Hektar REIT expands into industrial and green energy with RM26mil Terramark deal

PETALING JAYA: Hektar Real Estate Investment Trust (Hektar REIT) is acquiring a 90% stake in Terramark Sdn Bhd from Wan Realty Sdn Bhd and Darul Modal Sdn Bhd for RM26mil to diversify its portfolio into the industrial and renewable energy sectors.
In a filing with Bursa Malaysia, Hektar REIT said Terramark owns a 60-year piece of leasehold agricultural land in Perlis measuring approximately 197.76 acres that is intended for conversion to industrial land use.
'By acquiring a controlling stake in Terramark, which owns a substantial landbank in Chuping, Perlis, Hektar REIT will expand its asset exposure beyond retail properties.
'This move not only strengthens the REIT's presence in high-growth sectors but also strategically positions it to benefit from Malaysia's renewable energy transition through the potential development of a solar farm on the acquired property.'
Hektar REIT said the land is a former sugarcane plantation area undergoing transformation into an industrial and renewable energy hub. It is well connected, being only 8.8 km from Jalan Kangar–Padang Besar and 10.9 km from the Changlun–Kuala Perlis Expressway.
'This acquisition marks a quantum leap in Hektar REIT's diversification strategy. By securing a prime solar-ready landbank, we are sowing the seeds for long-term, inflation-protected income while supporting Malaysia's renewable energy goals.
'Coupled with our rooftop solar rollout and recent industrial investment, this first move on a pure ground-lease model positions Hektar REIT as a multi-asset platform creating sustainable value. Globally, REITs integrating renewable infrastructure into their portfolios have seen increasing institutional investor interest, driven by the shift toward ESG mandates and stable yield profiles,' Hektar Asset Management chief executive officer Zainal Iskandar said in a statement.

3R waste technology to rehabilitate Sandakan landfill

Davina SANDAKAN (July 22): Sandakan is set to make a leap forward in sustainable waste management with the launch of Sabah's first landfill rehabilitation project using globally patented 3R technology. IGNIS SG (Sabah) Sdn Bhd has officially signed a 12-year concession agreement, with an option to extend for another eight years, with the Sandakan Municipal Council (MPS). The agreement allows the company to rehabilitate the long-overdue Sungai Sibuga solid waste landfill, often referred to as a dead landfill. IGNIS SG Executive Director Dr Davina Marcus said the initiative addresses the mounting waste management challenges faced by Sandakan. 'This is something I've planned for a long time. I've seen with my own eyes how landfill sites are growing into mountains of unmanaged waste. The space keeps expanding, and I believe it's time for a new solution, one that tackles the problem and contributes to environmental sustainability without adding to the waste pile,' she said. Speaking during the launch of the Sungai Sibuga Landfill Rehabilitation Project on Tuesday, Davina said IGNIS SG has been given exclusive rights to develop and implement the rehabilitation works using IGNIS 3R technology, patented globally by its parent company, Ignis Environment Initiatives Sdn Bhd. 'This project will not only resolve long-standing waste disposal issues but also drive Sandakan towards green transformation,' she said. According to Davina, the IGNIS 3R system offers a comprehensive, non-incineration and non-toxic treatment process, supporting Malaysia's Net-Zero Emission 2050 target and Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles. 'The technology enables processing of buried waste without prior segregation, using a closed-loop zero waste-to-landfill approach. It also allows for land recovery for future use, and the extraction of reusable materials from old waste.' She further explained that the project is fully funded under a Private Financing Initiative (PFI) by IGNIS SG (Sabah) Sdn Bhd, with support from EXIM Bank Malaysia, without financial backing from the state government or local authorities. 'This shows the financial sector's confidence in the project's viability and the effectiveness of IGNIS 3R technology on a commercial scale,' she added. Currently, the project is in its initial implementation phase, with site works and mobilisation of IGNIS 3R machinery underway. The Sandakan 3R Waste Rehabilitation Project is expected to be physically completed by July 2026. 'My hopes for this landfill project are very high. I want this to inspire others to commit to protecting the environment and freeing up landfill capacity that's becoming increasingly saturated with waste. 'I also hope this project will help reduce public health risks linked to environmental pollution, add value through land reuse, and contribute towards improving Sandakan's image as a city,' Davina said.

MSMEs Gain Better Understanding On ESG Practices, E-invoice Through SME Corp Programme

KUALA TERENGGANU, July 18 (Bernama) -- Operators of Micro, Small and Medium Entreprises (MSME) stand to gain a better understanding of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) practices and e-Invoices through programmes organised by SME Corp Malaysia, an agency under the Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Ministry (KUSKOP). SME Corp Malaysia chief executive officer Rizal Nainy said that programmes such as the two-day 2025 MSME Sustainabilty Series programme, which concluded yesterday, provide exposure and practical guidance to MSMEs on how to implement ESG practices in their business operations. 'Also the use of e-Invoices is in line with ESG practices, which supports the governance element by improving transparency and compliance in a firm's financial reporting. 'This will support Malaysia towards more efficient financial adminstration and the introduction of the e-Invoice is a good step and MSMEs need to take this small step but with confidence to ensure their businesses are susintable in the future,' he said during his welcoming address at the 2025 MSME Sustainable Series programme, held at the Islamic Civilisation Park Convention Centre, Terengganu from July 16 to 17. The two-day programme held for MSME participants in Terengganu and other East Coast regions, contained several main activities, including the 2025 ESG Workshop: From Theory to Practice, the e-Invoice Seminar and the MSME Open Day. He also pointed out that incorporating ESG principles by MSMEs would not only ensure the continuity of existing supply chains, but also creates opportunities to new markets and boosts access to green finance. The second day of the programme was dedicated to the e-Invoice for MSMEs seminar, which provided participants with a deeper understanding on the implementation of e-Invoices, he said. 'Through this session, participants were exposed to the concept and basics of e-Invoicing, in line with the guidelines set by the Inland Revenue Board (LHDN),' he stressed, adding that the interactive seminar provided step-by-step practical guidance on implementing e-Invoices, especially in using the MyInvois portal. -- BERNAMA
