Entangled whale may reach KZN South Coast – public asked to help
Entangled whale may reach KZN South Coast – public asked to help An entangled humpback whale was spotted near Port St John's on Thursday, July 17, trailing a mass of ropes and buoys. According to Wayne Harrison from the KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board, divers managed to remove most of the entanglement. However, the whale is still dragging rope and a deflated buoy, which is wrapped around its pectoral fin. A large pink A5-sized marker buoy is also attached. 'The whale was heading north and may pass the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast soon,' said Harrison. He is appealing to the public, boaters and coastal observers to report any sightings of the whale. 'If seen, please take a GPS position, a clear description of the entanglement, and photographs if possible. This information is vital to assist in any further rescue efforts,' he said. Sightings can be reported directly to Harrison at the KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board on 083 7789838. This is a developing story and updates will follow as new information becomes available. Retiree gives back with heart
When Nelson Mandela famously said, 'What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others,' he may as well have been describing Venetia Reyners. At 57, the Boksburg retiree has found her second calling, not in comfort, but in community service. For the past few months, Venetia has volunteered at the Community of Hope Multipurpose Centre, an NPO uplifting vulnerable residents through food drives, youth empowerment and social support. 'Helping others shouldn't just happen on Mandela Day or during Mandela Month. We have 24 hours in a day; it's what we do with those hours that truly matters. Use them with kindness.' Venetia said her journey began shortly after retirement. Used to a busy life, she found herself restless at home and craving something meaningful. 'I just felt like I was wasting away doing nothing. When I joined the Community of Hope, it felt like I could breathe again. I've never been this happy. I am part of a group of dedicated volunteers who prepare meals, help organise food parcels, support educational initiatives and bring a sense of dignity and care to struggling families in the community. 'What struck me is how much need there is right here in our own communities. You don't have to be rich to help. You just need heart,' she explained. For Venetia, every day represents an opportunity to give back not just in memory of Mandela, but also in the spirit of his values. 'Madiba taught us that it's not about how much you have, but how much you give of yourself. If everyone gave just one hour a day to someone else, imagine the kind of world we'd live in.' The Community of Hope Multipurpose Centre has welcomed her with open arms, and she's now a vital part of their mission. Her message to others is simple but powerful: Don't wait for July. Start today. 'Volunteering gave me purpose and joy. And it reminded me that retirement isn't the end, it's a new beginning.' #Opinion: What to do about abandoned fish hooks
Discarded fishhooks and fishing tackle are a danger to both pets and wildlife, as highlighted in the article: Puppy pierced by abandoned fish hook in Sheffield. We asked our readers to share their own experiences with this hazard on local beaches. Lorraine Fleetwood Yip, Labby swallowed 2 large hooks with bait still on. To be fair, I don't think the fisherman do it on purpose but with all the rocks and the hooks get stuck and unstuck at a later stage and wash up. The don't want to keep buying hooks etc also. Reghard Roets More than once our dogs have picked up discarded hooks with bait on … luckily, we stopped them in time. Some local fishermen are very reckless in this regard, even empty bait packaging and glass bottles are often just left when they leave. Mikaela Hagemann Terrible experience with my Labrador, who had to be rushed to the vet on the Saturday of Easter weekend after eating bait with a hook at Xmas Bay – it got severely stuck in his throat and he had to be sedated to cut it out. My lab was lucky in the end that it didn't go to his stomach but I'm now so nervous to take him to the beach. Allison Pearson I'm so sorry Mikaela. Unfortunately, the people who recklessly discard their bait / hooks etc would never even bother to read this post. And unfortunately, they'll never be held accountable so will just keep doing it. Rein Van De Wall Yip. Ballito vet was a magician! Stay in the loop with The North Coast Courier on Facebook, X, Instagram & YouTube for the latest news.
