'Cruel irony': Hansal Mehta reacts to cancellation of MAMI Mumbai Film Festival 2025
The decision was taken to revamp the festival with a "dynamic vision" and a "new team" to ensure that it will return as a premier showcase for the best of independent, regional, and classic cinema from India and around the world, said festival director
Dungarpur in a statement.

"We are working diligently to reschedule the festival and will announce the new dates for the 2026 edition as soon as possible. Thank you for your understanding and support," he added.
The move comes as a major hiccup for the festival that has had a fair run since it was founded in 1997.
Reacting to the same, filmmaker
, whose 'Aligarh' and 'The Buckingham Murders' were earlier premiered at the festival, voiced his discontent.
"It's a cruel irony that Mumbai draped in the glitz of being India's financial and cinematic capital cannot keep alive a film festival of its own," the filmmaker wrote on social media.
He went on to call out the "self-appointed gatekeepers of cinema" who left the festival for better stages and safer bets, further adding that only a few "passionate believers" took care of it.
"And now that fragile flame has been snuffed out.
No ceremony. No outrage. Just a slow, silent forgetting. What should have been a cultural cornerstone has been reduced to a footnote - another casualty of apathy dressed as progress," Mehta concluded.
Many took to the comment section and echoed similar sentiments.
Filmmaker Onir wrote, "Heartbreaking that the industry that produces the largest number of films ... failed to nurture this one space that celebrated cinema as a form of art ...

beyond box office and stars ., what a loss for the city and a shame for us as an industry."
Organised by the Mumbai Academy of Moving Image (MAMI), the film festival has emerged as a hub for the world to discover emerging South Asian talent and contemporary cinema. Several leading Bollywood celebrities like Priyanka Chopra, Farhan Khan,
, and
, have been associated with the festival over the years.

Kargil Vijay Diwas: Did you know THIS national award-winning Bollywood actor served in Indian Army during Kargil War?
As India celebrates Kargil Vijay Diwas , honouring the brave soldiers who fought in the 1999 Kargil War , one name from the world of films shines in a different light, Nana Patekar . Known for his intense roles and award-winning performances, the veteran actor did something truly remarkable. He left the comfort of film sets and joined the Indian Army during the war, putting his life on the line alongside real soldiers. Not a typical Bollywood-style hero Vishwanath Patekar, famously known as Nana Patekar, is one of the finest actors in Hindi and Marathi cinema. Born in 1951, Nana made his film debut in 'Gaman' in 1978. In the years that followed, he won hearts with films like 'Parinda', 'Prahaar', 'Angaar', 'Salaam Bombay', and 'Tirangaa'. He may not have looked like the usual Bollywood hero, but his power-packed performances spoke louder than anything else. A huge name in the 90s, Nana is also a three-time National Award winner. He trained with real-life soldiers While shooting 'Prahaar', Nana went through serious military training. As reported by BollywoodShaadis, he trained with the Maratha Light Infantry for three years. This wasn't just for the cameras—it left a strong impact on him. When the Kargil War broke out in 1999, Nana didn't just cheer from the sidelines. He wanted to join the Army and serve the nation for real. But his wish was met with hesitation by military officials. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Abandoned houses for sale near you at affordable prices abandoned houses Learn More Undo Officials refused his request at first At first, the army officials didn't agree with his request. Nana wasn't ready to give up so easily. He even mentioned his national-level shooting experience, hoping it would help, but still, nothing moved forward. Nana reached out to George Fernandes When he was told only the Defence Ministry could approve his request, Nana went straight to the top. He contacted the then Defence Minister, George Fernandes. During his appearance on 'Kaun Banega Crorepati', Nana shared: 'I knew our Defence Minister George Fernandes ji, so I called him. Even he said it is impossible. I told him that even though the training for commission is six months, I trained for three years. He was surprised and asked me about it. After learning of my experience with the Maratha Light Infantry, he asked me, 'When do you want to go?'' Nana patrolled in conflict-hit zones In August 1999, Nana officially joined the Army as an honorary captain. His dream had come true. Wearing the Indian Army uniform with pride, he was posted in some of the most dangerous areas during the war—Dras, Kupwara, Baramulla, Sopore, and Mughalpura. He did everything that the other soldiers did. He patrolled the Line of Control , stood guard, and even helped out in military hospitals. Nana didn't just visit the camps for photos—he lived like a soldier. Lost 20 kg while on duty Life at the border was not easy. Nana was part of the Quick Response Team (QRT) and saw the war up close. Speaking to The Lallantop, Nana said: 'I was 76 kg when I reached Srinagar. By the time I came back, I was 56 kg.' He lost 20 kg during his time at the front. But instead of complaining, he felt proud to have stood with India's brave soldiers in a real war zone. Returned to acting with more power Once his service ended, Nana returned to films. His passion for acting never faded, but now, he had a new layer of experience and pride. He gave back-to-back strong performances and continued to impress audiences with his honest and powerful screen presence.

There have been many actors and actresses in the Bollywood industry who did not want to work with each other and in some way or the other, they used to remove each other from the films. Shashi Kapoor was initially supposed to be seen as the lead actor in the film Nasihat, but he did not want to work with Shabana Azmi, so he asked the producer to replace her. But then what happened was that he later got replaced by Rajesh Khanna in the film. Why did Shashi Kapoor wanted to replace Shabana Azmi in Nasihat? Shabana Azmi was signed opposite Shashi Kapoor in the film Nasihat, but Shashi Kapoor was pressuring the director and producer to replace Shabana Azmi. But then the makers decided to replace Shashi Kapoor with Rajesh Khanna. Saiyaara Title Song Is In Spotify's Global Top 5 List. How Ahaan Panday's Wish In The Film Is Coming True In Real Life
New Delhi: Some stories are written. Others, somehow, write themselves. And then there's Saiyaara, a Mohit Suri film that scripted a moment so full of yearning, it was meant to be just that: cinematic. Until life decided to pick up the pen. In a surreal reel-to-real twist, the title track of Saiyaara, the very song Ahaan Panday's character Krish hopes will find the love he lost, has done exactly that. Only this time, not just within the film's universe. The song has now reached everywhere, just as Krish dreamed, and became the first-ever Bollywood song to enter Spotify's Top 50 Global chart, currently holding the No. 5 spot. "Make The Song So Big, Nobody Can Miss It" To understand just how uncanny this is, we need to go back to the film's most heartbreaking scene. In Saiyaara, Krish (played by Ahaan Panday) walks away from a rising music career to look after Vaani (Aneet Padda), the love of his life, after she is diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's. On a quiet vacation meant to help her cope, things take a turn: Vaani begins to forget him, confusing Krish with her ex, Mahesh Iyer. In a deeply moving moment, Krish hides his heartbreak and narrates their own story to her as if it belonged to someone else. He tells her about a "friend" whose girlfriend is forgetting him. In response, Vaani suggests that the friend should create a song, something so powerful and unforgettable that it finds her wherever she is. "Make a song so she never forgets him. Every time she hears it, she should remember he exists," she said. Vaani herself begins writing that song and titles it Saiyaara. But as her condition worsens, Vaani realises she has hurt Krish. She quietly disappears from his life to protect him. For six months, Krish searches. Then, in a spark of memory, he remembers Saiyaara, the song she wrote, and her words. In desperation, he rushes to his music producer friend and pleads, "Promote it. Make it reach every household. Every radio. Every phone. Every corner. Everywhere. So that if she's out there, she hears it." Cut to 2025 - it's happening. A Historic Spotify Milestone The title track, Saiyaara, composed by Tanishk Bagchi along with Faheem Abdullah and Arslan Nizami, has become the first Bollywood song to break into Spotify's Global Top 50. Sung by indie artist Faheem Abdullah, and written and composed by Abdullah and Nizami, both self-made musicians from Kashmir, the track has become a Gen Z romance anthem and a global phenomenon. As of now, Saiyaara is sitting pretty at No. 5, beating international heavyweights like Blackpink's Jump, Lady Gaga's Die With A Smile, Billie Eilish's Birds Of A Feather, and Alex Warren's Eternity. Saiyaara's Box Office Success While Saiyaara the song charts new territory on streaming platforms, Saiyaara the film is breaking records of its own. A Yash Raj Films production helmed by Mohit Suri, the romantic drama starring newcomers Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda has opened to massive box office numbers. According to reports, the film earned Rs 21 crore on its opening day and crossed Rs 100 crore within the first four days. Much of its success is credited to its chart-topping music, which has now completely taken over Spotify India's Top 10 as well. Apart from the main track, the film's album features: Dhun by Mithoon and Arijit Singh, Barbaad (Reprise) by Jubin Nautiyal and Shilpa Rao, Tum Ho Toh by Vishal Mishra, Humsafar by Sachet-Parampara and Saiyaara (Reprise) by Arijit Singh and Shreya Ghoshal A Manifestation That Left The Screen There are chart successes, and then there are cultural moments. What Saiyaara is experiencing right now feels like the latter. In a country where film music has always had the power to shape emotion and memory, Saiyaara is doing something bigger. It's taking the wish of a boy who just wanted to be remembered, and letting the world hear it loud and clear. And somewhere out there, if Vaani was real, she'd probably be hearing it too.
