MoS Margherita in Cambodia visits Angkor Wat, highlights India's restoration initiatives

Hans India09-07-2025
Phnom Penh: Union Minister of State (MoS) Pabitra Margherita on Wednesday visited Angkor Wat, the world's largest religious structure, situated in Cambodia and described it as a testament to shared civilisation ties between India and the Southeast Asian nation.
The MoS arrived in Cambodia on Sunday, aiming to enhance cooperation between India and the Southeast Asian nation across key sectors through productive engagements.
On the last day of his visit, while visiting Angkor Wat, he expressed pride in India becoming the first country to extend support for the restoration work of the ancient temple.
The MoS also visited Ta Prohm Temple and appreciated the remarkable efforts of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) in its restoration and conservation work of the temple.
"Delighted to visit Angkor Wat, the world's largest ancient temple complex in Cambodia -- a magnificent symbol of India-Cambodia shared civilisational heritage. Proud to note India was the first country to offer support for restoration. Also visited the Ta Prohm Temple, where the Archaeological Survey of India is doing commendable work of restoration and conservation," Margherita posted on X.
India has long been associated with the temple restoration work in Cambodia.
The first restoration work was carried out by the ASI in Cambodia at Angkor Wat temple from 1986 to 1993, which is a world heritage site of UNESCO and an important tourist destination in Cambodia visited by millions of tourists every year.
India was the first country to offer such assistance on an appeal by the Cambodian Government in 1980, and is still appreciated by the Cambodian leadership and public alike.
Additionally, on Cambodia's request, India also agreed to restore the Ta Prohm temple in Angkor Archaeological Park in Siem Reap. ASI has been working on this project since 2003.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the work of ASI has been widely appreciated. The first two phases of restoration and conservation of the Ta Prohm temple were completed in July 2015 at a total cost of Rs. 34.16 crores.
ASI is currently undertaking the third phase of restoration and conservation work at Ta Prohm temple at an estimated expenditure of Rs 29.32 crores.
The third phase of restoration work started in November 2016 and is expected to be completed by 2026.

Andhra CM lays stone for Rs 78 crore Gandikota tourism project

VIJAYAWADA: Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu unveiled a master plan to transform Gandikota into a world-class tourism destination, likening its scenic landscape to the 'Grand Canyon' and highlighting its historical significance from the Kakatiya and Vijayanagara eras. Speaking at the Andhra Pradesh Tourism Investors Meet held in Gandikota of Kadapa district, Naidu laid the foundation for a Rs 78 crore tourism project under the SASCI (Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment) scheme. The initiative aims to turn the region into a major tourism hub with a distinct identity. Agreements worth Rs 500 crore were signed during the event with companies including EaseMyTrip and Hilton Hotels. These cover projects involving hotels, adventure sports, kayaking, high ropes, and jet skiing across Gandikota, Srisailam, Mantralayam, and Tirupati. Furthermore, the Chief Minister also announced that the Gandikota Utsavalu would be celebrated grandly on December 26 and 27, with several eco-friendly attractions planned, including a viewpoint, tent city, boating facilities, and enhanced fort lighting. Other proposed features include a ropeway, a glass-bottom walkway, and immersive light-and-sound shows. A tent city will be operational by year-end, and heli-rides offering aerial views of Gandikota will begin in September. Caravan tourism will cater to visitors from Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Chennai.

Goa assembly passes bill to curb touting at tourist spots; fines hiked upto Rs 1 lakh

The Goa assembly has passed a bill introducing stricter measures and heavier penalties against public nuisance and unauthorised activities at tourist spots across the state. State Tourism Minister Rohan Kahunte on Friday tabled the Goa Tourist Places (Protection and Maintenance) Amendment Bill, 2025, which aims to strengthen the 2001 Act by significantly expanding the definition of 'nuisance' and increasing the fine limit to Rs 1 lakh. The bill was passed after a discussion, during which Khaunte said the legislation would curb unauthorised touting. 'There are agents for everything, and this bill is a positive step to regulate and eliminate touting activities,' he said, highlighting the need for better regulation to protect tourists and maintain order. The legislation has revised the definition of nuisance, which now includes a wide range of activities such as operating boats or floating objects causing danger or pollution, pestering tourists to buy goods or services, consuming alcohol or breaking glass bottles in unauthorised areas, cooking in open or non-designated areas, littering, conducting water sports or ticket sales from non-designated zones, unauthorised hawking, begging, or operating vehicles on beaches, and selling tourism services for locations outside the state without permission. The new law also criminalises obstruction of free tourist movement and coercive sales tactics. Under the amended section 10, violators will now face a minimum fine of Rs 5,000, extendable to Rs 1 lakh, and a punishment under section 223 (disobeying a public servant's order) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. The bill also introduces section 10A, which mandates a biennial review of fines by the government, allowing a revision of penalties by up to 10 per cent every two years, based on recommendations by the competent authority. As per the statement of Objects and Reasons of the Bill, the amendment was necessary in light of the rise in tourist footfall and growing instances of violations that have disrupted public order, degraded the environment, and harmed the tourism experience for both visitors and locals. 'This move aims to promote responsible and regenerative tourism in Goa while ensuring a safe, clean, and hospitable environment at tourist locations,' it stated.
