Couple killed as container lorry runs over them on Chennai-Bengaluru highway
A couple got killed after a container lorry laden with high-end new cars ran over on them and later caught fire at Poigai village in Vellore on Chennai-Bengaluru Highway (NH-48) on Saturday. The police said the deceased were identified as C. Ramesh (43), a farmer, and his wife R. Gomathi (36). They were native of K.V. Kuppam near Katpadi. Initial inquiry revealed that along with his wife, Ramesh was riding his two-wheeler on the service lane of the highway when the driver of the container lorry, S. Akash Yadhav (21), a native of U.P., allegedly failed to notice the motorist and hit the couple. The incident happened around 6 a.m. In the impact, the couple sustained serious injuries. The lorry ploughed into nearby open land, off the service lane, where it came in contact with overhead high tension power cables and caught fire. Immediately, other motorists and passersby rescued the couple and admitted them at Government Medical College Hospital in Vellore where the couple succumbed to injuries around 9 a.m. Locals also alerted Virinchipuram police about the accident and fire. Before firefighters from Vellore doused the fire, the lorry and two high-end cars inside the vehicle got completely gutted. Police said a friction of high-tension power cables with the lorry might be the reason for the fire accident. A case was registered, and further probe is underway.
