Defending women's 200 metres freestyle champion Siobhán Haughey said she has withdrawn from the world championships in Singapore due to a back injury.
Ms Haughey, a four-time Olympic medallist, became Hong Kong's first swimming world champion with her 200 win at Doha in 2024.
"I have pulled out of the world championships in Singapore due to an ongoing back injury," the 27-year-old said on social media.
"I'm sad to miss out on the opportunity to compete against the best in the world, but right now I have to do what's best for me.
"As elite athletes, we're trained to push through the pain and fatigue to keep going. Yet at certain moments, the brave and hard thing to do is to take care of your body and wait patiently."
Ms Haughey is the grandniece of former taoiseach Charlie Haughey.
The swimming events at the world championships take place in Singapore from 27 July to 3 August.

West Ham face having to vacate London Stadium for weeks if major sporting event gets green light

WEST HAM may be forced to vacate the London Stadium for several weeks if the capital gets the green light to stage the 2029 World Athletics Championships. Last Saturday, Prime Minister Keir Starmer gave his backing to a London bid to host the marquee track-and-field event in four years' time – this involves £45million of investment funding. 3 West Ham could have to vacate the London Stadium for several weeks if London stages the 2029 World Athletics Championships Credit: Alamy 3 World Athletics President Seb Coe has said the process of landing the championships will be a 'competitive' one Credit: Sportsfile A decision will be made by World Athletics next year but president Seb Coe insists it will be a 'competitive' tender process with other cities bidding for the 2029 and 2031 editions at the same time. Sharlene Mawdsley sprints through Tipp's celebrations

Sharlene Mawdsley was the embodiment of 'no days off' during Tipperary's All-Ireland celebrations on Monday, as she raced a local barefoot and in a dress. The Olympic sprinter was in the stands to cheer on her boyfriend and Tipp hurler Michael Breen as the Premier County overturned a six-point deficit to hammer Cork and bring Liam McCarthy back to Tipperary for the first time since 2019. With Michael and the rest of the lads returning to Tipp to celebrate in front of 45,000 people in Semple Stadium, Sharlene joined in on the celebrations, and there clearly wasn't a loss on her this morning; as she raced a fella at 6.45am. Sharlene Mawdsley at quarter to seven this morning 🤣🤣🤣 #tipp #gaa — Ewan MacKenna (@EwanMacKenna) July 22, 2025 A far cry from her racing uniform and runners, Sharlene raced the fan while wearing a dress and flats, and to sweeten the deal, she gave the guy — who's since been identified as former hurler Brian 'Buggy' O'Meara — a head start. The head start was nothing for her, however, as she breezed past him in a 10 second clip that has done the rounds on Twitter (X). 'Imagine walking to work turning the corner and seeing Sharlene Mawdsley racing some lad called Buggy O'Meara!' one person wrote, while another wrote 'Good bit of craic in Sharlene obviously.' Hup Tipp,' another added, while another added that Buggy 'might have taken it on a photo finish.' Sharlene confirmed that she and Michael were an item back in June, following the future All-Ireland champions' win over Waterford in the championship. Outside of the GAA, Michael is a business studies and geography teacher at CBS secondary school in Clonmel, receiving a diploma in education from DCU. The Olympic sprinter proved that she didn't need any runners or uniform to have the race, handily beating the former Tipp hurler in her dress from the night before and without any shoes on. Pic: INPHO/Tocko Mackic He began playing in the minors in 2011-2012, winning a Munster and All-Ireland with the minors before making his senior debut as a substitute in 2015 against Limerick.

Qatar in 'ongoing discussions' with IOC on bid for 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games

Qatar has confirmed its interest in hosting the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The country's Olympic committee confirmed on Tuesday it was in "ongoing discussions" with the International Olympic Committee over staging the Games. The Middle East nation hosted the men's football World Cup in 2022. "This move underscores the State of Qatar's unwavering commitment to supporting the Olympic and Paralympic movements and its keen interest in playing an active role in the advancement of global sport," a QOC statement said. Staging a Summer Games in the searing heat of the Middle East may require a move out of the event's traditional slot. The 2022 World Cup was played in November and December instead of June and July. Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, president of the QOC and chair of the bid committee, said: "We currently have 95% of the required sports infrastructure in place to host the Games, and we have a comprehensive national plan to ensure 100% readiness of all facilities. "This plan is rooted in a long-term vision aimed at building a socially, economically, and environmentally sustainable legacy. "Our objective goes beyond simply organising a successful event, we aim to deliver a global experience that reinforces the values of inclusivity, sustainability, and international collaboration." New IOC president Kirsty Coventry said last month her organisation would be reviewing the process for determining Games hosts.
