Paul Coffey is not returning as Defence coach, returning instead to his previous role upstairs.
'We'll still have conversations with Paul, and Paul will still give us his insight on how the team is playing and what we could be doing'.
Assistant Coach Mark Stuart had his contract extended and his duties expanded to include the Defence corps in addition to the Penalty Kill. Kris Knoblauch spoke to the fact that in between good runs the kill struggled mightily at times this past season:
'There will be changes to our system, (and) we will be doing things a little bit differently'.
Paul McFarland will join Knoblauch behind the bench, help coach the forwards and be responsible for the much-vaunted Oilers Power Play:
'Just the fact that he has been running an NHL power play for many years, started in Toronto, Florida and then Seattle'.
McFarland coached the WHL's Calgary Hitmen last year. He had previous OHL experience in Kingston and Oshawa, where he and Knoblauch coached against one another. They also briefly coached together for Hockey Canada.
And a new Goalie Coach also arrives in the person of Peter Aubry from Omaha and Division I College. Aubry also has eight years of experience in the Chicago organization as a developmental coach. Obviously, G.M. Stan Bowman has a take on his abilities. Here is Knoblauch's:
'He'll be able to push those guys and uh…you know, bring a different perspective and hopefully you know elevate them to get those to play at their best more often'.
Finally, Connor Allen is the new Team Skills coach.
Some big picture thoughts:
-It is highly appropriate for Kris Knoblauch to put his own stamp on his coaching staff. He had inherited practically everyone. But having coached the club to back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals appearances, he has earned the right.
-Having one less coach on the bench is significant. One less set of eyes, yes, but also one less voice that might complicate communication, between the staff yes but also between staff and players. I think this point may be a hidden benefit. There is an old saying 'nothing kills greatness like consensus'.
-I believe Glen Gulutzan would have been back had he not gotten the Dallas job. A loss for the organization, but you have to be happy for Gulutzan. His are easily the biggest shoes (or skates, I guess) to fill. McFarland's advantage is that the same elite players are available to deploy. His enthusiasm should be a plus. His record while guiding Seattle's Man Advantage was not great, in the mid-twenties in terms of Expected Goals. To be fair, it was also with talent much inferior to Edmonton's.
-The 'loudest' position being filled today is undoubtably with the goaltending. I saw no meaningful improvements available in free agency. Getting the promise you already possess in Stuart Skinner to be more consistent is now job one. The organization has decided against 'tried and true' NHL experience. Aubry has worked with the likes of Anton Forsberg, Kevin Lankinen and Arvid Soderbloom. So, let's see how it goes for him here.
-Paul Coffey's contribution in terms of experience and the freeing effect he had on the D-corps to make plays and move the puck more consistently were big pluses. But I also feel a different voice and approach is the correct next step. The mere lack of Coffey's physical presence on the bench and in the room is meaningful.
-But I do not mind how 'fresh' these selections are. These are not 'been there, done that' guys that just keep being recycled from team to team. McFarland is not yet forty. It is Aubry's first mainstream NHL gig (after lots of AHL time). Maybe he can come at this with fresh eyes and ideas. All these guys should be hungry and motivated.
-One reservation I do have is that there will not be a man on the bench in addition to Knoblauch that has NHL Head Coaching experience. Not that Kris needs it, specifically. I just tend to think that all coaches find it helpful.
Will these changes get the Oilers over the top, in terms of their Stanley Cup aspirations? Only time will tell.

Controversial Automated Ball-Strike system is a 'good addition,' but needs development, MLB All-Star says
ATLANTA – Minor league baseball players have had the opportunity to get familiar with the Automated Ball-Strike (ABS) system. Major league players were introduced to it in spring training, but once the regular season began, home plate ruled on whether a pitch fell within the strike zone. The challenge system, which has sparked some controversy in the baseball world, will make its primetime debut at Tuesday's MLB All-Star Game. The reaction in the days since the MLB confirmed the system would be utilized has been mixed. Those who hold baseball's traditions dear have expressed frustration or even outrage. Cleveland Guardians left fielder Steven Kwan, however, took a more measured approach. "I think it's a cool addition," Kwan told Fox News Digital on Monday in Atlanta, the host city for this year's Midsummer Classic. "I think (we) need some more experience with it. We only got to do it in spring training. It's definitely some spring training when you're in the (batters) box with it, but I think overall it's a good addition." During the All-Star game, the National League team and the American League club will each be allowed two challenges. If a challenge is used and upheld, the team will be able to retain it. A batter, pitcher or catcher can challenge a ball-strikes call. However, if a player does want to issue a challenge, time is of the essence. Any challenge has to be presented immediately after a strike or a ball is called. Pittsburgh Pirates ace Paul Skenes was among the high-profile players who chimed in on the ABS system. "Pitchers think everything is a strike," the Pirates ace told reporters in Atlanta on Monday. "Then you go back and look at it, and it's two, three balls off. So we should not be the ones that are challenging it. I really do like the human element of the game. I think this is one of those things that you kind of think umpires are great until they're not." Skenes appeared to take a nonchalant position on the matter, saying he "could kind of care less, either way, to be honest." The ABS system is not expected to be involved in regular season games once the All-Star break ends. The MLB has not revealed any potential timetable for using the system in regular or postseason games, but testing it in the All-Star game appears to be a step toward it eventually becoming a part of the game. Sources: MLS, players reached new Club World Cup bonus agreement
Major League Soccer and the MLS Players Association reached an agreement on restructured bonus compensation for the Club World Cup during the tournament, multiple sources briefed on the deal told The Athletic. MLS agreed to pay the players a minimum 40% increase over the $1 million that was previously spelled out in the collective bargaining agreement. In addition, players received 30% of all Club World Cup performance prize money without any cap on the achievable amount. LAFC also received $250,000 for its play-in victory over Club América, which earned the club a spot in the tournament after Club León was expelled. Advertisement The agreement was reached on June 27, two days before Inter Miami played PSG in the knockout phase of the tournament. 'This agreement provided meaningful enhancements that go well beyond what is required by our CBA and deliver substantial value to the players,' MLS chief communications officer Dan Courtemanche said. 'The league provided the players with the most lucrative bonus package in the tournament.' The current CBA required the league to pay out a maximum of $1 million in bonus money for the Club World Cup, but the unprecedented prize pool and expanded format of the tournament did not exist when the CBA was agreed. Concacaf teams each received $9.55 million for participation, with another $2 million per win and $1 million per draw on offer – plus another $7.5 million if they advanced to the round of 16 (and additional bonuses if they advanced further, which none wound up doing). As such, the league and MLSPA agreed to negotiate a new bonus structure. The talks stretched out to the start of the tournament and beyond, with both sides voicing frustration at the opposition's approach. 'While we were ultimately able to reach an agreement, players were deeply disappointed with the league's approach to the negotiation,' the MLSPA said in a statement provided by a spokesperson. 'Stonewalling, threats and retaliation will not be effective strategies as we move into the major negotiations ahead of us.' The league and union could be engaged soon in CBA talks. The agreement expires Jan. 31, 2028, but the league is weighing major changes to its structure that could determine its growth trajectory coming out of the 2026 World Cup. Some of those changes — including flipping to a fall-spring calendar and some potential roster rule changes — would require MLSPA approval. The negotiations over bonus money spilled into public view when the Seattle Sounders wore T-shirts that said, 'Club World Cash Grab' on the front during warm-ups ahead of an MLS game before the start of the tournament. Seattle owner Adrian Hanauer angrily confronted the players over the protest after the game, according to reports. Advertisement The Sounders lost all three of their Club World Cup games at home, falling 2-1 to Brazilian side Botafogo, 3-1 to Spanish giant Atlético Madrid and closing out with a 2-0 loss to Champions League winner and eventual finalist PSG. Despite failing to get a result, the Sounders players collectively were paid $1.4 million in bonuses. LAFC earned one point in the group stage, falling to Tunisian side Espérance and eventual champion Chelsea, while tying Brazilian side Flamengo. Its players received $1.25 million for participating, plus the $250,000 for qualifying and another $300,000 for their 1-1 draw with Flamengo for a total of $1.8 million in bonuses. Inter Miami was the lone MLS side to win a game in the tournament, courtesy of a Lionel Messi free kick against Portuguese side Porto, and the only team to advance out of the group stage after winning once and drawing twice in group play. Miami players received $1.25 million for participating, another $1.2 million in prize money for their group stage results and $2.25 million for advancing to the knockout stage for a total of $4.7 million in bonuses. MLS also allowed owners to convert up to $750,000 of their Club World Cup payouts into allocation money, which is used on roster budget functions. All three teams elected to max out that option.
