NBFC asset quality deteriorates to 5.9% in March 2025, says RBI FSR
Slippage ratios among upper layer NBFCs have been rising, along with an upward trend in loan write-offs. Notably, write-offs for upper layer NBFCs surged to 72.9 per cent in March 2025 from about 50 per cent in June 2022. For middle layer NBFCs, write-offs increased to 38.7 per cent from approximately 20 per cent during the same period. As a result, combined write-offs for both layers rose to 46.4 per cent in March 2025, up from nearly 20 per cent in June 2022.
'Some NBFCs have shown aggressive credit expansion despite elevated write-offs, raising concerns about credit discipline,' the report said.
The FSR noted a marginal deterioration in the Non-Banking Stability Indicator since December 2024, driven by increased risks associated with the cost of funds and borrowing. Nonetheless, the RBI maintained that the NBFC sector remains resilient and well-positioned to support economic growth, backed by relatively healthy balance sheets.
'There has been a marginal deterioration in the non-banking stability indicator since the December 2024 FSR, as two of the five dimensions — cost of funds and cost of borrowings — showed an increase in risk. Overall, the NBFC sector remains resilient, and the sector is well positioned to support economic growth aided by healthy balance sheets,' the report said.
The report further highlighted that NBFCs — including housing finance companies (HFCs) and fintech firms — account for 84.3 per cent of personal loans below ₹50,000, according to the latest FSR. The report noted rising credit risk in this segment, stating that around 10 per cent of borrowers availing personal loans under ₹50,000 already had overdue loans.
Additionally, 'over two-thirds of borrowers who took personal loans in the last quarter had more than three active loans at the time of origination, indicating growing debt stress among small-ticket borrowers,' the report said.
While bank lending to NBFCs has declined, bank finance remains the dominant funding source for the sector. However, reduced access to bank borrowing has pushed up the overall cost of funds and foreign currency borrowings.
Credit growth for upper and middle layer NBFCs rose to 20.7 per cent year-on-year in March 2025, up from 16 per cent in September 2024, though still below the pace recorded in September 2023. The acceleration in credit growth was mainly driven by upper layer NBFCs, partly due to the reclassification of a housing finance company as an NBFC-UL and the merger of a middle layer NBFC with an upper layer entity.

Personal, small biz loans prop bank credit growth
MUMBAI: Credit to small businesses and advances in the personal loans segment have helped keep the year-to-date growth in bank credit in positive territory. According to data on sectoral deployment of bank credit as of May 2025 released by Reserve Bank of India , overall bank credit grew 0.2% from end March 2025 levels. The growth over 12 months (year-on-year) was 9%. The sluggish growth in credit was because of credit to large industries shrinking by 3.8% Rs 26.8 lakh crore - a drop of Rs 1.06 lakh crore from end March levels. Year on year credit to large industry was up 1% compared to 7.1% growth a year ago. Similarly, credit to the services segment fell by 1.4% to Rs 50.9 lakh crore - a drop of Rs 75,800 from end-March 2025. This was largely because of a 4.5% drop in bank credit to non-banking finance companies. The NBFC loan book of banks shrunk by Rs 73,453 crore to Rs 15.62 lakh crore as of end May 2025. There is clear evidence of small businesses supporting credit growth in the data. Micro small and medium enterprises added Rs 50,797 crore to bank loans in the first two months of the current financial year. In the personal loan segment, loans against shares, credit card outstandings, education loans, vehicle loans, loans against jewelery and other personal loans added Rs 81,766 crore to bank credit during the first two months of the fiscal. RBI bans fine for pre-paying some biz loans
MUMBAI: RBI has barred pre-payment penalties on floating rate personal and small business loans, aiming to simplify lending and enabling switching lenders. The ban on prepayment charges applies on floating-rate personal loans, or on business loans given to individuals and micro or small enterprises regardless of how the loan is repaid or the source of repayment. For smaller lenders like small finance banks and rural banks, this waiver applies to loans up to Rs 50 lakh. Effective Jan 1, 2026, the RBI (pre-payment charges on loans) Directions, 2025 apply to all loans sanctioned or renewed thereafter by commercial banks, co-operative banks, NBFCs, and all-India financial institutions. There is no lock-in period, and even loans that began as fixed-rate but shifted to floating qualify if prepaid during the floating phase. Where charges are allowed (e.g., on fixed-rate loans), they must be disclosed in advance, proportional to the prepaid amount, and never imposed retrospectively. Amazon is shutting down the app of free streaming service Freevee
Amazon will shut down its standalone Freevee app in August 2025, redirecting users to access its free, ad-supported content on Prime Video, according to an in-app notice. The move consolidates Amazon's streaming services, integrating Freevee's library of movies, TV shows, and live TV into the Prime Video platform. 'Prime Video is the new exclusive home for Freevee TV shows, movies, and Live TV,' the notice reads. 'The Freevee app will be accessible until August 2025. Continue watching your favorite Free Originals and our library of hit movies, shows, and live TV on Prime Video for free, no subscription needed.' Amazon first announced plans to phase out Freevee's branding in November 2024, emphasizing that the transition would not affect content availability. Prime members will continue to access the same offerings, while non-Prime members can still enjoy free content, including Amazon MGM Studios Originals, licensed movies, series, and FAST Channels, all on Prime Video. The decision reflects Amazon's strategy to streamline its streaming services by centralizing content on a single platform. Freevee, launched in 2019 as IMDb TV and rebranded in 2022, operates in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, and Austria. Popular Freevee originals, such as the Emmy-nominated 'Jury Duty,' 'Bosch: Legacy,' and 'Neighbours,' are now available in Prime Video's 'Watch for Free' section. Users are encouraged to download the Prime Video app and sign in with their Amazon account to continue accessing Freevee's content seamlessly. AI Masterclass for Students.
