Charli XCX, Glastonbury Festival, review: Underwhelming set that was more sizzle than sausage
Glasto-goers lucky enough to get into the Other Stage field to see Charli XCX headline (there were crowd issues because so many people wanted to be there) were treated to a banging 75 minutes of Gen Z-friendly techno-pop. Yet for all the noise and hype, this was a set that was more sizzle than sausage. It was a huge 'event', Charli having released Brat, the most talked about album of the year, last summer. Brat was essentially a ravey celebration of messy rebellion. The album was so big that it launched its own season (Brat summer) and colour (bogey green). As the bass throbbed and the beats pulsated, Charli, whose real name is Charlotte Emma Aitchison, gyrated and crawled around on all fours in a black bikini and shades, wiggling her bum at the camera and, at one point, snogging her own arm. There was fire and rain on stage, and strobes galore. Yet it was all a bit one-note. As is the way these days, she sang to a backing track (which seemed to include the singing part) and her voice was heavily autotuned. No one around me cared that she seemed to be miming some of the time. But any suggestions that she should be headlining the Pyramid Stage instead of Olivia Rodrigo on Sunday night were scotched. This didn't feel like a Pyramid headlining show. After The Verve's Bittersweet Symphony warmed up the crowd, a curtain fell to reveal the green Brat logo, and Charli bounded on to 365. 'Party Girl' flashed on the screens. 'Fucking jump!' she screamed. And so we did. She did indeed bring the party, and the word-perfect crowd were certainly up for it. Club Classics and Von Dutch were absolutely belting, and there was a moment of tenderness when she asked who in the audience 'is really in love tonight?' Then she said, 'Me too. I love you, George' in reference to her fiancé George Daniel, the drummer in Friday night's Pyramid headliner The 1975. Bless. It's quite a weekend they're having. I'd love to know where that joint aftershow party is. Her song Apple has acquired its own viral TikTok dance (basically this century's Chicken Dance), and a tradition has emerged for cameras to zone in on celebrities doing the dance at gigs. Tonight it was Gracie Abrams, the singer who performed on the same stage earlier and is daughter of Star Wars director J.J. Abrams. The force definitely awakened. There were no guests (speculation was rife that Billie Eilish might appear on Guess). It was just Charli, alone, on stage all show. You did wonder where she goes from here (except for Block 9), and whether – and how – the Brat zeitgeist can be maintained in summers to come.

Scissor Sisters' Glastonbury set hit with issues as fans beg for 'fix'
Hundreds of thousands of music lovers have descended on Worthy Farm for the long weekend as the UK's biggest festival returns after a two-year absence from the calendar Over 200,000 festivalgoers flocked to Worthy Farm for the ultimate music bash at Glastonbury, marking its last hurrah until 2027 due to a break in 2026. Neil Young, the 1975 and Charli XCX dazzled fans with blockbuster hits. However, the festivities hit a snag when Belfast band Kneecap was prevented from having their gig aired live by the BBC, prompting controversy. A spokesperson for the BBC clarified: "As the broadcast partner, the BBC is bringing audiences extensive music coverage from Glastonbury, with artists booked by the festival organisers." The spokesperson added: "While the BBC doesn't ban artists, our plans ensure that our programming meets our editorial guidelines." They further stated, "We don't always live-stream every act from the main stages and look to make an on-demand version of Kneecap's performance available on our digital platforms, alongside more than 90 other sets.", reports the Manchester Evening News. In an unexpected turn of events, Deftones bowed out of their lauded slot on the Other Stage, paving the way for rapper Skepta to step up in a surprise substitution. While BBC iPlayer offered access to the various stage antics, technical troubles plagued the service just as Scissor Sisters took the spotlight. Concerned fan @Kirsten4Flowers took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to voice frustration: "what has happened to Scissor Sisters? #Glastonbury2025 stream is dead air". @DigiSaturday tweeted in frustration: "iplayer is not working. What happened to the live from the scissor sisters?" while @Lsxx171 shared the sentiment, posting: "Scissor sisters isn't on. please fix". The band concluded their UK and Ireland tour with a bang in Dublin this May, before hitting the festival scene with gigs in Lisbon and Madrid on June 20 and 21. The Scissor Sisters kept the momentum going at Tinderbox in Denmark on June 27, then made a beeline for Glastonbury, where they rocked the Woodsies Stage on June 28. However, fans noted the absence of Ana Matronic, the band's original female lead, who last year announced she would not be joining the Scissor Sisters' reunion tour. Today saw Neil Young and the Chrome Hearts take to the Pyramid Stage but with sparse crowds, following sets from the likes of RAYE, Patchwork - who were revealed to be Pulp, John Fogerty, The Script, Brandi Carlile and Kaiser Chiefs. Elsewhere, Kneecap performed on the West Holts stage. Police have said they are investigating Kneecap and Bob Vylan's performance at Glastonbury and they are monitoring footage from the stage. During Bob Vylan's set, Bobby called out chants "Free Free Palestine" and "Death Death to the IDF," [ Israel Defence Forces] as the large crowd shouted it back. He then said: "From the river to the sea Palestine must be, will be, free." Avon and Somerset Police posted on X: "We are aware of the comments made by acts on the West Holts Stage at Glastonbury Festival this afternoon. Video evidence will be assessed by officers to determine whether any offences may have been committed that would require a criminal investigation."

Pulp threw shade at Charli XCX during their surprise performance at Glastonbury tonight. The Britpop icons were concealed as mystery band Patchwork - later revealing themselves on the famous Pyramid Stage after 30 years. The band took a swipe at Charli XCX - who has headlining the Other Stage on Saturday night - by declaring 2025 a 'Pulp Summer'. Before their performance, a screen flashed with 'Are you ready for.... Pulp Summer.' It seems the band had a direct message for Charli's fanbase - who declared a 'Brat Summer' last year, thanks to her smash-hit album.
