Thai cabinet approves $1.2 bln bid to host Formula 1 race in 2028
If successful, the Thai capital would win a contract to host a race each year from 2028 to 2032, government spokesperson Jirayu Houngsub told a news conference.
'In the next 2-3 years, Thailand will have world-class competition, which we never thought would actually happen in Thailand,' Jirayu said.
Tourism Minister Sorawong Thienthong told reporters the bid is worth about 40 billion baht ($1.23 billion).
In March, Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra met with Formula One chief Stefano Domenicali and said Thailand would commission a feasibility study into hosting a Grand Prix on a Bangkok street circuit from 2028.
Hosting the race will help promote tourism, a key driver of Thailand's economy, the government has said.

UAE golden visa issue: FTO irked by FBR's ‘inefficiency'
ISLAMABAD: Federal Tax Ombudsman (FTO) has taken notice of the issue of Federal Board of Revenue's (FBR) inefficiency to timely seek data from the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) about the golden visas issued by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to the resident Pakistanis, making huge investments aboard. After the elapse of more than five years of enabling legislation, the FBR was unable to obtain data from the FIA about the golden visa issued by the UAE to the resident Pakistanis on investment of at least 2.0 million dirhams, equivalent to more than Rs 150 million at the present exchange rate and FTO has taken notice of this inefficiency and has called report from the FBR Member Tax Policy and Director General (DG) International taxes. In this regard, the FTO has issued instructions to the FBR to file comments by July 29, 2025 to the FTO office. Crackdown underway: Pakistan's FIA identifies investors with AED 2m real estate holdings in UAE As per tax experts, section 175A was inserted in the Income Tax Ordinance 2001 through Finance Act 2020 and it required that arrangements shall be made to provide real-time access of information and database to the Board by the FIA as per section 175A(1)(a)/(b) regarding international travel and exit of immigration visa holders. Whereas under sub-section (2), the Board shall make arrangements for that. Moreover, under sub-section (3), until real-time access to information and database is made available, such information and data shall be provided periodically in such form and such manner as may be prescribed. However, after the elapse of more than five years, the Board has failed to do both the statutory duties of real-time data access and periodic statements from FIA. This delay and inaction constitute maladministration, and an informed citizen, Tarik Ahmed, has brought the issue to the attention of FTO, and notices have been issued to file comments by July 29, 2025. When contacted for comments, Basharat Qureshi, a Karachi-based tax expert, explained that the issue has two dimensions: the first is ownership of foreign immovable property and its declaration in the wealth statement and sources thereof. The second issue is whether the foreign exchange was remitted from Pakistan through permissible legal means, and checking of this aspect is the domain of the FIA. Therefore, coordination of FBR and FIA would be required, and thousands of cases can be easily detected where neither the foreign property is declared in the tax declaration, nor the foreign exchange was remitted legally. Basharat was of the opinion that in the tax return, further mandatory attributes can be added, asking for do you hold any foreign passport or resident visa, and basis of the same as naturalization or investment, as thousands of Pakistanis hold a second passport or resident visa on the basis of investment. Asian currencies downbeat against dollar
BENGALURU: Equities in emerging Asia advanced on Thursday, lifted by recent US trade deals with Vietnam and Indonesia and rising expectations that central banks across the region will adopt a more dovish monetary policy stance. Singapore's FTSE Straits Times Index notched a record high for the ninth straight session, marking its longest winning streak since early 2014, underscoring investor confidence in the city-state's resilience amid global trade headwinds and its favourable tariff positioning relative to peers. 'Singapore's reciprocal tariffs are not just lower than Malaysia (25%) and Vietnam (20%), but also comparable developed economies which produce high-end exports, including the EU (30%) and Japan (25%),' said Maybank analysts. Singapore ran a trade deficit with the US last year. Following stronger-than-expected growth data, Maybank analysts expect the Monetary Authority of Singapore to maintain its appreciation bias at both the July and October meetings. Both Vietnam and Indonesia have clinched trade deals with the United States before the August 1 deadline. This has raised hopes that there could be more deals coming through amid ongoing negotiations, said Christopher Wong, a currency strategist at OCBC. 'Also there remain expectations that Fed will return to easing cycle at some point later this year to next year,' Wong said. Meanwhile, recent news from both Thailand and Indonesia has helped markets lift bets on further monetary policy easing. Thailand is reportedly set to nominate Vitai Ratanakorn as its new central bank chief, a veteran banker popular for his dovish tilt. The equity benchmark in Bangkok was the top gainer among its regional peers on Thursday, rising 3.6% to its highest since late May. 'Earlier signs this week pointed to the appointment of Vitai Ratanakorn, who would have been seen as a dovish appointment and an advocate of lower rates as well as coordinated fiscal and monetary policy to revive the economy,' said analysts at Citi. Indonesia lowered interest rates on Wednesday and signalled further room for easing, pushing the equity index in Jakarta 2.2% higher over the last couple of days. Meanwhile, currency markets in Asia were on edge amid speculation over Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's future. While US President Donald Trump sought to calm nerves by stating he was 'highly unlikely' to remove Powell, the uncertainty has added a layer of volatility across global markets. Indonesia's rupiah fell to its weakest in more than three weeks, while the South Korean won hovered around its late-June lows. The Thai baht, Singapore's dollar, the Philippine peso, and the Malaysian ringgit all traded lower.

PTI slams sugar price hike, demands judicial inquiry
LAHORE: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Punjab has strongly condemned what it terms a massive surge in sugar prices, alleging mismanagement, deliberate malpractice in sugar supply, and unchecked empowerment of the sugar mafia. In a strongly worded statement issued on Wednesday, the party demanded that either the official rate of Rs 165 per kg for sugar be strictly enforced or the government should publicly withdraw this promise. It also called for an immediate judicial inquiry into the price hike and duty-free sugar imports. The PTI Punjab further demanded that all sugar import/export permits issued since 2023 be made public, and that strict penalties and legal action be taken against sugar mills violating agreements. The party also urged the reactivation and empowerment of all relevant regulatory institutions, including the FIA, FBR, SECP, and CCP. According to PTI Punjab Media Cell Head Shayan Bashir, 'The sugar mafia, which continues to exploit the public through unjustified profiteering, and their patrons, inept and corrupt rulers, have set the official price of sugar at Rs 165 per kg, yet it is being sold in markets for Rs 180 to Rs 210 per kg.' He added, 'There is no visible check and balance on sugar supply and pricing in the province, which was a clear reflection of the worst kind of mismanagement. The largest province of Pakistan cannot be run through glamorous advertisements and TikTok theatrics. Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz may be a good actress in front of the camera, but governance is not run through selfies or reels. Governing a province was not a scripted show; it is the real world, and unfortunately, she has completely failed in it.' Bashir said the ongoing sugar crisis was a glaring example of governmental incompetence and elite favouritism. He alleged that the sugar mill mafia was rewarded through artificial shortages, followed by duty-free sugar imports that benefited select importers while the public suffered due to inflation. 'The powerful few made billions, with full state support,' he said. He further claimed, 'The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has labelled this duty-free import policy a clear violation of Pakistan's economic reform commitments. It not only undermines fiscal discipline but also adds a new burden on an already devastated economy. During the PTI government, an inquiry commission was constituted to investigate the sugar crisis, and all those involved were held accountable; even close allies like Jahangir Tareen were not given any concessions.' Bashir maintained that under the current regime, the public has been crushed under the weight of inflation while the rulers remain apathetic and the media is silent. 'The truth was being buried under a flood of advertisements, and there was no one to hear the public's cry. Even the pain of inflation has now fallen victim to vested interests. The PTI Punjab will strongly protest against this anti-people government and raise public issues on every platform,' he concluded. Copyright Business Recorder, 2025
