7 killed in Uttarakhand chopper crash: SDRF
The Aryan Aviation Helicopter was flying to Guptkashi from the Kedarnath Dham when it crashed at 5:30 am today.
The deceased have been identified as Captain Rajbir Singh Chauhan (39), resident of Jaipur, Vikram Rawat (47) a Badrinath Kedarnath Temple Committee representative and resident of Rasi, Vinod Devi (66), resident of Uttar Pradesh, Trishti Singh (19), resident of Uttar Pradesh, Rajkumar Suresh Jaiswal (41), resident of Gujarat, Shraddha Rajkumar Jaiswal and Kashi (2), resident of Maharashtra.
Rescue teams were immediately dispatched under the direction of SDRF Commander Arpan Yadav. The incident spot was located in a very inaccessible and dense forest area, where a fast-paced and coordinated rescue operation was carried out by the joint teams of SDRF, NDRF, and local police.
Rescue teams worked in inclement weather to retrieve the bodies of the deceased. Furthermore, the bodies will be brought down to the road by the SDRF team.
Employees of BKTC gathered at all the offices of the temple committee and expressed condolences at the demise of BKTC employee, Vikram Rawat, the Shri Badrinath Kedarnath Temple Committee spokesperson, Harish Gaur said.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami held a virtual high-level meeting with senior officials from the CM residence after the helicopter crash.
State Chief Secretary, Disaster Management Secretary, UCADA CEO, Garhwal Commissioner and other senior officials were present in the high-level meeting.
The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) will investigate the crash, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) stated.
The DGCA further said that, in light of the crash, the frequencies of helicopter operations to Char Dham would be reduced as a precautionary measure.
Enhanced surveillance and operational reviews are also being carried out by DGCA.
'Today, Aryan Aviation Bell 407 helicopter VT-BKA operating flight on sector Shri Kedarnath ji- Aryan Helipad, Guptkanshi, was involved in an accident. There were five passengers, one infant and one crew member on board. The helicopter took off at 05:19 hours for Guptkanshi and crashed near Gaurikund,' DGCA said providing details of the crash.
Chief Executive Officer of Uttarakhand Civil Aviation Department (UCADA), Sonika, stated that helicopter shuttle services in the area had been closed given the ongoing relief operations and weather conditions in the valley.
Sonika further stated that the District Magistrate and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) will reach the site soon.
'Since the rescue operation is underway and seeing the weather conditions in the valley, our shuttle services have been closed. Almost all the helicopters are involved in the rescue operation. DM and SSP will also reach the site soon,' Sonika told ANI.
'At around 5:30 AM, we got the information that a helicopter, which was going from Shri Kedarnath Dham to Guptkashi, could not be located. After some time, it was learnt that it had crashed near Gaurikund. Rescue operation is underway, SDRF teams have reached the spot. A total of 6 passengers and one pilot were on board the helicopter...' she further said. (ANI)

AHMEDABAD: An IndiGo flight bound for Diu was forced to abort take-off after a cockpit engine fire alert triggered panic. This near-miss comes just over a month after the deadly crash of Air India flight AI-171, which killed 260 people, including those on board and on the ground. Flight 6E-7966, operated on an ATR aircraft (VT-IYA), was preparing to take off from Ahmedabad when pilots suddenly received an 'engine one flameout' warning. Reacting swiftly, the crew rejected take-off and brought the aircraft to a safe halt. All 70 passengers and crew members on board escaped unhurt. The aircraft has now been grounded for detailed checks. Meanwhile, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has launched a formal probe into the incident, aiming to determine what triggered the fire alert. Reacting on the incident , An IndiGo Spokesperson says, "A technical snag indication was noticed just before take-off on IndiGo flight 6E7966 operating from Ahmedabad to Diu on 23 July 2025. Following the standard operating procedure, the pilots informed the authorities and returned the aircraft to bay. The aircraft will undergo necessary checks and maintenance before resuming operations."

In a written reply to Rajya Sabha, Murlidhar Mohol, MoS, Civil Aviation said that the data from one of the Flight Recorders of AI-171 (VT-ANB) has been downloaded in the Flight Recorder Lab of the AAIB at Udaan Bhawan. He also stated that the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has undertaken several efforts to strengthen the country's aviation safety on a regular basis. 'An Investigation has been ordered by Director General (DG), Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) under Rule 11 of the Aircraft (Investigation of Accidents & Incidents) Rules, 2017 to determine the probable cause(s)/ contributory factor(s) leading to the accident. Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) – India has a robust mechanism to enhance the aviation safety to ensure the safe operations,' the Union Minister said. Indian airports see three bird strikes a day, says DGCA in RTI reply
Hyderabad: Indian airports are recording at least three bird strikes daily, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has revealed in a reply to a Right to Information (RTI) request. As per the RTI reply, the confirmed bird strikes reported to the DGCA during 2024 stood at 1,278. When comparing this with data from the civil aviation ministry for preceding years, such incidents witnessed a twofold increase over the past six years. In 2019, the annual bird hit count was 528. The situation has become particularly concerning in recent times, with four aircraft being forced to make an emergency landing in the last month. On July 9, a Delhi-bound flight carrying 169 passengers encountered a bird strike immediately after taking off from Patna airport and returned to its origin. These incidents are frequent at lower altitudes where birds are typically found in greater numbers. The likelihood of such collisions is influenced by various factors, including the natural behaviour of birds, surrounding habitats, and seasonal migration routes, experts said. 'When birds collide with aircraft engines, it necessitates switching to an alternate engine and executing an emergency landing. Similarly, bird strikes on the windshield require immediate action. Certain types of damage, particularly to components like wings, become apparent only after the aircraft lands. These collisions typically happen at lower altitudes, around 2,000 feet, although bird strikes can occur even when aircraft are flying at 10,000 feet,' said Capt CS Randhawa, president, Federation of Indian Pilots, told TOI. According to GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd (GHIAL), robust and technology-driven bird control strategies, including high-frequency acoustic devices, have been deployed near the runways to deter bird movement. Trained staff use firecrackers at regular intervals to create sound deterrents during active runway hours, while grass near operational areas is routinely cleared to remove nesting opportunities and prevent food waste and litter accumulation around the airport premises. 'While the airport continues to strengthen in-house measures, maintaining airside safety is also influenced by surrounding land use. Nearby areas such as Katedan and Jalpally, which house some waste-processing units, have occasionally been flagged for non-compliance with environmental norms,' said an official in GHIAL.
