Employees' strike disrupts MCC services

Time of India10-07-2025
Mangaluru: All services at the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) were affected on Thursday, after employees commenced an indefinite strike. Demanding the fulfilment of various requests, employees of the MCC, under the banner of the SK Municipal Employees Union, went on an indefinite strike, boycotting office work.
In front of the MCC office, a protest meeting was held, symbolically closing the main gate of the corporation and staging a sit-in. Sanitation workers also supported the employees' strike, leading to a halt in garbage disposal within the corporation's jurisdiction.
Addressing the protest meeting, Union district president Balu said that although the state organisation called for the strike, it was delayed by two days in Mangaluru, considering public interest.
Employees from all departments, including revenue, town planning, health, and engineering, are participating in the protest. Over 400 people joined the protest, completely halting the corporation's office work.
The sit-in protest will continue until the demands are met. Supporting the struggle, sanitation workers also joined the protest, suspending garbage disposal, he said.
There was no amendment to the C&R Rule for 14 years since 2011.

Employees who worked for 35-36 years are retiring without promotions. There is no job security for employees working here. The health benefits are available only to senior officials, not to the employees, he added.
Even when promotions are given to positions like that of the commissioner, they are not offered to employees who have risen from lower levels. The corporation's revenue is insufficient to pay employees' salaries. In places like Shivamogga and Kalaburagi, salaries have not been paid to employees for three months, he said, and demanded that salaries for employees should also be paid from the SFC fund.
Union district vice-president Devendrappa Parari, general secretary Bhaskar and secretary Shrinivas Gatti were present.

Rs 697cr disbursed to over 34.85L farmers in state under PM-Kisan

Bhubaneswar: A total of Rs 697 crore was disbursed to over 34.85 lakh farmers in the state under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-Kisan) scheme on Saturday. The state-level programme, held at ICAR-CIFA on the city's outskirts was attended by chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi, coinciding with Prime Minister Narendra Modi transferring Rs 20,500 crore directly into the bank accounts of over 9.7 crore farmers across the country from Varanasi. Under the scheme, Rs 2,000 each was transferred directly to the bank accounts of farmers. Majhi said, "It is our govt's commitment to ensure the inclusion of all eligible beneficiaries under the scheme. No eligible farmer in the state should be left out," he said, adding that saturation drives are underway in all blocks. He emphasised the govt's pro-farmer approach, highlighting that over 50 lakh farmers are also receiving Rs 4,000 annually under the CM-Kisan scheme. Together with PM-Kisan, eligible farmers are receiving a total of Rs 10,000 per year, he added. Calling on farmers to diversify, Majhi asked them to practice fisheries and animal husbandry to boost income. "Your income will not just double but multiply many times," he said. The CM also spoke about additional support under the Samruddha Krushak Yojana, under which farmers are being given Rs 800 per quintal as input assistance. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Couple Wonders Why Their Photo Went Viral Till They Go Through The Comments Learn More Undo He said around 17 lakh farmers received Rs 6,000 crore in kharif 2024, and over 3 lakh farmers got more than Rs 1,600 crore during rabi. St Xavier's School ordered to deposit Rs 2cr in FD amid fee dispute

Ahmedabad: St Xavier's School in Navrangpura was directed by the fee regulatory committee (FRC) to deposit nearly Rs 2 crore in a fixed deposit (FD) after it was found to have collected Rs 16,000 more per student than the approved fee. The committee issued a notice to the school and called for a personal hearing, during which this interim arrangement was made. According to reports, the FRC set the annual fees for the academic years 2024–25, 2025–26, and 2026–27. Compared to the previous year (2023–24), the committee reduced the fee for Classes 1 to 8 by Rs 16,859. However, the school continued to collect the earlier proposed amount of Rs 39,360 from students, prompting complaints from parents. In response, the Ahmedabad district education officer (DEO) ordered the school to refund the excess amount within seven days. The school, however, failed to comply, stating that it filed an appeal with the revision committee challenging the FRC's fee order. The DEO rejected this explanation, and the FRC issued a fresh notice, summoning the school for a hearing. According to the FRC's ruling, if the revision committee upholds the FRC's original fee order, the FD amount will be refunded to the students. If the committee approves a fee hike, the school will be allowed to reclaim the FD amount along with the accrued interest. This interim solution ensures the protection of student interests while the fee revision appeal is under review. HC reinstates Sidhi bank CEO, slams his suspension for ‘hurting MLA's ego'

Jabalpur: The MP high court has set aside the suspension of Rajesh Raikwar, CEO of the District Central Cooperative Bank in Sidhi, ruling that the action was taken to placate a local MLA rather than for any legitimate administrative reason. In a strongly-worded judgment delivered on July 29, Justice Vivek Jain said the record showed "undue pressure" had been exerted after Raikwar refused an MLA's demand to reverse the transfer of a bank clerk. The court observed: "In the present case it is duly indicated from the facts available on record that it was the case of undue pressure being exerted and not a case of general public grievance of the constituency being brought to the notice of the bank management. It is in fact a case of the MLA feeling ego hurt by refusal of the petitioner to accept her demand of cancellation of transfer of clerk and this led to the entire unpleasant institution. " The petitioner's counsel has argued in the court that his client had refused to cancel the transfer of a bank clerk from Gandhi Gram Branch to Sidhi Branch -- a decision the CEO had made using his administrative powers. Raikwar was suspended on June 10. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Use an AI Writing Tool That Actually Understands Your Voice Grammarly Install Now The court noted that the suspension order was triggered by a complaint jointly signed by the MLAs and routed through the district's in-charge minister, eventually reaching the cooperative minister, who recommended action against Raikwar. The managing director of the bank then issued the suspension order, citing allegations of "unparliamentary language" used by Raikwar during a phone call with the MLA. However, the high court found that none of the materials placed on record demonstrated any actual use of indecent language. The content of the alleged conversation, as quoted in official note-sheets, "did not amount to any indecency," the court said. Raikwar's counsel had argued that he was being targeted for performing his duties independently and without political interference. The court concurred, calling the suspension a "clear abuse of power" and, "passed only to satisfy the ego of local MLA of the district and nothing else". On the issue of alternative remedy, the state had contended that Raikwar should have approached the registrar under Section 55(2) of the MP Cooperative Societies Act or the Cooperative Tribunal under Section 77(14). The court rejected this argument, ruling that given the involvement of the cooperative minister and MLAs, the remedies could not be deemed "efficacious remedy". The high court also observed, "In fact, there is no real remedy at all. " Holding the suspension illegal and arbitrary, the HC ordered Raikwar's reinstatement with all service benefits, observing that public servants "suspending the petitioner is held to be an order passed in exercise of excessive powers and actuated by bias and at behest of MLA and the MLA having over reached her jurisdiction to bring the just grievances of public to notice of the bank authority, but it was a case of a clerk using his political connections to bring about cancellation ordered by the CEO. Therefore, the impugned suspension order deserves to be and is hereby quashed." Get the latest lifestyle updates on Times of India, along with Friendship Day wishes , messages and quotes !
