
Grandad's fury at £200 fine after using Manchester Airport's drop-off zone
A grandad has slammed Manchester Airport for "no signage" after he was fined £200 for using the drop-off zone without paying.
Peter Walsh, 80, says he has been charged for failing to pay the drop off zone fees on two separate occasions having gone to Terminal 1 in June and July and in both instances a £5 fee was required.
He said he wasn't aware that he had to pay a fee until he received two letters from parking firm APCOA, stating that he had been fined for both visits. "I'm absolutely furious," said the retiree from Middleton. It comes after a Brit abroad slams all-inclusive hotel food asking 'what on earth is this?'
"In June, my son went away for a week and I took him to the airport, no problem. I spent three minutes and a few seconds at Terminal 1, drove out and there was no barrier, no nothing.
"A week later, me and my wife Janet went on holiday to Lanzarote, and my son dropped us off in my car at Terminal 1 and did the exact same thing.
"We were gone for around three weeks. When we came back, what was in my post was two demands for £100 for both visits, which I was absolutely furious at. They had the cheek to offer you a discount if paid within 14 days, I had no chance to do that because I wasn't here. I think it's a disgrace."
Peter says that he is calling on airport and car park bosses to think about reinstating the old system which had a barrier and an onsite payment system. "There was no signage that was flashing in my face. If there were signs there, I didn't see them, " he told the Manchester Evening News.
"Since coming back, I said to my wife that I'm going to jump on the tram, I'm going to have a ride down there and have a look at these signs. But I thought, 'I've got better things to do with my time', so I didn't go.
"They said it's to increase traffic flow, I don't believe it for a minute, this is a money making scam in my eyes. To expect everybody to be 100% okay with the online payment is not fair. Why can't they have a flashing red light or flashing amber light with a small sign saying 'don't forget to pay'. It's a simple thing."
A spokesperson for APCOA said: "Customers using the drop off zone must pay to do so and have 24 hours after their visit to make a payment - Mr Walsh did not make a payment for either visit.
"If a customer feels that they have been issued with a parking charge unfairly, they can appeal within 14 days using the details contained within the letter - Mr Walsh has not appealed either parking charge.
"The new barrierless pick up and drop off areas are reducing congestion around the airport and allow customers to visit these zones without waiting in traffic. To help customers remember to make payment for their visit, there is prominent signage throughout the pick up and drop off zones."
A Manchester Airport spokesperson said: 'Our new barrierless pick-up and drop off areas are reducing congestion around the airport by making sure that people no longer have to wait to exit the areas, which previously could cause traffic to back up.
'The feedback we've had from passengers tells us the new barrierless system has made the airport experience more seamless and they're pleased that they no longer have to wait to leave the pick-up and drop-off areas. That means people aren't ending up having to pay more than they should as a result of waiting at the barriers.
'The vast majority of passengers do remember to pay before the deadline but we want to make sure that people don't forget so we've put prominent signage in place around the areas to make sure nobody misses it.'

Located in the wine-making region of Alsace, both destinations are members of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France - or The Most Beautiful Villages in France. Formed in 1982, Les Plus Beaux Villages de France is an independent body that promotes must-visit rural locations. As of 2024, it numbers 176 member villages. This comes after a warning to Brit tourists planning all-inclusive holidays to Spain. Maryanne Sparkes, French Rivercruise expert at European Waterways, explains their distinct charm. 'Eguisheim's secret lies in its unique layout — concentric circles of narrow lanes surround a central château, each lined with meticulously preserved half-timbered houses. 'This design, dating back to the 13th century, is rare in Europe and creates a magical village atmosphere, amplified by vibrant window boxes bursting with blooms in spring and summer,' she explains. The village also institutes regulations to ensure the preservation of its distinct layout. According to Maryanne: 'Local laws strictly protect the village's architectural heritage, meaning no building facade can be changed without official permission. 'This careful preservation maintains Eguisheim's medieval character, which helped it win the title of 'France's favourite village' in 2013.' Similar to Eguisheim, Riquewihr is 'frozen in time' to preserve its atmosphere and architecture. Maryanne explains: 'A slightly different, but equally beautiful Riquewihr is a medieval fortress frozen in time by local experts. Only five kilometres from Eguisheim, Riquewihr charms visitors with its intact defensive walls, cobbled alleys, and medieval watchtowers.' She says that Riquewihr's houses — some dating as far back as the 16th century — are notable for their traditional painted wooden facades decorated with geometric patterns and floral motifs. Walking through its narrow streets feels like 'entering a living museum' and is particularly magical during Christmas time when fairy lights adorn the walls. Maryanne says that despite Riquewihr and Eguisheim's proximity to the popular destination of Colmar, both towns remain 'delightfully undervisited'. 'They provide the perfect alternative for travellers wanting fairytale charm without the crowds, plus easy access to world-class Alsace wines and local gastronomy,' she says. Colmar has achieved notoriety on social media for its pastel-hued traditional homes and picture-perfect canals. With its relatively small population of 67,000, Colmar maintains a "country town" vibe, drawing visitors into its quaint atmosphere amplified by centuries of dedicated preservation. Disney fans might even mistake Colmar for Belle's hometown from Disney's Beauty and the Beast. The area's distinctive architecture, including timber-clad homes, supposedly served as the direct inspiration for the movie's fictional setting in Alsace.

Friends outraged after Airbnb host cancels booking because of where they're from
Airbnb said they suspended the host and are now investigating the matter after pals Jemma Louise Gough, 38, and Jamie Lee Watkins, 37, were denied a stay in Manchester Two pals who booked a trip to Manchester for a concert were left "gobsmacked" after being denied an Airbnb stay simply because they were "from Wales". Jemma Louise Gough, 38, and Jamie Lee Watkins, 37, had been planning to travel from Cwmbran, South Wales, to see Australian music DJ Sonny Fodera perform at Co-op Live in November. But when they tried to book the one-night stay at a private property in the city, their reservation was abruptly declined. The pair, who wrote on the listing that they were coming 'from Wales to see the gig', were left baffled and politely messaged the host to ask why. The response came back bluntly: "Because you're from WALES." Jemma, a school support officer and mum-of-two, said the message left her stunned. "My mouth hit the floor – nothing else other than 'because you're from Wales'. It was nothing about us going to the concert or whatever, it was just discrimination of the country. We're amazing people, the Welsh are lush. I don't know what me and my friend - or the whole of Wales - did that's so horrible. It's absolutely horrendous." It comes after another Brit abroad slammed an all-inclusive hotel food, asking 'what on earth is this?' Jamie asked the host for further explanation as to why they'd had their booking rejected, saying it was 'discrimination under the Equality Act 2010'. She said her message was read, but received no response. Registered nurse Jamie, who attempted to make the booking through her account, said: "I just thought, 'oh my gosh, how can you say no just because I'm from Wales?'. Se added: "It was really blunt, just one line: because you are from, in capitals, Wales. What difference does that make? I was just a bit shocked really that people still say things like that. If [they] had said 'I don't want people going to concerts and coming back if they'd had a drink or something, I'd be like yeah, okay, that's fine. That's an explanation." An Airbnb spokesperson said: "Discrimination, including on the basis of nationality, has no place on Airbnb. As soon as this report was brought to our attention, we reached out to the guest to provide our support and suspended the host while we investigate this matter."

However, one international airport hasn't welcomed a single passenger for an extraordinarily long period, remaining deserted and shuttered for 51 years. At Nicosia International Airport, the clock stopped ticking in 1974, after a failed Greek-backed coup attempt. Greek military leaders orchestrated the coup, which prompted Turkish forces to launch an invasion in retaliation. It comes after a warning to Brit tourists planning all-inclusive holidays to Spain. Since then, the island has remained divided between Greek Cypriots inhabiting the southern region and Turkish Cypriots occupying the north, reports the Express.
