17 dead in head-on collision between minibus taxi and truck in Zimbabwe, police say
Police spokesman Paul Nyathi said all 17 victims, including some pedestrians, died at the scene of the crash, which happened near Chitungwiza, a densely populated town about 25 kilometers (15.5 miles) southeast of the capital, Harare.
Nyathi said the truck veered into the opposite lane and collided with the minibus after the driver lost control. Before the impact, the truck struck two pedestrians walking on the 'island of the road,' he said.
Fifteen of the 17 passengers in the minibus died instantly, while others were injured and rushed to a hospital.
The state-run Herald newspaper reported that the minibus was 'completely flattened, with only fragments of its chassis visible from beneath the truck's undercarriage.'
Twisted metal, shattered glass and debris were strewn across the road as rescuers worked to retrieve trapped passengers, the newspaper said. The accident happened in the morning, but rescuers were still recovering bodies at noon, it reported.
Chitungwiza Mayor Rosaria Mangoma urged the government to declare the crash a national disaster, calling it 'one of the most disturbing and traumatic scenes' the town had witnessed.
Deadly road accidents involving public transportation are common in Zimbabwe, where speeding is widespread as drivers attempt to maximize daily trips. Poorly maintained roads add to the danger.
In February, 24 people were killed in a head-on collision between a bus and a truck near Beitbridge, on the border with South Africa.
Zimbabwe, with a population of about 15 million, records a road accident every 15 minutes, killing at least five people daily — one of the highest fatality rates in Africa, according to the national statistics agency.

Miami's sailing community is 'shattered by grief' after a third child died Sunday, six days after a sailboat and barge collision in Biscayne Bay, the Miami Yacht Club said. The collision happened between Monument and Hibiscus Islands around 11 a.m. July 28. Five girls between the ages of 7 and 13, as well as a 19-year-old woman, went into the water, according to a Coast Guard news release. The sailing vessel went under the barge after the collision, Petty Officer Nicholas Strasburg told CNN. There are no words that can ease this pain, but we stand in full solidarity with the families, counselors, and every member of the YSF during this unthinkable nightmare,' the statement continued. The Chilean National Maritime Authority (DIRECTEMAR) had also been invited to join the investigation, the Coast Guard said. In a statement July 31, the Coast Guard said both people on the tug and barge as well as the sailboat operator had tested negative for drugs and alcohol. The yacht club said the children were in their last week of a sailing camp for children aged 7-15, The Associated Press previously reported. Deadly crash on I-15 near Carmel Mountain Ranch prompts lane closure
SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — A major crash thwarted traffic on southbound Interstate 15 near Carmel Mountain Ranch on Sunday morning, prompting a temporary lane closure and leaving at least one person dead, authorities said. According to California Highway Patrol, the collision occurred just before 9 a.m. near Camino del Norte and involved four vehicles. Initial reports indicated that three vehicles were involved in a crash in the carpool lane when a fourth vehicle collided with one of the already-disabled cars. Whale dies after collision with small boat off New Jersey shore
FacebookTweetLink A minke whale died off the New Jersey shore after a collision that nearly tipped over a small boat and threw a person overboard. Social media video of the collision in Barnegat Bay on Saturday afternoon shows the motor boat rocking after the impact and the 20-foot (6-meter) whale splashing near the craft before swimming away. The person thrown overboard manages to tread water next to the boat. The whale was found dead after it came to rest on a sandbar in shallow water. Marine authorities were not able to get close to the whale due to tidal conditions, according to the Marine Mammal Stranding Center, a not-for-profit rescue, rehabilitation and release organization. 'At this point, we really don't have much to go on,' Jay Pagel, stranding coordinator at the center, said Sunday. 'The side of the animal that we were able to observe had no obvious marks on it that we could see. But again, our visibility was very limited.' Pagel said there were reports the whale had injuries prior to the collision captured on video. He noted there was a second video posted online that appears to show the whale making contact with a pontoon boat after the initial collision. The animal will be towed to a state park Monday morning for a necropsy to determine the cause of death.
