Bahrain seeks Mediterranean pact to fight Terror Money

TDT | Manama Bahrain's Shura Council has taken the lead in pushing for a unified parliamentary framework to fight terrorism financing across the Mediterranean region, with Second Deputy Chairperson Dr. Jihad Al-Fadhel urging the adoption of a common legislative charter. The call came during the 7th meeting of the Parliamentary Coordination Mechanism on Counter-Terrorism, hosted by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean in collaboration with the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT), held via video conference on Friday. Dr. Al-Fadhel emphasised that confronting terrorism demands more than military or executive action. She called for a shared legal system among parliaments to strengthen oversight, protect communities, and clamp down on the financial networks that support extremist acts. 'Security cannot be achieved without true international solidarity and unified political will,' she said. Bahrain's stance also brought digital threats into focus, with Al-Fadhel highlighting the urgent need to police cyberterrorism and cross-border digital attacks. Shura Council member Leena Habib Kassim also joined the session, which included firm condemnations of recent escalations in the region. Delegates called for peaceful resolutions and stressed the need for future joint legislative initiatives. The session concluded with plans to enhance Mediterranean parliamentary coordination through the second half of 2025.

‘Modern Parliament Leads Globally'

TDT | Manama Bahrain's modern parliamentary system is emerging as a regional model by integrating digital innovation, gender equality, and diplomatic outreach into its legislative identity. On the occasion of the International Day of Parliamentarism, MP Dr. Maryam Al-Dhaen reaffirmed that Bahrain's experience now stands at the forefront of national reform and international recognition. Diplomacy in focus Dr. Al-Dhaen described Bahrain's parliament as a key pillar in the Kingdom's state-building and development strategy, empowered by the continued support of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and guided by the national reform programme. She said the legislative branch now plays a vital role in foreign policy by building bridges with global parliaments, participating in regional dialogues, and promoting Bahrain's image in multilateral forums. She noted that Bahrain's parliamentary diplomacy reflects the maturity of its democratic experience and supports peace, security, and mutual understanding. These are also among the key goals recognised globally on this day celebrating parliamentary cooperation. Institutional progress Al-Dhaen also commended the government, led by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, for fostering an effective environment of collaboration between the legislative and executive branches. This, she said, enables the Council to perform its constitutional role with efficiency and confidence, especially in contributing to policymaking and sustainable development. The statement follows a series of recognitions for Bahrain's parliamentary transformation. These include the Shura Council's first-place ranking in the Arab world and 13th globally in the 2024 Digital Maturity Index issued by the Inter-Parliamentary Union. The Council has also achieved a 42 percent female leadership rate within its General Secretariat, and women now chair several permanent committees. Unified direction Al-Dhaen said Bahrain's parliament is evolving not only as a legislative institution but also as a platform for international engagement and democratic expression. International Parliamentary Day, she added, serves as a reminder of the responsibility parliaments bear in upholding justice, promoting development, and advocating for equality across borders. She pledged to continue representing Bahrain's national interests in global forums.

Kingdom Seeks Asian Investment

TDT | Manama Bahrain stepped up efforts to position itself as a key beneficiary of Asian-led infrastructure investment by engaging with top decision-makers during the 10th Annual Meeting of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), held in Beijing under the theme 'Connecting for Development and Cooperation for Prosperity'. Leading the Kingdom's delegation, Yousef Abdullah Al-Hamoud, Undersecretary for Financial Affairs at the Ministry of Finance and National Economy, held meetings with bank executives and other high-level officials to expand Bahrain's role in the region's infrastructure development map. Strategic engagement On the sidelines of the summit, Al-Hamoud met with Konstantin Lemtovsky, Chief Investment Officer at AIIB, and Junjing Wang, CEO of the Multilateral Cooperation Center for Development Financing. The discussions focused on enhancing joint cooperation and unlocking new opportunities for financing infrastructure, energy, and logistics projects in Bahrain. The summit, inaugurated by Li Keqiang, Premier of the State Council of China, brought together ministers, investors, and international organisations to address development challenges through strategic partnerships and sustainable infrastructure funding. Support for new leadership Al-Hamoud conveyed Bahrain's support for Ms. Zou Jiayi of China, who was elected by the AIIB Board of Governors as the bank's new President. He welcomed her vision for expanding the bank's contribution to development projects across member states and praised the AIIB's growing role in responding to climate and geopolitical changes. He also reaffirmed Bahrain's commitment to cooperating with the AIIB and aligning its national infrastructure strategies with the bank's regional investment goals. Platform for growth The AIIB, established in 2015, now includes 110 member countries. Its operational priorities span sectors such as transportation, energy, communications, agriculture, and urban development. Bahrain became a member in 2018 and continues to pursue opportunities to attract multilateral financing for strategic national projects. As infrastructure financing becomes increasingly competitive across the region, Bahrain's active engagement at this summit signals a renewed drive to tap into Asia-led development flows.
