India women's hockey team suffers 2-3 defeat against China, gets relegated from FIH Hockey Pro League
Berlin [Germany], June 29 (ANI): The Indian women's hockey team ended their FIH Hockey Pro League 2024-25 campaign with a 2-3 loss against China here in Berlin on Sunday.
Though it was an inspired performance by India, it was simply not enough to get the better of China. It was goals by Ying Zhang (19', 30') and Xu Wenyu (53') that helped China win, while Sunelita Toppo (9') and Rujuta Dadaso Pisal (38') scored for India.
This was the last match of the season, with the Netherlands finishing on top, Argentina finishing second, and Belgium finishing third in the league, while China finished fourth in the points table. India finished last and will be relegated from the FIH Pro League. They will need to play the FIH Nations Cup to earn their place again in the prestigious tournament.
Though it was China who got on to a good start with an early penalty corner (PC), India made headway in the 9th minute when a pass from Neha Goyal to Sunelita Toppo led to a fine goal. The youngster from Odisha picked up the pass well, ran up wide to create space and got a clear shot on goal. Two minutes later, China threatened to equalise when they won a PC but India defended well.
It didn't take too long for China to find an equaliser. In the 18th minute, China won a PC - though there was no goal from this attempt, Deng Qiuchan was hit on the face by Indian defender Manisha Chauhan while she was trying to clear the ball. Quichan had to be taken off the field, and the on-field umpire handed China a penalty stroke, which India appealed.
The video umpire did uphold India's review and awarded a PC to China, which they promptly converted through Ying Zhang. Building momentum in their attack, China fetched another PC towards the end of the second quarter. Zhang was spot-on yet again as she added another goal to her name, ensuring China were in the lead.
India had their chance to equalise in the 37th minute when they won their first PC of the game. At the same time, the Chinese defenders blocked the first PC. Though the on-field umpire missed it, India took a successful referral and were awarded another PC. This time, Navneet Kaur took the shot and tried a fantastic variation. The experienced Kaur passed the ball to Rujuta, who was standing on the right flank. She got a perfect deflection to level the score.
India showcased an inspired performance today, put pressure on China, creating potential chances in the circle and even found success. China, meanwhile, began the final quarter with a PC after a back stick foul by India. This one was well-defended by Bichu Devi, India's goalie. Bichu was kept busy in the following minutes as China won two more PCs, but Devi was on par with her saves.
A relentless China ended up finding success in the 53rd minute when Xu Wenyu converted this one through a PC. India giving away soft PCs has been a concern in both matches against China. The 3-2 lead put China in a good position to finish well.
'This Pro League we played attacking hockey. We need to continue to build on it. We have the World Cup qualifier coming up, and our aim will be to do well there,' stated Salima Tete after the match as quoted from Hockey India. (ANI)

AB de Villiers Slams 'Mismanagement' As Gautam Gambhir Restricts Jasprit Bumrah To 3 Tests
On the tour of England, one of the toughest places for the Indian team to win a Test series, the fact that the tourists would have Jasprit Bumrah, arguably the best pacer in the world, available for just three games out of five, is baffling for many. Bumrah, who featured in almost the entire Indian Premier League (IPL) season for the Mumbai Indians, has been allotted just three games against England. India's head coach Gautam Gambhir already made the decision clear, making many wonder why lesser-important games couldn't be removed from Bumrah's schedule to manage his workload. Former South Africa captain AB de Villiers, who also had to manage the workload of Dale Steyn during their active days, isn't onboard with the Indian team management's decision over the call to give Bumrah just three matches on the 5-Test tour. "He is probably the top bowler in the world in all formats right now. So, it's very difficult to decide a way to rest him," De Villiers said on his YouTube channel. "But in my opinion, Test cricket is the ultimate form of the game. And this Test series probably would've been the one, in my opinion, to get him ready for all five Test matches." Citing Steyn's example, De Villiers said that Bumrah should've ideally been rested in lesser-important T20Is and ODIs. "That's what we used to do with Dale (Steyn). Rest him in lesser important T20 and ODI series and get him ready for the big Test series against Australia, England, and India away from home... New Zealand to a certain extent, depending on the rankings at that time," he explained. The former Proteas captain even threw the word 'mismanagement' by the Indian team as he questioned what led to the team taking such a call. "So, I don't know if it was mismanagement or perhaps because he recently got back from injury, sort of saw the IPL as the warmup phase," he said. "Maybe, went to the surgeon, who let him know, 'You can't play the five Test matches.' So, I mean you got to respect that, and at the end of the day, it's up to Team India to sort of manage him well," he added. "It doesn't get bigger than that, guys, except for maybe the WTC final."

A confident India will aim to capitalise on opener Smriti Mandhana's sublime form and hope for skipper Harmanpreet Kaur's availability to achieve another big win when the second Women's T20I against England is played in Bristol on Tuesday (July 1, 2025). Mandhana's maiden T20I century in the opening game at Nottingham guided India to a massive 97-run win, and the likely presence of skipper Harmanpreet — who was rested for the first game as a precautionary measure following a head injury sustained during a warm-up match — for the second game would only add to the hosts' worries. Mandhana's stroke-filled century would have rung alarm bells in the English camp as it tries to find answers to the dramatic batting collapse it suffered while chasing a steep 210-run total. It was a day when Mandhana's entertaining innings brought the hosts under tremendous pressure, which was later exploited by the Indian bowlers. India struck twice early and the slow bowler, especially left-arm spinner Shree Charani who grabbed four wickets in her maiden T20I, complete the demolition job. Mandhana, who led the T20I run-scoring charts last year, seemed to have picked up from where she had left off, smashing all the English bowlers with impunity. Though the left-handed batter said after the match that the T20I format wasn't her forte, it was a statement the cricket experts would take with a pinch of salt. The long camp in Bengaluru followed by their early arrival in England and a couple of tour matches seem to have helped the Indian players get into the rhythm of the shortest format as they showed no signs of rustiness in Nottingham. India looked like a well-knit unit despite missing their premier seamers, Renuka Singh Thakur and Pooja Vastrakar, who are injured. Harleen Deol at No. 3 looked the right call as she forged a 94-run stand for the second wicket with Mandhana to set up the platform for a big total. While the bilateral white-ball series may not have immediate implications, it will certainly give the young Indian players the look and feel of the things to come when the T20 World Cup is held next year in England. And, the 20-year-old debutant Shree Charani did really well in her maiden outing, delivering a dream spell of 3.5-0-12-4 to set up India's win by displaying a lot of discipline and focus to strangle the England batters.
