But as ex-winger David Bentley revealed on a recent podcast appearance, with the squad's competitive spirit came a fighting attitude that saw players even come to blows with one another after training sessions. Bentley came through the Arsenal academy before linking up with the senior side in 2001. Although the player spent a number of seasons on loan - first at Norwich City, then at Blackburn Rovers - his entry into the first-team dressing room was a baptism of fire, with the then-teenager thrust into a heated atmosphere at the club's Colney training ground. 'You talk about personalities. No chance,' Bentley told Undr The Cosh podcast. 'You've got Ray Parlour - loves it, lunatic, beautiful man. 'Then you've got Martin Keown, Dennis Bergkamp's an animal - he'd kick the c*** out of everyone. 'Giovanni van Bronckhorst - I used to come up against him and I'd come away with black eyes and bloodied eyes, he used to elbow the life out of me. 'Fights. Pascal Cygan against Kolo Toure was the best fight I've ever seen on the training ground. Two animals going at each other. To try to break them up we needed the whole team. Vieira stamping on me.' But Bentley was quick to admit a moment of his own hot-bloodedness, when going toe-to-toe with France superstar Thierry Henry. The pair were playing against one another in a highly competitive seven-a-side training game organised by Wenger, and Bentley described how, during a heated exchange, he saw red with Henry. 'I squared up to Thierry Henry, ripped off my gloves, (said) "Come on, let's have it." What they did - Wenger, (assistant manager) Pat Rice and the coaching staff - was put on seven-a-sides everyday. 'The dressing room was more concerned about winning the seven-aside tournaments than the game on Saturday. It was hell for leather and it was just slide tackles and fighting. Especially in the last game, that's where I squared up to Thierry, bless him. I would have got a good hiding as well!' Bentley also reminisced about a close encounter with Keown, after he ribbed the star over his age. 'Worst thing I could have done,' Bentley added. #The ball then came in, and I was shielding it, he grabbed me by the neck and threw me from behind. 'My shirt was ripped, and I'm going "Gaffer! Pat!" and they'd say, "get on with it!" Bentley was adamant that the high-intensity atmosphere was critical to Arsenal's unbeaten success - and over 20 years later, current manager Mikel Arteta has appeared keen to create his own unique culture within his title-chasing squad. The current Gunners manager has raised eyebrows with his unusual coaching methods, which have included playing You'll Never Walk Alone in training sessions ahead of facing Liverpool, and hiring sleight-of-hand illusionists to pick his players' pockets at a team dinner to teach them the lesson of alertness.

Aston Villa beat Crystal Palace to sign striker Evann Guessand
Aston Villa have agreed a deal to sign striker Evann Guessand from Nice for an initial €25m (£22m). The 24-year-old is due to travel to Birmingham on Wednesday for a medical and to finalise a five-year contract with Villa who have beaten off competition from other Premier League clubs. Villa faced competition on Tuesday from Crystal Palace and quickly agree the deal for Guessand who with his dynamism and desire to cover distance has been likened in style to Morgan Rogers. Villa do not regard him as a replacement for the England international who has attracted interest from Arsenal and who they want to keep and offer a new contract. Guessand will be Villa's biggest signing of the summer so far. The total transfer fee for Guessand could be closer to €35m (£30m) when all the potential add-ons for the Cote d'Ivoire international are included. Telegraph Sport highlighted in May how in demand Guessand would be this summer having set his heart on a move to the Premier League. Guessand, who has been likened to his hero Didier Drogba, was the second highest-rated forward in French football last season behind Paris Saint-Germain's Ousmane Dembele who has been tipped to win the Ballon D'Or. Villa showed interest in signing Guessand in January before they agreed a loan deal for Marcus Rashford and they have now returned and agreed a deal with Nice who were resigned to losing him this summer once their valuation was met. Speaking after the final game of the Ligue 1 season in May, Nice head coach Franck Haise was pessimistic about the club's chances of retaining Guessand. In July he said there was a '90 per cent' chance the player would leave. Guessand has also drawn interest from a host of other clubs including Palace, Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United but Villa have made their move and he has chosen to join them. Guessand turned down a move to Saudi Arabian club Neom FC as he made it clear he wanted to pursue his career in England. There was also strong interest from Bundesliga clubs. Guessand, who was born in Ajaccio and played for France at youth level before opting to switch to Ivory Coast, is strong and direct and has been likened to Drogba. There is a photograph of the two meeting, four years ago in the Ivorian city of Abidjan, where they had dinner together and they have stayed in touch ever since.

John Stones fires warning to Manchester City's Premier League rivals
John Stones is convinced Manchester City have the 'fire in our bellies' to regain their Premier League title. City surrendered the crown they won in the previous four seasons to Liverpool during an underwhelming 2024-25 campaign. Defender Stones believes lessons have been learned and has detected a strong desire to put things right since the players have reported for pre-season training. The England international said: 'It was humbling for us after all the success that we've had. 'It makes us realise what we've done, what we've achieved over the years and how proud we should be, but we're obviously frustrated at what we did last season. It's not what we want to replicate. 'To finish third, three or four points behind Arsenal is – to our standards – not good, (nor) how we played through the season. 'We've got to put that right and get back to our identity, get back to winning matches and having that presence about us and believing in ourselves as a team. 'I'm sure we'll find that and bring it back because it was tough last season to go through what we did. We've definitely come back with that fire in our bellies to go and achieve.' Stones is now fit after an injury-hit past season but was not risked by manager Pep Guardiola during the Club World Cup in the summer. Despite not featuring, the 31-year-old made emphatically clear when speaking to media during that tournament that he would not be leaving the club. Entering the final year of his contract, there had been speculation about his future but the former Everton player hopes that has now been shut down. He said: 'It's laughable to me. I understand why people do it but there's nothing to comment on. 'I love it here, nothing's happening. I'm here to fight and play and hopefully win some trophies.' Stones was speaking as City held an open training session alongside the club's women's side at the Joie Stadium on the fringe of their training complex on Tuesday. City now have a friendly at Palermo on Saturday before facing Wolves in their opening Premier League game at Molineux on August 16. The side is taking on a different shape with new signings Rayan Cherki, Rayan Ait-Nouri and Tijjani Reijnders having been integrated during the Club World Cup, in which City reached the last 16. Their arrivals continued a squad refresh after the signings of Omar Marmoush, Nico Gonzalez, Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis in January. Stones said: 'Things evolve, football evolves, and the guys that have come in have been great. 'It takes a bit of time, obviously, to get used to the style of play, what's expected, but the guys have come in for a reason. 'With the quality that they've got, the aspects of the game are different from what we've had in the past. I'm excited to play with them and see what they do.'
