Amend Electricity Ordinance to protect new tenants, Pujut rep tells DUN
KUCHING (May 23): Pujut assemblyman Adam Yii Siew Sang has called on the Sarawak government to amend the Electricity Ordinance to enhance service delivery and protect the interests of consumers.
Speaking during the debate on the Motion of Appreciation for the Yang di-Pertua Negeri's speech at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) today, Yii highlighted an issue affecting new tenants and homeowners.
He pointed out that Sarawak Energy Berhad (Sarawak Energy) currently has the authority to reject electricity supply applications from new occupants if there are outstanding bills left by previous owners or tenants.
'This situation creates difficulties for many homeowners and new tenants who have no connection to the previous occupants, and it is unfair for someone to bear another person's debt.
'I urge for this ordinance to be amended so that if a new applicant can provide proof, such as a tenancy agreement or a statutory declaration, showing they have no ties to the defaulter, then Sarawak Energy should allow the reconnection of electricity supply,' he said.
He also recommended the introduction of prepaid electricity meters, particularly for rental properties, saying the system offers several advantages.
These include preventing arrears through upfront credit payments, reducing disputes between landlords, tenants, and Sarawak Energy, and encouraging responsible electricity usage.
'Most importantly, prepaid meters are more tamper-resistant and help reduce electricity theft and losses to Sarawak Energy,' he added.
On a separate note, Yii raised concerns over delays and high costs faced by new entrepreneurs in Miri in obtaining piped gas connections from Sarawak Gas Distribution Sdn Bhd (SGD), a subsidiary of Petros.
'Applications currently go through multiple stages without clear guidelines or defined timelines.
'This can cause delays in operations, financial losses, and in some cases, the cancellation of business plans,' he said.
To address this, Yii urged the relevant ministry and SGD to review the application process and introduce a fast-track mechanism for commercial users, including installation incentives for SMEs.

Awang Tengah: Sarawak shifts focus to value-added exports and green energy leadership

KUCHING (July 2): The Sarawak government is actively pursuing value-added growth and is no longer focusing solely on raw commodity exports, said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan. The International Trade, Industry and Investment Minister said the state is now laying the foundation for advanced manufacturing, green economy initiatives and digital-based exports as part of a long-term strategy to build a more resilient and innovation-driven economy. 'We are investing in the future, which is in renewable energy, semiconductors and high-value sectors that will position Sarawak as a major economic force in the region. 'Our focus has thus shifted because we want to go beyond exporting crude oil, gas and palm oil,' he said during his keynote address at the launching ceremony of Sarawak Export Day 2025 held at a local hotel here today. He added that Sarawak is poised to lead the country in green energy development, with active initiatives in hydropower, solar, biomass and hydrogen production. To support this ambition, Awang Tengah said the state has amended its Electricity Ordinance to allow greater investor participation in boosting generation capacity. 'We have set a clear target in which by 2030, we aim to generate at least 10,000 megawatts of electricity, and by 2035, 15,000 megawatts which will all be from clean and renewable sources,' he said. Awang Tengah also mentioned that Sarawak will be developed into a hub for semiconductor manufacturing and aerospace economic activities, reflecting the state's shift towards high-technology industries and global competitiveness. 'Since 2021, Sarawak has approved over RM102 billion in investments involving 1,180 projects. RON95 price unchanged, RON97 up 7 sen per litre
MOF says the retail price of diesel in Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan remains at RM2.15 per litre, while in Peninsular Malaysia, it increases by seven sen to RM2.88 per litre for the same period. – Photo by Roystein Emmor KUALA LUMPUR (June 25): The retail price of RON95 petrol remains unchanged at RM2.05 per litre, while that of RON97 increases by seven sen, from RM3.14 to RM3.21 per litre, for the period from June 26 to July 2. In a statement today, the Ministry of Finance (MOF) said the retail price of diesel in Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan remains at RM2.15 per litre, while in Peninsular Malaysia, it increases by seven sen to RM2.88 per litre for the same period. 'In line with the rise in global oil market prices, the government has set the retail price of RON97 petrol at RM3.21 per litre, while the retail price of diesel in Peninsular Malaysia is RM2.88 per litre. 'The retail price of diesel in Peninsular Malaysia remains lower than the floated price of RM3.35 per litre on June 10, 2024,' the statement read. MOF said the prices were set based on the weekly retail pricing of petroleum products using the Automatic Pricing Mechanism (APM) formula. The statement also noted that the government will continue to monitor market developments and adjust the retail prices of RON97 and diesel in line with global oil price movements while supporting price stability.
