AFL great Nicky Winmar has appeared in court after he was charged over the alleged assault of a woman.
Neil Elvis 'Nicky' Winmar, 59, beamed into the Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Tuesday charged with two counts of assault and one count of choking, strangling or suffocating a person without lawful excuse.
According to charge sheets released by the court, police allege the incident occurred on July 18.
The two-time All Australian footballer appeared wearing a blue jumper and glasses and spoke only to confirm he could see and hear the court.
His lawyer, Tessa Theocharous, told the court Mr Winmar was on bail for the allegations, with the matter listed for a bail review. Mr Winmar has not been required to enter pleas. Jake Nowakowski Credit: News Corp Australia
Ms Theocharous said the Court Integrated Services Program had provided an 'update letter' to the court and requested the case be adjourned to allow her client to 'fully engage in case management'.
'He has only fairly recently been placed on the (bail) program,' she said.
'There is a further appointment today at court, Your Honour, so that a more fulsome plan can be prepared and Mr Winmar can engage with that.'
An application to revoke Mr Winmar's bail was withdrawn by Victoria Police and his bail was extended until his next court date on August 28.
The AFL Hall of Fame inductee had a twelve-season career with St Kilda between 1987 and 1998, twice winning the club's best and fairest award.
The Indigenous footballer's iconic stand against racist abuse during the 1993 season was immortalised in bronze outside Optus Stadium in Perth six years ago.
The Western Australian lifted his jumper and pointed at his torso, declaring 'I'm black and I'm proud' after receiving abuse from Collingwood fans at Victoria Park.

NDNA 2025: Indigenous round sees A1 upset, and two tough battles for junior division's top sides

Last weekend was a busy celebration for the Narrogin & Districts Netball Association as it recognised the contribution and talent of First Nations players and volunteers in the annual Indigenous Round. The Shire of Narrogin supported the NDNA through their Community Chest Grant, and they presented an afternoon of sensational netball that showcased two exciting games, Indigenous club stars presentations, and art and culture from local Noongar community members. The junior division 1 fixture was a top-of-the-table clash between Cuballing 2 and Olympics Teal, which from the first whistle was a fast-paced encounter synonymous with how the top players, with sharp shooters Horriekeesha Williams and Isabella Corasaniti giving value to their respective teams' mid-court efforts by keeping the score line tight. Bailey Pike was a workhorse for the Olympics at goal defence, and Tenisha Harper continued to have an impact for the girls in navy. Still, the defensive pressure from Cuballing 2, led by the talented Chelsea Ugle who continued giving her attacking players plenty of opportunity, grew, and Cuballing led 21-11 during the long break. Lakkari Kickett returned to the attack for Cuballing in the second half, bringing a steady consistency. Again, exceptional defence by Ugle and supported beautifully by Mia Riley allowed Cuballing 2 to break the game open and pull away with a strong win 46–28. Most Valuable Player and game ball were awarded to Ugle, and MVP for Olympics Teal was their hardworking goal defence Pike. Game two was a tantalising match-up between Cuballing 1 and Flames Firecrackers, which treated the crowd again to a battle between the top teams in the A2 division. Flames' goal attack Claudia Rourke was up and about early, scoring at her typical efficiency, and she was seeing plenty of action due to the exciting defence provided by Nikita Osgood. Marjorie Ugle was impressive in goal shooter for the Cuballing team, with not one missed shot by her in that first period, meaning Flames were up by the slimmest of margins at the first break. A move by Flames to put their tall timber Liana Handcock down into goal shooter proved to be a fruitful one as her height caused some headaches for the Cuballing defence and they pulled away for a 32-35 lead at the long break. In a move to match the height of Handcock, Marjorie Ugle was swung from goal shooter down to goal keeper with immediate effect. She was joined down there by her younger sister Chelsea, and the Ugle girls started showing dominance. Chante Kickett was a steady presence in front of goals fed beautifully by Lakkari Kickett as Cuballing stepped on the gas in the third, piling on 13 goals to Flames' five to lead going into the last quarter. Despite a late charge by Flames led by Rourke, Cuballing 1 came away with the win 54-41. Most valuable player and game ball was awarded to Marjorie Ugle and MVP for Flames was Nakita Osgood. In other games, there was an upset out at Wickepin in the A1 competition as a fierce Wickepin 1 team led by young shooter Abbey Steere, who had an exceptional day under the ring, beat Williams 1 by four goals in a sensational game.

Horror find ends weeks-long search for head

Police believe they have found the head of alleged murder victim Julian Story. The grisly discovery comes weeks after his girlfriend and former Beauty and the Geek contestant, Tamika Chesser, allegedly murdered him and removed his head at the pair's unit in Port Lincoln, South Australia. South Australian Police and SES volunteers spent more than a week fanning out across the scrubland and waters around Port Lincoln searching for Mr Story's head in the aftermath of the brutal alleged killing in June. The search was paused on July 1 but resumed earlier this month, with police identifying several additional search sites in and around Port Lincoln. Detective Superintendent Darren Fielke made the announcement about the grim discovery at a press conference on Thursday. 'Earlier today, police received info from a member of the public in Port Lincoln they have located in a scrub what appeared to be a human skull,' he said. 'Preliminary investigations and phone calls to forensic science scentre (indicate) the remains are most likely human, and I believe they are the remains of Julian Story. 'To confirm this, those remains will be subject to further testing over the coming days. 'Those remains currently remain in Port Lincoln.' Police allege Julian Story was murdered on June 17. Credit: Tim Joy / News Corp Australia Police allege Ms Chesser murdered Mr Story at about midnight on June 17. Mr Story's body was found on the afternoon of June 19 following a small fire at the unit and Ms Chesser was arrested in the yard of the home. Mr Story was a Port Lincoln local, while Ms Chesser had only recently moved to the area from Queensland. At an earlier press conference, Detective Fielke said there was no evidence to suggest cannibalism had played a part in the alleged killing, or that there were religious or ritualistic motivations involved. The cause of death is still being investigated, he added, and a motive remains unknown. 'We know they were in a relationship together, and I'm not suggesting that is a motive, but it is something that is being explored,' Detective Superintendent Darren Fielke said in an update from June. Police allege Ms Chesser was captured on CCTV walking with a bag, dogs, and dressed in heavy clothing in the hours after Mr Story's death. Ms Chesser has been charged with murder, destroying human remains, and assaulting a police officer. Ms Chesser is currently on remand at a psychiatric facility. Supplied Credit: Supplied The assault matter will be heard at Port Lincoln Magistrates Court on July 31, while the murder case is booked to appear in court in December. Ms Chesser is currently being held at psychiatric facility James Nash House. She starred in the second series of the hit reality TV show Beauty and the Geek in 2010, finishing in second place. She has also worked as a model for a range of brands including Target and appeared in men's magazines including Ralph and FHM, a profile for her on Star Now states. Her Instagram and Facebook social media profiles are filled with racy and glamorous images. She has also posted a series of images that appear to reflect Jewish and Hindu mythology. More to come .
