Hughes on plans for Carlisle United's newest pros

Mark Hughes has suggested that Carlisle United's newest professionals are likely to remain with the first-team group throughout the season. The head coach says he ultimately wants to work with a smaller squad than before. That could see continued roles for teenagers Sam Hetherington, Jake Allan and Dan Hopper with the first-team ranks. The academy products all signed their first pro deals this summer and have been involved in United's pre-season games so far. The trio all enjoyed loan moves last season and while Hughes has not ruled out something similar, he said the current plan was to keep them around the senior squad. 'Predominantly they'll be with the first team group,' head coach Hughes said. 'We'll see the numbers. Former Carlisle United captain hails 'proper signing' Grant 'If we feel that they're a little bit too far away from the playing squad or not likely to get immediate chances then we may look at an option just to give them game time. Mark Hughes (Image: Ben Holmes) 'Given that we're running with a smaller group – the intention is to go with a smaller group – then I would anticipate they're more likely to be in and around the group for the full season.' Hetherington has had loan experience with both Workington and Darlington, with the attacking midfielder having also impressed Hughes on the training ground last season. The 19-year-old has been tipped to have a good future in the game by the head coach, who said in May: 'It's [going to be] a big year for him. He's going to have a career in the game and people will enjoy watching him play once he does.' Versatile midfielder Allan, 19, has also been out on loan to Workington, while Hopper spent time with Penrith last season. Hetherington has featured in both United's friendlies so far, at Motherwell and Newcastle United, with 18-year-old Hopper playing in the former and Allan the latter. Other teenagers to feature in pre-season so far include third-year scholar Freddie O'Donaghue and youth team players Hayden Atkinson and Jonah Lowes. Bremen extend contract of key midfielder

Belgian midfielder Senne Lynen signs a new contract with Bremen after two successive seasons with the club. The 26-year-old joined the Bundesliga side from Union Saint-Gilloise for a reported €2.5 million fee in 2023. While the Belgian club has won both the cup and the league since his departure, Lynen has been a key player in Bremen's midfield. Before the defensive midfielder, Bremen gave youngsters Patrice Covic and Karim Coulibaly new contracts. "Senne strongly identifies with Werder and the path we have taken here. He has clearly committed to this,' said the head of professional football, Peter Niemeyer. The player also left a very good impression on the new coach. "In the first few days, I've seen that Senne is an intelligent and confident footballer who can provide important impetus to our game from the defensive midfield,' said Horst Steffen. 'Therefore, I'm looking forward to continuing to work with him." "I feel very comfortable in Bremen – both in the city with my family and at the club," said the player after signing a new deal. "We have made very good progress with the team over the past two years, and I am very keen to take further steps with the club. That's why I have decided to extend my contract early."
