful personality, your story is incredible, and every time I hear the song, my heart swells with pride. We are immensely proud of you and wish you the best of luck in this mission,' according to a press release from the President's Residence.

Raphael emphasized that simply standing on the Eurovision stage is a profound personal victory. 'On the one hand, I'm working as someone who wants to win,' she told the president. 'But on the other hand, just being there feels like a victory. I have the privilege to do this.'
That privilege is not to be taken for granted. On that dark Simchat Torah morning 19 months ago, Raphael was dancing with friends at the music festival near the Gaza border when the massacre began. For seven harrowing hours, she hid in a small bomb shelter near Kibbutz Be'eri, lying beneath bodies, pretending to be dead—even after being hit by shrapnel. 'I had to step on bodies to get out,' she recalled. 'It was unbearable.'
She wrestled with heavy survivor's guilt. 'You ask yourself: 'Why was I saved and not them?'' she said. 'Once I made peace with that, I decided to give my dreams a chance. I got a second shot at life. To let fear hold me back would be dishonoring those who didn't survive. I have to fly with what I've been given.'

The trauma still echoes, but so does her resolve. 'We're coming to win no matter what,' she said. 'It feels like training for the Olympics—we're working around the clock.'
Her participation comes amid intensified scrutiny of Israel's role in the contest. The European Broadcasting Union recently updated its flag policy, allowing PLO flags and other banners permitted under Swiss law to be displayed in the audience—so long as they are not 'associated with hate, terrorism or violence.'
However, all political messaging remains banned on stage, and only national flags are allowed during performances and official events. Violators risk confiscation or removal from the venue.

The European Broadcasting Union's decision follows calls from activists and broadcasters, including Spain's RTVE, to ban Israel over the ongoing war in Gaza. The EBU rejected the appeal, affirming that all member broadcasters remain eligible.
Last year's contest in Malmö, Sweden, saw large protests, security threats, and the disqualification of Israel's original entry—'October Rain'— for being too political. Despite the challenges, Israel's Eden Golan placed fifth overall with the modified song 'Hurricane.' This year, Eurovision officials are again preparing for tensions but insist the event's core mission—to celebrate music—is unchanged.
The contest will be held at St. Jakobshalle arena in Basel, with semifinals on May 13 and 15 and the grand final on May 17. Representing Israel, Raphael carries not just a song, but a story of survival, resilience and tribute to lives lost.

President Donald Trump has ramped up expectations around a possible 60-day ceasefire in the war in Gaza after he said Thursday that a response from Hamas was expected within the next day. Asked by a reporter whether Hamas has agreed to the latest ceasefire and hostage deal, Trump replied 'We'll see what happens, we're going to know over the next 24 hours.' But the proposal offers two key concessions to Hamas demands, spacing out the release of hostages over the entire timeline and offering stronger guarantees - in this case, directly from Trump - that the ceasefire will continue beyond 60 days even if a comprehensive agreement to end the war has not yet been reached. The plan calls for the release of 10 living Israeli hostages and 18 deceased hostages spread out over the full timeline, according to a source familiar with the negotiations who shared details of the plan. On the first day of the ceasefire, Hamas would release eight living hostages. In exchange, Israel would release an unspecified number of Palestinian prisoners and detainees, and withdraw its forces from pre-agreed locations in northern Gaza. Israel would then withdraw from parts of southern Gaza on the seventh day, following the release of a number of deceased hostages. Israel and Hamas would also immediately enter into negotiations for a permanent ceasefire once the initial truce goes into effect. A total of 50 hostages remain in Gaza, at least 20 of whom are believed to be alive. The last two living hostages would be released on the fiftieth day of the ceasefire. Meanwhile, five deceased hostages would be released on the seventh and thirtieth days, while the final eight would be released on the final day. Under the deal, hostages will be released without ceremonies or fanfare at Israel's request – unlike during the last truce, when Hamas staged public propaganda events around hostage transfers that sparked outrage in Israel. Humanitarian aid will immediately begin to flow into Gaza at the start of the ceasefire, including from the United Nations and from other aid organizations, similar to the previous ceasefire which began on January 19. On Thursday, Israeli-American hostage Edan Alexander met with Trump in Washington and said he told the president that he worries continued fighting in Gaza endangers the remaining hostages. A statement from the Hostages and Missing Families Forum after the meeting quoted Alexander as telling Trump, 'I fear continued fighting endangers the hostages and hope you can achieve another historic breakthrough — a comprehensive deal to free them all, all 50 hostages. You are the person who can make it happen.'

Israeli officials to hold ceasefire talks in Washington amid military escalation in Gaza

Israeli planes and tanks struck heavily in north and south Gaza on Tuesday, destroying clusters of homes, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's confidant was in Washington, expected to discuss a possible ceasefire. Thousands of residents again took flight as Israel issued new orders to evacuate, while its tanks pushed into eastern areas in Gaza City in the north and into Khan Younis and Rafah in the south, residents said. Local health authorities said strikes had killed at least 20 people, with clusters of houses reported destroyed in Gaza City's Shejaia and Zeitoun districts, east of Khan Younis and in Rafah. There was no immediate comment from the Israeli military. Ismail, a resident of the Sheikh Radwan suburb of Gaza City, told Reuters that freshly displaced families were setting up tents in the road, after fleeing from areas north and east of the city and finding no other ground available. 'We don't sleep because of the sounds of explosions from tanks and planes. The occupation is destroying homes east of Gaza, in Jabalia and other places around us,' he said via a text message, asking that his surname be withheld for his security. Israel's Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer, a confidant of Netanyahu, is in Washington this week to meet with officials at the White House, Trump's spokesperson Karoline Leavitt told reporters at a press briefing on Monday. Dermer would be exploring possibilities of regional diplomatic deals in the wake of Israel's 12-day war with Iran last month, as well as ending the Gaza war, according to an Israeli official. Netanyahu is due to travel to Washington next week and meet Trump on 7 July, a US official said. The two leaders are expected to discuss Iran, Gaza, Syria and other regional challenges, an Israeli official in Washington said. Senior Hamas official Sami Abu Zuhri said pressure by Trump on Israel would be key to any breakthrough in stalled ceasefire efforts. He said: We call upon the US administration to atone for its sin towards Gaza by declaring an end to the war. After a six-week ceasefire at the start of this year, talks on extending the truce have been stalled. Palestinian and Egyptian sources with knowledge of the latest ceasefire efforts said that mediators Qatar and Egypt had stepped up their contacts with the two warring sides, but that no date had been set yet for a new round of truce talks. Hamas says it is willing to release all remaining hostages only as part of a deal that would end the war. Israel says the hostages must go free, and the war can end only when Hamas is disarmed and no longer ruling Gaza. The war began when Hamas fighters stormed into Israel on 7 October 2023, killed 1 200 people, most of them civilians, and took 251 hostages back to Gaza in a surprise attack. Israel's subsequent military assault has killed more than 56 000 Palestinians, most of them civilians, according to the Gaza health ministry, displaced almost the entire 2.3 million population and plunged the enclave into a humanitarian crisis.
