Lebanon's Finance Minister: Iraqi fuel payment ready for transfer
Lebanese Finance Minister Yassine Jaber announced, on Friday, that funds owed to Iraq for fuel exports are ready for transfer.
In a statement after meeting with Iraq's Chargé d'Affaires in Beirut, Mohammad Redha al-Husseini, Jaber confirmed that the payment is pending action from Iraq's Central Bank to activate the designated financial channel. He noted that the move would simplify transactions and improve access for Iraqi citizens and businesses.
The fuel-for-services agreement, signed in July 2021, allowed Lebanon to import heavy fuel oil from Iraq to power its electricity plants in exchange for Lebanese goods and services. The deal was expanded in late 2023, doubling Lebanon's annual fuel quota to two million tons—though Beirut has yet to fully meet its service obligations.
Jaber also revealed that a delayed Lebanese ministerial visit to Baghdad is being rescheduled to boost economic ties and advance key infrastructure projects, with the agenda including finalizing a double taxation agreement, restarting the stalled Iraq–Tripoli oil pipeline, expanding fiber-optic infrastructure, modernizing payment systems, and facilitating cross-border movement.

Baghdad ( – The Iraqi Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, hailed on Saturday the peace agreement Turkey reached recently with the Kurdistan Worker's Party (PKK). Al-Sudani's remarks took place during a phone conversation with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, in which they discussed ties between the two countries, according to a statement released by the Prime Minister's Office (PMO). The Iraqi prime minister confirmed that the peace agreement will help the region by promoting stability and development for its people. Last May, the PKK announced its intention to disband and to cease military activities, bringing an end to four decades of conflict. The step took place after PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan, who has been imprisoned since 1999, urged the party in February to formally dissolve and start disarmament. After starting the process of handing over its weapons during a ceremony held in the northern Iraqi city of Sulaymaniyah on Friday, the PKK said in a statement that the party handed over its weapons voluntarily in response to the adoption of legislation for democratic integration. Turkey, the United States, and the European Union have all designated the PKK, which has fought for decades, as a terrorist group. The party's decision to disband is an important milestone in regional geopolitics and could ease long-standing tensions, notably in the Kurdistan region of Iraq, where PKK members remain.

Iraq Stock Exchange reports 22Bn IQD traded in June as main index drops 5%
Baghdad ( – The Iraq Stock Exchange (ISX) announced on Saturday (July 12, 2025) its trading summary for June 2025, reporting a total traded value of over 22.7 billion Iraqi dinars. Across 17 trading sessions throughout the month, nearly 9 billion shares (8.937 billion) were traded from 75 different listed companies. The exchange executed a total of 14,526 buy and sell transactions. However, the market saw a notable downturn in its main index. The ISX60 index closed at 965.73 points, marking a significant 5% decrease compared to its close at the end of May. The ISX, which lists 104 Iraqi companies across key sectors like banking and telecommunications, experienced a month of high trading volume but negative overall index performance, indicating a market correction following previous gains.

EU appoints New Head of Mission in Iraq
By John Lee. The Council of the European Union has appointed Ralf Schröder (pictured) as the new head of mission for the European Union Advisory Mission in Iraq (EUAM Iraq). He will take up his duties on 16th August 2025. According to a statement: Ralf Schröder is a high-ranked German police officer with 30 years of experience in the security sector, specialised in counterterrorism. He has also served in different international positions -e.g. in Afghanistan and Iraq, where he was head of the Embassy Security Team - and in international missions: UNMIS and UNSOM. Since November 2024, Ralf Schroeder serves in EUAM Iraq as Deputy Head of Mission. The decision was taken by the Political and Security Committee on 8 July 2025. EUAM Iraq was launched in October 2017 in response to a request by the Iraqi government for advice on how to undertake civilian security sector reform. The civilian mission, headquartered in Baghdad and with an office in Erbil, had an initial mandate of one year which was regularly extended, following the assessment of Iraqi needs. The mission's overarching task is to assist in the development and coherent implementation of the Iraqi National Security Strategy, associated national strategies and other national security priorities. This process, supported by several international partners, involves inter alia support to institutional reform, anti-organised crime, anti-corruption, protection of cultural heritage, Integrated Border Management and counter-terrorism. EUAM Iraq is mandated to advise officials of the Office of the National Security Adviser, the Ministry of Interior and other relevant authorities in charge of civilian related aspects of security sector reform. The mission can conduct visits at regional and provincial levels in support of Iraqi efforts to strengthen countrywide coordination as it relates to civilian security sector reform.
