It is funny how many people (including in India) think using chopsticks or balancing peas on the tines of a fork are refined but
eating with fingers
is declasse. They are delusional. Or, maybe just ignorant. The fact is chopsticks can be managed by anyone just by joining them together with a rubber band. And pea-balancing is hardly a useful skill. But eating with fingers needs training, and once mastered, is the most efficient and stimulating way to ingest food.
In fact, the act of eating with fingers is nothing short of food yoga. Not only do the five fingers crucial to the exercise represent the five elements-earth fire, water, wind and ether-but the sensitive nerve endings on their tips make the sensory appreciation of comestibles even more acute. And fine motor skills are required to ensure viands of all sizes, textures and temperatures are properly mixed, apportioned and then conveyed to the mouth without spillage.
Hygiene and safety benefits of eating with fingers far outstrip those achieved by using spoons, forks and knives. Hands are always washed before and after eating; that cleanliness cannot always be guaranteed when it comes to metal or plastic cutlery. Mouths are also invariably rinsed out after meals along with hands, ensuring that no food particles ferment into bacteria later; this habit of oral hygiene, sadly, is hardly practised in most cutlery-using cultures.

Right hands are the norm for eating and that is not peculiar to India; it is preferred wherever this practice has survived the colonial onslaught of spoons and forks around the world. And it applies equally to those who eat rice, millets and cassava as well as flatbreads and breads. Indeed, eating with fingers is a practice that unites the 'Global South' rather than merely economic parameters, and is an important but long undervalued common cultural attribute.
Dexterity is key. Rending flatbreads into appropriate wedges using just the fingers of one hand requires a delicate pas de deux between the thumb and fingers, as does the sectioning of vegetables and meats/fish and smushing rice or cassava with lentils or soft vegetables. Of the three western eating implements, only the spoon has really made inroads into India, partly due to convenience and partly as part of the globalised ethic. But it has not yet supplanted fingers: Indians use whichever is convenient. It is unfortunate that some Indians prefer spoons over fingers as their primary eating implement considering even the Mughals, whom many consider to be the epitome of sophistication, ate those elaborate biryanis and kormas with fingers!

1 2 3 Nagpur: A joint delegation of doctors led by the Indian Medical Association (IMA), Nagpur, submitted a memorandum to the chief minister through the district collector's office, strongly opposing a recent decision of the Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC) allowing homeopathic doctors to register as allopathic practitioners. The representation was handed over to Anup Khande, resident district collector (RDC), Nagpur. The memorandum, signed by IMA Nagpur president Dr Rajesh Sawarbandhe and secretary Dr Jitendra Sahu, warns that the MMC's notification dated June 30, allowing homeopaths who complete a short 'Certificate Course in Modern Pharmacology (CCMP)' to register under MMC, poses a serious threat to public health and patient safety. "The MMC was created exclusively to regulate MBBS and higher qualified allopathic doctors. Permitting lateral entry from a completely different system undermines medical ethics and public trust," the memorandum states. It adds that the one-year CCMP course cannot equate to years of rigorous MBBS education and clinical training. Pune: A 70-year-old woman from Mumbai, misdiagnosed with myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), a type of blood cancer specifically affecting the bone marrow, later turned out to be a case of chronic anaemia brought on by metabolic syndrome. The patient was a long-term hypertensive, obese and pre-diabetic with symptoms such as breathlessness and persistent fatigue similar to that of MDS. While a biopsy was not possible given her age and comorbidities, her treating doctor misdiagnosed her as an inconclusive case of MDS and suggested a bone marrow transplant. However, later when she was brought to Dr Vijaya Ramanan, haematologist, Yashoda Haematology Clinic, in June 2022, she was found to be a case of cytopenia or chronic anemia. I checked all her reports and tested her for serum insulin levels, retic and autoimmune markers. Her insulin levels were 120+, which was equivalent to that of 12 adult men. She was also taking initially suggested erythropoietin injections twice a week for almost a year, which cost the family Rs40,000 per month. The family was also asked to arrange money for a bone marrow transplant. "Once I ruled out MDS, I immediately brought in radical changes in her diet and lifestyle," Dr Ramanan said. "I eliminated gluten by restricting her to jowar and rajgira rotis, sugar, packaged foods, and dairy products (except a couple of teaspoons of milk in tea). Dosas, idlis, chillas all made of various pulses or millets along with some brown rice were added to her diet apart from a lot of green vegetables." The woman's life changed remarkably. Dr Ramanan said that within six months of these changes, her weight dropped by 15 kg. "She had black pigmentation on her legs, which various doctors attributed to varicose veins, ageing, and suntan, which suddenly started fading. She had skin tags on her neck which started reducing, and most importantly, her blood markers improved. During her last follow-up visit with me in May 2025, her serum insulin came down to a very respectable 9. She has also been taken off metformin and medication for uric acid completely. Her thyroid medication has been reduced, haemoglobin has been stable, and in general, she feels more active and energetic than before," he added. City-based haematologists said that such a misdiagnosis is a rare thing, and non-specialists must avoid declaring MDS in a patient. Dr Deepak R Patil, clinical haematologist, DPU Super Speciality Hospital, said, "Chronic anemia is one of the commonest presentations of MDS which is often under-diagnosed in adults, especially elderly. Diagnosis of MDS should preferably be done by a haematologist. Symptoms in haematological disorders are overlapping, hence involving a haematologist is always a prudent course of action. Chronic anemia is a common condition in elderly. Misdiagnosis and underdiagnosis both are not uncommon to see in this age group."
