Russia shoots down Ukraine's F-16 fighter jet, launches barrage of drones and missiles, amasses troops at..., fear of...
New Delhi: Russia carried out its biggest air attack on Ukraine on Sunday, 29 June 2025 night. Russia fired 477 drones and 60 missiles. It used M/KN-23 ballistic missiles and cruise missiles. However, the Ukrainian Air Force intercepted 475 of these attacks. How was F-16 shot? According to reports, during this attack, a missile shot down Ukraine's F-16 fighter jet. Ukraine said that the fighter jet pilot died in the attack. Residential areas were damaged in the Russian attacks and 12 people were injured. The Ukrainian Air Force said the pilot shot down 7 missiles during the Russian attack, but his plane had a problem while hitting the last target. The pilot took the F-16 away from the populated area, but he could not get out of the plane in time. What Zelenskyy 'demands' from USA? Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has appealed to the USA and Western allies for immediate help after Russia's air strike. Zelenskyy wrote on 'X', 'Russia targeted homes. A residential building in Smila was also attacked, injuring a child.' Zelenskyy has demanded the purchase of Patriot missile systems from the US. Although US President Donald Trump has not yet approved new military aid for Ukraine as he said he would consider the request after meeting Zelensky at the recent NATO summit. Earlier, Ukraine claimed to have attacked Kirovske airbase in Russian-occupied Crimea on the morning of June 28. According to the Kiev Independent, Russia's Mi-8, Mi-26 and Mi-28 attack helicopters, and a Pantsir-S1 air safety system were destroyed in the attack. How much loss for Russia? The Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) said Ukraine targeted Russian aircraft, air defense systems, weapons and drone reserves. However, Russia has not confirmed this. What did Putin say? These attacks took place after Russian President Vladimir Putin's statement on June 27 in which he said that Moscow is ready for a new round of peace talks in Istanbul. However, there are no signs of the war stopping as there has been no success in the talks so far. The recent two rounds of talks between the Russian and Ukrainian delegations in Istanbul have been unsuccessful and there has been no progress in reaching an agreement. Ukrainian army chief Oleksandr Syrskyi said that Russia has deployed more than 1 lakh soldiers to capture the city of Pokrovsk in Donetsk province of eastern Ukraine.

Rape of minority community woman in Bangladesh sparks outrage, main suspect arrested
The alleged rape of a woman belonging to a minority community three days ago in central Bangladesh's Cumilla district sparked nationwide outrage on Sunday after a video of the assault went viral. Police personnel stand guard at barricades across a road as protesters march through the streets of Dhaka. (File photo/AFP) The main suspect of the alleged rape has been arrested along with several others, police said. Cumilla district's police chief Nazir Ahmed Khan said the main accused was arrested in a predawn raid at Dhaka's Sayedabad area and four others were apprehended for revealing the picture and identity of the woman on social media. Students of Dhaka University staged marches in the campus condemning the rape while residents of its Jagannath Hall dormitory, dedicated for minority community students, took out processions calling for justice. Secretary General of former prime minister Khaleda Zia's Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir demanded exemplary punitive action against the culprits. The High Court, meanwhile, issued a directive asking authorities to immediately remove the video of the assault that went viral on social media on Saturday. The two-judge bench also asked the authorities concerned to ensure security of the rape survivor and provide her necessary treatment. Some media reports suggested the police action came only after the video went viral. According to a report, people in the neighbourhood initially released the culprit after a mass beating and took him to a hospital instead of handing him over to police. The suspect allegedly fled from the hospital. The reports suggested the woman was visiting her paternal home at Culimma's Muradnagar sub-district where the accused allegedly broke into the house at night. Ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina's son Sajeeb Ahmed Wazed, who has served as his mother's advisor, took to X to express his outrage at the incident. He blamed the Yunus administration for a rise in incidents of mob attacks, terrorism and rape in the last 11 months. Bangladesh witnessed incidents of violence against members of minority communities following the fall of the Hasina-led Awami League government in August last year. Hasina fled to India when her regime was toppled on August 5 last year, as a fallout of a violent street movement led by a platform called Students against Discrimination. Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, 85, took charge of the interim government three days later.
