Midrand SPCA hosts successful AGM, welcomes new member
Speaking shortly after the AGM on July 26, chairperson Brenda Lucas said they welcome Yas Mahomed as a new committee member.
The AGM was held at the Midrand SPCA in Glen Austin.
Lucas said it was a successful AGM with continuity, and all members retained their positions.

'There is a new committee member who will be joining the management committee of the SPCA, but other than that, there have been no changes to the management committee. Some executives had to step down because they had served for two years, but they could stand for re-election, and all of them did stand for re-election,' said Lucas.
Steven Johnstone will serve as deputy chairperson, while Jonathan Burrows serves as treasurer and Shirley Winter as secretary.
Lucas believes this will serve as continuity in achieving animal welfare.
Lucas said after serving for two years, members need to step down and stand for re-election should they wish to continue serving in the management committee, according to their constitution.

WhatsApp group builds community spirit in north Durban
INSPIRED by a television show to giving what you don't need to the community around you, Sunningdale resident Kyle van Reenen has started a WhatsApp group he hopes will build community. This year he started the Sunningdale Buy Nothing WhatsApp group as a way for community members to support neighbours by donating items they no longer needed to reuse rather than discarding. The group, which already has more than 100 members, has already helped residents in the area. So successful has the idea been, that Van Reenen has also started a Glen Hills, uMhlanga and Durban North Buy Nothing WhatsApp groups. Also read: Avoca's cultural activist to visit motherland 'I actually got the idea from a show called Chicago Fire, one of the characters was adopting a baby and they found what they needed through a Buy Nothing group, a reuse group. I put the feelers out in the area I live in and people were quite keen on the idea. We've had a number of success stories including our first one where a resident was looking for Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machine. 'He had actually contacted me before I had started the group asking if I knew where he could buy one. It just so happened one of the first things to be listed on the group to give away was this very machine. Since then we've had people give away books, beds, a car seat, a pram, and recently coffee beans. The groups, in Sunningdale and Glen Hills, are open to anyone who lives within the area. The only rule we have is these groups are not for selling. We also monitor the groups to make sure one person isn't taking everything on offer and then selling it on Facebook Marketplace,' he said. Van Reenen said in essence both WhatsApp groups promoted honesty. 'The ethos we hope to instil is to take what you need and give what you don't need. You can even request what you need, and there might be a person on the group who has that very item they are not using anymore. I have been asked why aren't we giving to charity, I feel there is enough people giving to charity, but there isn't enough people looking after our own community. New principal for RA Engar Primary
Jason Govender has been appointed as the new principal of RA Engar Primary School. He has been there since 2003, and was currently in the position of acting departmental head. News of his promotion has been met with heartfelt congratulations all round. Govender brings with him 20 plus years of experience, marked by unwavering dedication, humility, and an unrelenting commitment to excellence. School governing body chairperson, Phiwe Mzindle, said the appointment was well-deserved. 'His service to education and the wider community has been nothing short of inspiring,' he said. Govender is involved in various community, religious and cultural organisations. His leadership in these spheres has earned him respect and admiration far beyond the classroom walls. He is known for his ability to connect meaningfully with both learners and educators. Eskom to implement nine-hour power outage in parts of Gauteng
Due to planned maintenance, Eskom has scheduled a nine-hour power outage in parts of Soweto, Gauteng. The maintenance is scheduled for Thursday, 7 August, from 9:00 to 18:00. Eskom said there will be an electricity supply disruption in Soweto due to maintenance that will be conducted on the distribution network. The planned power outage is set to affect customers in Doornkop Blocks 5 and 7, Molapo, Moroka, and Rockville on Thursday, 7 August from 9:00 to 18:00 as mentioned above. The interruption of electricity is necessary to perform essential maintenance on our distribution power lines,' the power utility said. 'Eskom in Gauteng conducts planned maintenance on the distribution electricity network across the province as part of its maintenance plan. Maintenance needs to be conducted to service the infrastructure to ensure the safety, reliability, and efficiency of the electricity supply.' For safety reasons, Eskom advises customers to assume that all electrical appliances remain live throughout the power outage. 'We appreciate your cooperation and apologise for any inconvenience this maintenance may cause,' Eskom said. The power provider also noted that unforeseen circumstances could prevent the scheduled maintenance in Soweto from going ahead as planned.
