Winning Edgbaston Test a very proud moment, can never forget this, says Akash Deep
Akash took 6-99 as England, set a mammoth 608 runs to win, were dismissed for 271 on day five, giving India a famous series-levelling win. His match figures of 10-147 are now his best figures in a Test career worth eight matches.
'It's a very proud moment. I can never forget this moment in my life. The biggest thing is that we won the match in which I took five wickets. So this is a very proud moment for me that I chipped in with my contribution to make my team win. I wouldn't have been as happy with the first five wickets if this match had been a draw. So I'm very happy about that. I got everything I wanted,' said Akash in a video posted on bcci.tv. on Monday.
His fellow pacer and new ball partner Mohammed Siraj, who took 6-70 in the first innings, said the win at Edgbaston is now the third best cricket match he's played for India. 'This is the third best match of my life, because the first match was Gabba, the second was Lord's, and this is the third. I can't describe this feeling. It's great that we made a comeback here.'
'To be honest, it was an important match in the series. As a player, it's great to create history through the way we, Shubman and Akash performed. Whenever Akash was bowling, I used to stand at mid-off. I used to tell him not to think to take wickets all the time - just put it in one place and you'll get the wickets. Like I said in the first innings, if he's lucky, he'll get five. But in second innings, next day, he got five wickets.'
Vice-captain Rishabh Pant, who hit a tempo defining 65 in India's second innings, was relieved that the job which they failed to complete at Edgbaston in 2022 was now fulfilled here. 'I think personally, it's amazing. Last time when we came here, the task was incomplete at Edgbaston. This time, I'm so happy that we were able to achieve it.'
'One thing we always talk about, how we can learn as a team and defy whatever all we have done in the past. But bringing this team together and making it to a different level - that's all we need.'
Veteran all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, who hit fifties in both innings and chipped in with wickets, felt happy for Gill getting his first win as Test captain via making scores of 269 and 161. 'It will be special for Shubman that we won our first match in Edgbaston. For Gill, as a captain and as a batter, I think it was a special match.'
'He played very well in both the innings. All in all, as a team, I would like to congratulate everyone. Everyone put in a good effort and we achieved a great victory on the ground,' he concluded.

I did not remember my sadness at all when he took wickets,' she told ANI. Akash revealed earlier after the match that he had kept his sister's illness private and was playing with one mission in mind, to make her happy. 'The biggest thing is that I have not told anyone yet. My elder sister has been suffering from cancer for the last two months. She is stable now. She is fine. She will be the happiest. She has been going through this mentally for the last two months,' Akash said in a heartfelt conversation with Cheteshwar Pujara. 'I was playing this match for her. I have to make her happy with this match,' he added. Akash's mother, Laddooma Devi, expressed immense pride in her son's performance, calling it the realisation of a long-cherished dream. 'I feel very proud... I am very happy... It was my dream that he should play for the Indian team... Maybe Akash takes 10-10 wickets like this. he should play like this for India in future,' she said. Coming to the match, England once again opted to field first. After getting KL Rahul (2) early, a 80-run stand between Yashasvi Jaiswal (87 in 107 balls, with 13 fours) and Karun Nair (31 in 50 balls, with five fours) helped India gain some footing in the match. India broke their near six-decade-old Birmingham duck in emphatic fashion, their bowlers doing what their English counterparts couldn't with a mesmerising performance on a flat bed of a pitch to level the series 1-1 in front of a passionate Sunday crowd. Ever since their first Test in the West Midlands ground way back in 1967, the Indians had lost seven and drawn once without tasting a victory in eight tries. That dubious record was set up nicely to be rewritten following four days of complete domination, but the task still had to be completed on the fifth and final day of the second Test. Overnight and morning rain threatened to play spoilsport to their ambitions, but when the sun came out around noon and the skies remained clear, Akash Deep shone like a precious diamond to script a memorable 336-run win. The 28-year-old Akash, who came in as a replacement for lead pacer Jasprit Bumrah but made a telling impact in the first innings with a superb 4/88 show, led the demolition job in the second with a brilliant 6/99 while the rest of the attack chipped in beautifully by bowling to a plan without losing shape, shutting out England for 271 in the second session. When the Indians checked into the ground, they were in for a depressing sight as the main square lay covered following persistent rain in the wee hours. Dark clouds were still present while they were warming up before rain lashed the ground as England, who were 72/3 overnight, looked like they may escape with a draw. But with the ball having gotten softer and nothing on the pitch, the Indians needed a moment of magic to snap the Smith-Stokes stay. Washington Sundar, a debatable selection for this game, provided that, trapping Stokes leg-before in the last over before lunch. The Indians came out charging post their meals, but Smith continued to stand like a brick wall, this time with support from Chris Woakes. Time was ticking over, and nervous energy crept in as it suddenly became overcast.

She talked in details about her bond with brother Akash and how the pacer left no stone unturned to take care of her. "I am very happy and proud of my brother's performance against England in the Test match. Before leaving for England, he came to meet me here in Lucknow and even departed for England from here. During the IPL, when he used to play for Lucknow Super Giants, Akash used to come and meet me everyday after the practice," Jyoti told NDTV. Akhand stated that she was diagnosed with cancer two months ago. "He called me after the victory against England yesterday and we talked to each other on the phone today as well. Despite suffering from cancer, I am not facing any problem under the care of my brother, husband and other family members," said Jyoti. "I want Akash to perform better and bring glory to the country. He has said that after returning from England, he will come straight to Lucknow and meet me," she added.
